Presidents Report Firstly, I would like to thank our committee members for all of the effort they have put into our club – without which, there would be no club. It is OUR club and it is what we make it, so thank you to all who contribute. Secondly, I would like to thank the coaches and managers who all give countless hours before, during and after the season. Thirdly, the players that turn up to training and games week after week and do their best for their team and club are to be congratulated. Football and other sporting clubs are an extension of community; they are people coming together for their shared purpose of instilling fitness, discipline and teamwork in their children – important life lessons for children to take into adulthood. At the same time, sporting clubs provide a social outlet for parents and families. Playing football isn’t always about winning, although the dream of it is what drives players to improve. Our club’s goal is to promote a culture of having fun – win, lose or draw. This season saw a couple of our teams down on numbers. Fortunately, the coaches have kept those teams committed to fight on through adversity and see the season out. Now that the season has come to a close we will start to build for next season. I would like you all to spread the word to friends, family, work colleagues and whoever will listen in order to grow our club. AFL is a great sport and we have a great club with a great culture; let’s sell it to the Hawkesbury! A big thanks to our sponsors: Windsor RSL and Neighbourhood Quality Meats, and thanks to Baker’s Delight Richmond for their support. Thank you for participating in the 2017 season. Stay safe and I look forward to seeing you all again next season. Go Saints! Andrew Morgan PRESIDENT
Auskick – Brendan Howden, Mark Howden Woweeeee!!!! What a big year for Saints Auskick Heaps of new families have joined the family club to play the family sport. Every Sunday morning’ we’ve had boys and girls runnin’ jumpin’ kickin’ & handballin’ with some big brothers and sisters joining’ mums and dads and some nans and pops in the sunshine at Bensons Lane. Tommy Hafey would’ve been rapt! Our new Auskick coordinator Megan has done a great job this season in preparing all the sessions and organising the Auskick family to man the various skills/drills, to get out on the field in the kids vs parents games and to look after the equipment and of course the washing roster. So many people got involved this year it’s impossible to thank everyone here, but a special mention to Emily, Grant and the two Nathans who were terrific. Ryan was also great and although we missed him late in the season he did us all proud by trekking Kokoda. What a wonderful experience at 17 years old. 27 of our little champs burned up the turf at Spotless during the half time break when the Giants took on the Swans in July. That was about half of our Saints squad and we’re looking forward to the others getting the same experience next season. 7 of our little champs made the transition to the U/9’s and slightly more competitive games. Speaking of 9’s some of our parents pulled on the boots to play in the “non-contact” AFL 9’s during a 6 game season on cold Monday nights down at Bensons. We’re hoping to have another season of AFL 9’s sometime in the off season in more hospitable conditions. It’s a great way to get fit, practice the skills and to make new friends. Keep an eye out for info coming from Megan who doubles her Auskick work with AFL 9’s. A big thanks to David, Jake, Megan and the other AFL staff for their support & in developing our Auskick Cluster with neighbouring clubs which we meet at Our Gala Day at Emu Plains. Their work will reap great benefits if we can get a fixture that keeps our U9’s & U10’s together each weekend. A big thanks to our Auskick sponsors The Nor-West Jets for the Jumpers, The National Australia Bank for their continued support of Auskick and Grill’d Healthy Burgers at Rouse Hill & Penrith for the Awesome awards which we were able to share with the whole club. Well done Auskickers on a great season and see you all again in 2018.
Under 9’s – Coaches Bryson McMillen and Tom McBurney 2017 was a successful and enjoyable season for all the Special Mentions under 9’s. We had a range of experience from second season players, 2016 Auskickers, totally new players to the Thankyou to the Auskickers of Shakira and Jayden game and some late additions from this year’s Auskickers. Buys, Jensen Taylor, Oliver O’Hare, Connor Sharp, All the players have improved their kicking, passing and Liam Dowling who all stepped up at various times catching skills and general knowledge of the game. throughout the season. The excellent skills they The experienced boys from last year formed a solid shown is a great sign that the Saints Under 9’s will structure for our team allowing many of the new players to be a strong outfit in 2018! grow in confidence and work together to record many solid games throughout the season. Alex McBurney was a lethal player week in week out and dominated his opposition every game. Nathan Barkas was a consistent bull terrier who attacked the ball whenever it was near him. Jack Taylor was a tackling machine and showed his sound skills consistently each week. Chayse Hollows was a strong and determined runner of the ball who never took a backward step. You could always count on Evan McBurney, one of the youngest boys, who was always in the middle of the action. Flyn Morgan grew in confidence and you could always rely on him to be in the action when the ball was near him. Thomas Molle joined up later in the season but always used his strong kicks to gain good field position. Huntar Paull always played strongly and just loved tackling anyone with the ball. The soccer converts of Jack Woodbury and Luke McMillen were fast learners of the game and always active runners looking for the ball. Seth Roeland and Sean Tatton continued to improve their skills throughout the season, becoming much more involved in the latter half of the season. Liam Tatton’s season was cut short due to injury and I’m sure he will make up for it in 2018. Thanks to the parents who made it to various training sessions and assisted as the more helpers we have, the more ball time the kids get to practise their skills.
