EDITORIAL Dear friends The autumn equinox is fast approaching, in fact it will have passed by the time you read this. The season of harvest festival services has begun where we thank God for the plentiful harvests of fruit and veg. The clocks go back an hour in October - all signs that winter is coming again! A time when many of us relish a warm cosy fire, maybe a open fire, maybe a wood-burner, or maybe a gas fire - and we can sit around and enjoy the warmth radiating from it, having eaten a good meal. But this is not the case for everyone, there are many people of all ages, who will sit huddled in a chair with all their warmest clothes on and a blanket over the knees and gloves on their hands trying to cherish every vestige of heat that they have, and their stomach rumbling because their meagre meal is barely satisfying. Why? Because many, in our society today, can't afford to eat, and keep their homes warm. The Lord's Larder in Yeovil are having more and more requests for help. If you read their website ycstyeovil.org.uk you will see that this August they had a 57% increase over the same month last year, from families, with children, struggling to feed them during the school holidays. Overall they helped 270 adults and 220 children during the month. On average the demand for their food parcels is up by 16%. Many of these people will be on benefits, the value of which has not been keeping up with the cost of living. Many will be working, but on low-end wages which are also not keeping up with the cost of living despite the press telling us that all wages are rising. The number of zero hour contracts is still rising. For those people, income therefore is very flexible, so that budgeting is nigh on impossible! Can you help? Each of our churches has a box for items that the Lord's Larder needs and someone delivers the contents to the centre on a regular basis. Almost anything is received with thanks, provided that it is well within its best before date. Not fresh goods obviously, but tinned and dry foods, which will store for a period. Each month the website is updated with the food stuffs that they are most in need of. This month's list comprises jars of pasta sauce, tins of soup, tins of macaroni cheese, tins of hot dogs, tins of meatballs, tins of mackerel, tins of fruit, UHT milk, sugar, toothbrushes, shower gel, shampoo, ladies' and men's deodorant and nappies size 4,5 & 6. Please pop into the church and deposit one item (or more, if possible) after you have done your shopping, perhaps once a month? You will be helping the Lord's Larder to continue the sterling work that they are currently doing, and know that you are helping people who are really struggling. Thank you, Rosemary Rymer 2

ST BARNABAS CHURCH NEWS COMING UP . . . Harvest Festival : Sunday 6th October: Queen Camel residents will receive an invitation with this magazine to join us for our Harvest Service at 11.00 am on Sunday 6th October followed by the Harvest Lunch at 12.30 pm in the Memorial Hall. Everyone is most welcome to attend either or both of these. However, for catering purposes, we do need to know how many will be attending the Harvest Lunch. Please call Marian Davis on 01935 850 139 or Morwenna Ford on 01935 850 300 if you would like to join us. There will be no charge but suggested donations of £5 for adults and £3 for children will be welcomed for Christian Aid. The St Barnabas Christmas Fayre will be held on Saturday 30th November from 10.30 am. Please see the separate notice in this magazine about how you might be able to help and do keep the date free. HAPPENINGS IN THE LAST FEW WEEKS . . . St Barnabas now has its own website – www.stbarnabasqueencamel.org.uk - including an aerial video of the outside of the church and churchyard. We believe it gives a glimpse of what the church is about and also provides an insight into its involvement in village life. Please do have a look. Camel Club has returned after the summer break with renewed enthusiasm. Please see the separate entry in this magazine for further details. Similarly, Bumps, Tots & Toddlers have started once more and will continue to meet fortnightly during term time. Please see the notice in this magazine giving the October dates. An outside shed has been demolished in the churchyard and an old bier has been discovered in the remaining shed. We believe it may be Victorian or Edwardian and are in the process of verifying this. Further maintenance work continues both inside the church and outside in the churchyard. We now have a plaque by the North Gate placed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission as we have one headstone in the churchyard in memory of a young sailor, D Burgess. He was a Royal Naval Volunteer Reservist who was killed on the 8th October 1918, aged 17, a month before the end of World War I. The grave will be maintained annually by the Commission. ********* FROM THE REGISTERS Funeral: 25.9.2019 Andrew Clark at Yeovil Crematorium 6

His talk, entitled "The Life and Times of a Stupid Boy." Steve equated his experiences of joining and working in the National Provincial Bank as a young man, with the hapless youth, Pike, of "Dad's Army" fame. His talk was very entertaining. This was followed by Sue Diment, who read a poem which centred on a man sent out to buy an article of ladies underwear for his wife. His only way of being able to ask for the correct size was to equate it to his bag size! It was most amusing and Sue received a generous round of applause.

BOTTLE TOP COLLECTION Thank you to everyone who donates bottle tops for the Somerset & Dorset Air Ambulance. So far this year we have delivered an amazing 540 kg of bottle tops to the recycling company. The last time I took a carful, someone commented that they were impressed by the ever- increasing amounts of milk drunk by the residents of Queen Camel! Bottle tops – which must, PLEASE, have the triangular recycling logo shown above with the no 2 - can be left in the bottle top container that is usually at the Village Café each month OR they can be left in the old telephone box near the shop. The collecting bin near the Post Office is nothing to do with the Queen Camel collection. Ketchup bottle tops, toothpaste tube tops, coffee jar tops do not have the all- important no 2 logo on them – so please do not include them. Thank you all very much – and please keep drinking milk! FROM THE BISHOP Journeying together I was on the train today and a South Western Railway poster caught my eye. The headline was ‘Our Promise to You’. It then said: ‘We are passionate about delivering a great service for you and are here to make travelling easier.’ It went on to spell out what that meant in these words: • Be visible and available to you when you need us • Offer information and answer questions you may have • Make announcements about the destination and its calling point • Keep you informed should things be delayed during your journey Obviously this was talking about trains, but it got me thinking as some of those things could also be applied to my role as Bishop. My role, and that of Bishop Ruth, the archdeacons, our other colleagues and the central support staff in the Old Deanery is to support the work of mission and ministry which takes place across the parishes, chaplaincies and schools of the diocese. And we are all passionate about doing the best we can to support you and to ‘make your travelling easier’. And by ‘travelling’ we mean the walk that we have with Jesus as his followers and his disciples. One way we seek to support you by being visible and available. Bishop Ruth and I like nothing better than getting out and about across the length and breadth of the diocese, meeting people and hearing all that you are doing to live and tell the story of Jesus. Every month we meet hundreds of new people and we try, as and when we can, to answer questions and let people know what is going on. These parish magazine articles are another way in which we try to keep in touch and share what we are up to. The diocesan website, our e-newsletter, Connect, Manna magazine and our social media feeds on Facebook and Twitter are other places you can catch up with what we are doing, but more importantly to hear and read about what God is doing among us and within the communities we serve. The train poster ended with the words ‘Let us know how we are doing’. And that is another important reason why we love to get round the diocese so that we can hear what else we can do to support you and to share with you in living and telling others about the love of God. With my prayers and very best wishes The Right Revd Peter Hancock, Bishop of Bath and Wells _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Magazine Editor: Mrs Vanla Oxley, Queen Camel House, High Street, Queen Camel BA22 7NF Email: oxley.queencamel@gmail.com Copy by noon on 20th of the previous month, please 23
