The moment you’ve all been waiting for… The Grand Opening of the Pharmacy! Morelli’s Pharmacy will be opening on Wednesday January 16th. The pharmacy will be carrying most prescription medications and will be able to place an order for any medication they do not have on hand. The front of shop will carry basic cough/cold remedies; antacids and heartburn medication; over the counter pain medication; a selection of vitamin products appropriate for seniors; and a selection of Home Health Care products including incontinence sup- plies. We will also be bringing in an imported line of British chocolates and biscuits! If someone comes to us with a specific request we can always look into having it on hand for them.
From Our Wellness Coordinator Lisa Burke The cold weather is upon us and that means the GERMS are out! Wanted to send a friendly reminder to all Residents, Families and Friends of the importance of good hand hygiene and drinking plenty of fluids during this time of year. Also, remembering to bundle up on those cold days and seek warm fluids to help keep you warm. Happy New Year to all!
Rymal, Carrington, Stonechurch & Scotsdale… Tips for Beating the Winter Blues The New Year can be a difficult time for anyone, including our residents. It’s cold outside, it gets darker sooner and the weather is unpredictable – often making it difficult to travel. We have compiled six great tips to help you and our residents beat the winter blues! 1. Keep Active – it can be easy to hibernate during the cold winter months, but to improve your mental health it’s important to keep moving! Walking around the Village can be great exercise. Start out small by making trips, maybe just to the Village café. Then work your way up to a further location, such as the pet shop or if you’re loved one is in Retirement to the fitness centre in Long Term Care. 2. When Possible get Outside – if the weather doesn’t agree, the Village has many great are- as for you to go to get the necessary sunlight. Some great examples of places to sit are the Long Term Care green house off the community centre, and the café in the Retirement has some beautiful windows that provide a great deal of light. There is also the Solarium located on the second floor of Retirement that is bright, almost making you feel like you’re outside! Explore the Village and find your favourite spot to relax – enjoying the snow without having to shovel! 3. Keep Warm – a nice shawl or a lap blanket is a great way to stay warm while inside the Village. Don’t have either of these? Take a stroll to the General Store, as they have a great se- lection of items that you or your loved one may find useful. Staying warm with fuzzy socks and warm slippers are also a great way to stay cozy during the winter months. 4. Eat Healthy – during this time of year it can be hard not to keep eating the delicious treats around us! But don’t forget there are healthy options that can feel like treats such as, veggies and dip, hummus and crackers/vegetables, or assortment of fruit and pretzels. Get creative and try something new! 5. Take Up a New Hobby – the Village offers a variety of activities available if you are looking to try something new. Our Recreation team helps run knitting circles, crossword groups, book groups, painting and crafting groups, even horticulture groups! Pick up one of the monthly calendars and try something new every week. You never know, you may find a new passion! 6. Visits with Friends and Family – most importantly be social whenever you can! Reach out to a neighbour in the Village you’ve never gotten to know before. Call an old friend to re- connect, or even book a lunch or dinner date with friend or family in the Ruby. Take every opportunity to reach out to those who are important to you and show them you care with your attention and time. When we look back those are the moments we hold the most dear. If you are looking for more ideas for beating the winter blues do not hesitate to reach out to your neighbourhood team members. We are always here to offer support and a helping hand to residents and family alike! Let us know your tried and tested ways to beat the winter blues.
Rymal, Carrington, Stonechurch & Scotsdale… Family Council Reminder Our next meeting will be Tuesday January 21st at 7:00pm. We will be discussing Bed Entrapment and our Falls Program. What is bed entrapment? Tyler will be discussing the system we use and why this is such an im- portant program. Dan, our Long Term Care Kinesiologist, will be discussing our Falls program and the differ- ent systems we use to help limit and reduce falls. Is there a topic you would like to discuss at an upcoming meeting? Perhaps a system in the Village you have always wondered about? Please contact – ty- ler.bonneville@schlegelvillages.com or sara.dykstra@schlegelvillages.com and we can discuss it at an upcom- ing meeting with the specialist leader. We are looking forward to everyone’s feedback! Palliative Committee We are looking for volunteers for our Palliative Committee at the Village. Also we are looking for a gently used quilt to use for a dignity blanket. The dignity blanket is used when our resident’s leave the Village for the last time and draped over them. If you are interested in donating your time or a quilt please email – Sha- ron.pearce@schlegelvillages.com or amy.fyfe@schlegelvillages.com and we will reach out to you. Our next meeting will be Tuesday January 8th at 3:30pm in the Village Chapel. Thank you so much! Friendly Reminder Just a friendly reminder to take a look through your loved one’s clothing to ensure they have appropriate at- tire for the winter weather. Also if you notice there is a piece of clothing in your loved one’s room that does not belong to them please pass them along to the Nurse in the Neighbourhood or your Neighbourhood Co- ordinator. Lost Clothing Each Neighbourhood is starting a master list of items that have been misplaced. Our hope is that we will share these lists within all the Neighbourhoods and with the team to help locate missing pieces in a timely fashion. Please reach out to your Neighbourhood Coordinator if you have an item you would like to add to this list or having any questions regarding it. If at any time, you have questions or concerns regarding Scotsdale and Stonechurch neighbourhoods, please contact Tyler Bonneville at Ext. 8036 or Tyler.bonneville@schlegelvillages.com for concerns regarding Carrington and Rymal neighbourhoods, please contact Sara Dykstra Ext. 8048 or Sara.dykstra@schlegelvillages.com