Under 10’s – Coaches Gordan Tardrew In 2017 we started with most of the kids just wanting to have a bit of a kick around and a couple that were already showing their competitiveness. Their development in skill and team work has improved tremendously as the year has progressed. The majority of the team now are able to execute the basic skills with passion and the competitive spirit required to play our great game. Thank you to the children for their attention, commitment and progress for season 2017 . Thank you to the parents for getting the kids to the games, washing the Jerseys and helping out in general every week, we do appreciate your efforts. I would also like to thank Heath and Amy Sharpe along with Kristi Hollows for their support and help throughout the season. Finally thank you to the Saints committee for making the time and putting in the effort to advance and develop Juniors in AFL. Gordon Tardrew (Tardy)
Under 11’s – Coaches Will Wallace, David Barclay, Nick Fowler The 2017 season was a great success for the Saints U/11’s. A word from your Manager Mark Lorschy We had a great nucleus of experienced players progressing A huge congratulations to the team, the coaches and the through from the 2016 season and had an excellent group parents for a terrific season. Well done to everyone of new players join the team. The boys are an incredibly involved. rewarding group to have the opportunity to coach and it I thoroughly enjoyed managing the team this year. I was fantastic to see them consistently improving on their especially enjoyed my interactions with the three skills and fitness each week and bonding together coaches of the team, Will Wallace, Nick Fowler and effectively as a team unit. David Barclay. Each of these gentlemen offered something unique and genuine: each of them has a great heart for coaching. The season began with a challenging start with the team In many ways, this season was a challenging one for the being graded in the Division 1 competition and facing stiff boys. We started off with 10 boys and finished the competition from a number of clubs with greater depth. season with 13 with the addition of Sam, Hayden and This proved to be a great opportunity for us to develop a Angus. The tight team numbers resulted in the boys strong and resilient style of play which ultimately paid off in playing most games for the full 60 mins, whereas the the results that we saw following the regrading of the team opposition always had the ability rest players. Thank you to the St Clair. We truly were the ‘comeback kids’ in the middle of U10’s coach Gordon Tardrew and U12’s coach Brad Hansen. Throughout the season two 11 year old boys, the season and could have easily starred in some of the who were playing in the U12’s team, supported our team ‘Tissot Last Two Minutes’ video posts on the AFL Facebook many times, often playing two games in three hours. Unfortunately, our best laid form a sound base from which to spring into Season 2018 plans fell apart on two occasions, and resulted in and be genuine contenders for the flag. forfeiting the games. Having said that, I really admired the way the boys approached those forfeited games. Lastly I would like to put a big call out to the parents of This has been a genuinely superb group of wonderful boys the team. The boy’s games could not go ahead without and an equally great group of supportive parents to work goal umpires, laundry, oranges and the ‘best on ground’ with. We are really thankful to everyone for their award. All parents approached each game with a contributions with oranges, washing jerseys, goal umpiring willingness to assist, for which I am truly grateful. and best on ground points. Thanks also go to Brodie and Fletcher and their families for helping us out and having a run with us during the season and to the Under 10’s for their support. Our particular gratitude goes to David Barclay, Nick Fowler for the significant time and effort that they put into their assistant coach roles and running training sessions so effectively each week, as well as to Mark Lorschy for his extensive and tireless organisation and preparations as Manager. We also extend our appreciation to Brendan Howden for his wisdom and consistent, unfailing and significant support throughout the season as Coaching Co-ordinator as well as to Andrew Morgan for his leadership of the Club in the President’s role.
Jack Barclay Jack is a superb, gritty on-baller who thrives on playing in the centre. He always gives 100% and tackles other kids often twice his size with grit and no hesitation at all! Jack has superb skills and awareness in attack and should also be congratulated on his selection in the Giants U’11 Squad this season – a well deserved accolade for a highly talented player. Saaron Boshammer Brand new to AFL this season, Saaron made an immediate impression with his towering kicks and powerful runs with the ball. Saaron is a really strong runner off the half back line, providing wonderful rebounds out of defence and his size and skill also make him a key player in the centre and up forward, both with the ball and when laying tackles on the other team. Sam Braid Sam has excellent grit and good game awareness. He shows wonderful ball skills under pressure, always runs hard at the footy despite the size of players around him and positions himself beautifully. It was really rewarding to see how much Sam developed in his season with us, always demonstrating a great attitude, a good ‘footy brain’ and accurate handballing and kicking to teammates, even when closely tagged. William Dalton William is a gutsy player who always gives of his best. He gives a consistent effort throughout each game and has shown great versatility across the paddock both as a stout defender and an agile forward with hunger for the ball and good positional awareness. William is a skilled player with a big heart and plenty of focus and has been a pleasure to coach. Callum Draper Callum is a versatile player who gives of his best and can play well in any position across the ground really well. Callum has great game and spatial awareness, positioning himself effectively around the field and working hard to always have repeated attempts at the ball to gain possession and maintain pressure on the opposition. Callum always works hard to apply new skills and ideas and is a pleasure to coach. Hayden Elliott Hayden is another one of our new ‘finds’ this season. He started from his first game with a ‘bang’ showing the game awareness of a much more experienced player. He has wonderful marking and passing skills, is a reliable and accurate kick and is an excellent player in any position. Hayden is very talented and will continue to develop into a standout player in the years to come. Archie Evans Archie put in a number of games as a skilled and reliable fullback, making many saves as the last man in defence. Archie’s capacity to run strongly at the ball and to take tough, contested marks are an asset to him, as is his capacity to kick and handpass coolly, strategically and with precision when under pressure. Graeme Fowler Graeme is another tough on-baller, equally at home in the centre as an inside or outside runner, and loves floating up forward to kick some goals as well. Graeme is a determined defender and we admire his passion, commitment and never- say-die attitude regardless of the stage a match is up to. Angus Lehmann Angus joined us partway through the season and showed great enthusiasm, heart and interest in furthering his skills and experience. Angus competes solidly for the ball and is not afraid to put his body over the ball or to go into a difficult contest. He particularly enjoyed playing up forward and the challenge of trying to kick a few goals! Solomon Lorschy Solomon is a player with great agility. He has a real ability to both move and change direction quickly and is always a genuine threat in the forward line as he combines these attributes with great ball sense and a superb awareness of where the goals are. Solomon shows the versatility to play in a variety of positions and is a great motivator of the team. Luke Ringbauer Luke showed great talent and skill, both on the ball in the ruck as a versatile ‘tall’ player in the centre, roaming the breadth of the field and providing great forward momentum and steely defence, and proved equally adept up forward as a ‘Buddy Franklin’ like leader at the ball, charging at the contest and relishing the opportunity to pivot and have a shot at goal. Kennan Wallace Kennan is a great ‘team man’ and always gives of his best in any position and strives to do what is asked of him. He runs as hard as he can to pressure the opposition players in defence and puts his body over the ball without hesitating. Kennan kicked a good goal against Blacktown when they were leading the comp. Liam Wallace Liam initially began the season in a tagging role, shutting down some of the best players in the competition with his continued pressure and presence. As the season progressed, Liam also relished the opportunity to play more freely around the ground and showed some great ball skills, teamwork and toughness in defence.