Happy New Year! A common tradition is to create a New Year’s resolution, in which a person resolves to change an undesired trait or behavior, to accomplish a personal goal or otherwise improve their life. Generally, these resolutions focus on our weaknesses, rather than our strengths. It is human nature to look for the negative in everything first. Schlegel Villages is a strength-based organization. Strengths-based approach is an organiza- tional philosophy that focuses on highlighting an individual’s personal strengths (team member’s characteristics and resident’s characteristics and physical capabilities) and supporting them to their full potential. Instead of being focused on what our team members or residents cannot do, or the areas that they struggle with; the strengths-based approach finds ways to help the individual excel by focusing on their abilities, talents, and strengths. By recognizing each team member and resident as an individual, we are able to create a much stronger and cohesive village and to combat the deficit of “learned helplessness”. One of my top five strengths is a relator. The relator strength is defined as a person who enjoys close relationships with others and find deep satisfaction in working with others to achieve the same goal. However, individuals with the relator strength tend to be drawn to people they already know. It is my goal and resolution this year to build meaningful relationships and get to know more residents and team members on a personal basis. Stop by for a chat and let’s get to know each other. Thanks, Melissa “My New Year’s resolution is to follow through with my New Year’s resolution.” - Unknown Williamsburg, Becker, & Ailsa Craig Neighbourhoods If at any time, you have questions or concerns regarding Williamsburg, Becker & Alisa Craig, neighbourhoods, please let me know. Did You Know? What should I know before buying a Manual Wheelchair? 1. Get the Right Financial Support and Warranty Coverage The Province of Ontario offers an ‘Assistive Devices Program’ that provides financial assistance up to 75% of the cost of selected wheeled walkers, crutches, manual and power wheelchairs as required for ongoing daily mobility. This program is open to any permanent resident of Ontario who has a valid health card. An ADP-registered occupational or physiotherapist will assess your functional mobility status and recommend the appropriate device that best meets your needs Purchasing an assistive device on your own without involving this ADP person will mean that you cannot access the ADP program Many mobility stores will employ an ADP-registered occupational or physiotherapist who can perform this assessment for you, however they may charge you between $80-$100 for this Purchasing a new device tends to give you a greater operational life of your resource, rather than buying a used one; it comes with a warranty for any needed repairs. WH Recommendation: talk to your kinesiologist about your assistive device needs; they will refer you to an ADP-approved occupational therapist who can start this application process for free with you and help you secure a temporary assistive device until your personal one comes in. To learn more about Ontario’s ADP, visit https://www.ontario.ca/page/assistive-devices-program 2. Get the Right Equipment and the Right Set Up Shoulder pain is a far too common problem for manual wheelchair users. Approximately half of manual wheelchair users will experience some type of shoulder pain, and it can be prevented. Everyone is unique and has individual routines and daily responsibilities. All of these need to be taken into consideration when choosing equipment and setting it up Certain things will always increase the efficiency of a push and minimize the risk of shoulder injury. For example: a full-time manual wheelchair user should be provided with a fully customizable wheelchair made of the lightest possible material Next is the configuration of the wheelchair frame: your wheelchair should be configured to your body and fit like a glove. One of the most important adjustments that needs to be made to achieve this is the axle position. For the smoothest roll and the least resistance, your weight should be over the push wheels. You’ll know your weight is over the push wheels if, when reaching down to your side, your middlefinger is pointing to the axle. Height of the seat is also important for an efficient push. If the axle height is too high or too low, you will have to work harder. To check for proper seat height, place your arms down to your side. Your fingertips should extend just past the axle. What about your additional components? Make sure your seat cushion provides the appropriate amount of support and skin protection based on your needs and ability to weight shift. Choose a back support that provides the amount of support you need It’s always important to have your seating therapist look at your position in the wheelchair and watch you push. They can do any additional tweaks based on your individual needs. This section has been adapted from an article posted by Permobil Canada. To view the original please visit the blog section of their website at www.permobile.ca WH Recommendation: talk to your kinesiologist about your wheelchair needs; they will refer you to an occupational therapist who can perform this assessment for free and make the best recommendation.