Under 12’s– Coach Brad Hanson Boys, what a fantastic season you have all had in division 1. I am very proud the way you have all developed and improved throughout the season. I am very honoured to coach such a great (TEAM) of young men. At the start of the season I was informed that we were selected to play in division 1, I didn’t know what to expect, but knew it wasn’t going to be an easy competition. I was excited when the new recruits showed up to training, Brad, Connor, Brayden, Lachlan, Josh, Patrick, and Sam who joined later in the season. You boys have added great strength and depth to an already fantastic team from last season, this is what we needed to be completive in div 1. I was impressed how quickly you all gelled with the rest of the boys, and knew this was going to be a team that could make finals. I won’t go into details on each player this year as it would be a novel. In the first half of the season I rotated all of you around to get a feel of what position suites each player and where you would be best suited. This was sometimes tricky as we have players away sick or injured week to week and having a larger bench did benefit us. I was very happy with the team structure which we now have running into the later half of the season. In the last few weeks of our home and away season we had Campbelltown Swans threatening to Knock us out of fourth position and the finals. You had to win both games against Camden and Baulko, to get a spot in the finals, you won both games and made it into the finals Woo Hoo. Your Camden Blues game was by far the best game you played all season as it was a must win, you boys gelled at the right time believed in yourselves. You were harder at the football, you sent a clear message out that Hawksbury are here to play finals football. Boys as I am writing this report after you just won your semi-final against Emu Plains. I am pumped and very happy, as they have been our arch rival for a few years and finally won in a convincing manner. I’m very proud and this shows how much you have all improved and developed individually and as a team. See you all next year Brad
Under 14’s– Coach Andrew Morgan Sorry guys, but I haven’t done individual comments on players this season. Our numbers at the start of the season were low and we had to bring our Under 13s players (who were also low on numbers) up to combine the two age groups. As a result, it was always going to be a tough season - with a younger side in a strong competition. However, although we were up against it, we had a handful of wins that gave the boys a real boost of confidence. The boys continued to fight on, even when we were on the wrong end of several results, which is an admirable quality. They continued to turn up every week, sometimes knowing the result would not go their way and I must thank them for this. Special thanks must be made to: Manager Steve McGrath Runner Josh McCall And to all of the parents who helped out by running water, bringing oranges or lollies and assisting on game days. I look forward to seeing you all again in 2018. Go Saints! Andrew Morgan COACH
Under 15’s– Coach Brett Starling What a great 2017 season we have had. We’ve had plenty of first timers, thanks to the team bringing their mates down. It was pleasing to see them all come down to training, week in and week out. They were all keen to improve their skills and game sense, ready to apply it for their next round. I was impressed to see our experienced players take leadership roles to help mould the team. We had a simple game plan and when it worked, we matched it with any team. To give credit to all the boys, they maintained their integrity and fought as a united team supporting and encouraging each other. I am proud of how you all stuck together and backed your mates. By continuing that momentum and intent week in week out, I look forward to seeing the magic we can make together for the 2018 season. A word from your Manager The U15 have demonstrated their strong bond as they end their 2017 season. As a united team, they’ve celebrated together and help their heads high in defeat. Many of our boys have played together since their early days in U10 footy. Others have joined over the years, and a number, as recently as this season. They have learned many skills and improved their game sense from each other. Listening, acting upon advice and leading by example, have been areas of strength for our team. Watching our team from the sidelines has been both exciting and exhausting! From the delight of well executed goals, to the wince of hard, body on body tackles, we’ve been through it all with them, without the sweat, bruises and twisted ankles! Thank you to our biggest fans. I’ve been the manager for 7 years, and in that time, I’ve been very fortunate to have a fantastic group of families who support our boys each and every week. Thank you for making our rosters work. It is certainly a sight to behold- watching 18 strapping young men inhale three or more jelly snakes at half-time! Enjoy the off season, and we look forward to seeing you all next year to do it again….. Lisa McGrath
Oliver Abell As a first year player, Oliver fitted in well with the team. He always had a smile and loved the chance to kick a goal. Caleb Chase Caleb was never short of comment or two, ‘Dukes’ kept the opposition on their toes with his goal kicking abilities. It was great to have Caleb back for the year. Joshua Connelly Josh stood up this year and demonstrated he has the ability when he puts his mind to it. Josh had a great year at full back, where he was second to none at attacking the ball. Ben Heron Read Ben was another first year player who learned fast and always tried. He improved his skills and knowledge over the year and always listened to advice. Thomas Jones Thomas started the year on fire and took on board the message to talk loudly and clearly. We missed him and his enthusiasm for part of the season due to his injury. Bailey Langham Bailey is the quiet assassin, though you could always rely on him beating his opponent to the ball, as he is a lot tougher than he looks. Harrison Long We all know when Harrison is coming, he surprises a lot of his opponents with the way he tackled a player of any size. Jackson McGrath Jackson is developing the confidence in himself as a player, to back his skills and speed. His improvement in his game sense is an asset to the team. Sebastian Mitrovic-Waine It was great to have Sebastian back late this year. He showed us he still has the skills and the strength to leave his mark on the team. Ethan Spriggs He has shown a lot of improvement this year and when he has a go, he is a great asset to the team. He always leads the way at training and never gives in. Mitchell Starling Mitchell has had a good year in front of goal and still takes those marks out of nowhere. He always trains hard and leads the way. Jarrod Stone Jarrod thrives on contested football. He takes almost as much pride on restricting his opponents as he does backing up his team mates. Kurt Tomaniczka Kurt was a first year player who learned the game fast. What a motor! He ran hard each game and fought as hard as anyone. Nothing was a problem for Kurt. Noah Vanderburg Noah showed how tough and fast he can be when he backs himself. He is a great utility player who stands up and shows he is a great leader. Joel Williams Joel backs himself, making him hard to stop. He showed his commitment to fitness and taking pride on his performance each and every week. Connor Windebank-Bozac The forward turned backmen, Connor showed this year he has the strength and ability as his confidence has grown. Great to see the improvement. Mikail Yildirim Mikail was a first year player who showed us that it doesn’t take a pretty kick or game experience to make a player work hard and fight for his team. Samuel McGrath Stepping up from the 14’s, Sam didn’t take a backward step and tried hard at all the jobs I gave him. Thanks, Sam. Brayden Shields Stepping up from the 14’s, Brayden never stopped trying. He always surprised his opponents with his tenacity and skills. Thanks, Brayden.
Under 15’s Girls– Coach Simmone Kennedy, Mark Pendergast Returning after such a successful 2016, we were unsure if we were going to be able to field a Youth Girls group this year with the loss of so many who were too old to stay with us. The club combined our 12s and 15s and thankfully we were able to put together a team of 13 girls, which grew to 14 late in the season. Unfortunately, this season we didn't get to sing our club song but the girls should definitely keep their heads held high as they tried their best each week in the red, white and black (and pink). Numerous times I heard from other clubs that they enjoyed playing against our girls because they played fair, were competitive and good sports which is a credit to them. At the beginning of the season, I gave the girls a slip of paper and one of the questions I asked them was what they were hoping to get out of this season. A common answer was 'to improve my footy'. I can happily say to the girls that all of you can mark that one as done! Everyone received Best & Fairest points over the season, which proves they all had moments of fantastic footy. Their skills improved each week and they came together as a team. The score board did not reflect the girls achievements this season and with more experience, confidence in their abilities and practice of their craft, exciting things are definitely ahead. We had a few outings together this year going ice skating, enjoying a pizza dinner out together and we also had fun at the footy cheering on the Giants, Giants women and the Swans, kick to kick was always a highlight. Despite the girls varied ages the camaraderie grew within the group which was great to see. Our season was a roller coaster ride but these girls took it all in their stride. We were often outsized and outnumbered, with no bench for rotating players. Even so the girls still gave it their best shot each week. I think we all learnt something about ourselves this season, myself included. One thing I think we learnt is that it's the challenges that build better character and a better team. If they continue with their footy as I hope they do, they'll be kicking plenty of goals in the future. The words, "persistent, resilient and spirited" come to mind when I think of this great group of u/15s girls. I did enjoy coaching and getting to spend time with them all. Thanks girls for putting up with me again this year and most importantly congratulations for sticking it out through a tough season, right to the end. Proud of you all!!!
Volunteer’s A major part of any club is it’s volunteer’s. On behalf of the Hawkesbury Saints Committee we need to say a huge thankyou to all of our Volunteer’s. Every game we ask our parents to help out on the sidelines, whether it be Goal Umpire, Best On Ground, bringing those all important oranges for our kids or working on the BBQ or canteen. Without your effort every weekend, our teams would not run so efficiently and effectively. Thankyou to our Volunteer Coaches, Managers, Water Carriers and Runner’s. Your day in day out dedication to help our young Saints play every weekend is not without a huge heart felt thanks. Not to forget the Hawkesbury Saints Committee who volunteer their time every weekend (and most weekdays) to mark up the grounds, stock the canteen, put through the rego’s and attend meetings with the AFL. On behalf of the parents and Players, I would like to say THANKYOU for your time, effort and passion. High 5’s all round. Jess Wagner – (Mum and all round Saints Sideliner)
