The Baptism of Jesus by John A baptism needs 3 things: people, water, and the Holy Spirit. This dance begins with people coming together, then -- it rains! So we have water. Then -- the simple act of being in water turns into a sacred moment. A moment that changes John's life, Jesus' life, and our lives. Forever. Dancers: Addison Berndt Starleen Cooley Ethan McClain Kaley McClain Keri Sutter Composer: Michael Praetorius, arr. by Ruth Barrett Arno Pianist: Amy Ellis Surgite, a sacred dance company, was formed in Albuquerque in 1985. Their dancers have participated in hundreds of worship services and led hundreds of workshops for people of many different denominations in nineteen different states. Their ministry is to use movement to help people explore their faith and their relationships with those around them. The director, Keri Sutter has over 40 years' experience directing and choreographing liturgical dance, and leads workshops and dances in worship services with congregations all over the United States. She says, "The Bible tells us to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind, that we should love and serve God with our entire being. The Bible also tells us that we should praise God with timbrel and dance! Just as music adds a dimension to our prayers and praises that cannot be duplicated in any other way, using our entire body to pray or to praise, to petition or to preach the Gospel adds a dimension and clarity that cannot be duplicated through other means." The use of dance in the worship of God Dance is one of the oldest art forms, and has been used in Jewish and Christian worship since at least the time of King David, if not earlier. Jesus tells us, in Mark 12:29-31, to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind, that we should love and serve God with our entire being. Psalms 149 and 150 also tell us that we should praise God with timbrel and dance! Dance has been a part of Christian worship since the earliest days of the Church, and several of the early Church Fathers mention dance either as a part of worship, or as something worshipers could do in unison with the angels, who dance around the throne of God. While dance was removed from worship by Protestant churches during the Reformation (along with vestments, pipe organs, stained glass windows, and other accouterments), it has enjoyed a resurgence during the twentieth and twenty- first centuries. Stewardship of Time Luke 3:21 –A voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased." Jesus hears God’s words of comfort and love, and his life was never the same. At our baptism we also receive God’s promises as God declares us sons and daughters. Baptism is the defining moment for our lives. In response to the Marshall Fire Hope has work for us to do Hope has work for us to do. It asks us to resist going numb when the world within us or beyond us is falling apart. In the height of despair, in the deepest darkness, hope calls us to open our hearts, our eyes, our hands, that we might engage the world when it breaks our hearts. Hope goes with us, step by step, providing the sustenance we most need. --Jan Richardson from adventdoor.com Good Samaritan Fund Amazon Smile We have been blessed to be able to help others Amazon donates 0.5% of the purchase price through our Good Samaritan Fund this past year. directly to Cross of Hope. GIVE TO ELCA DISASTER Message from Lutheran Disaster Response RESPONSE On Dec. 30, the Marshall Fire ignited in Boulder County, Colo. Over 6,200 acres burned quickly, forcing the evacuations of 35,000 people. The fire spread throughout suburban neighborhoods, destroying over 900 homes. While December wildfires are rare, the severe drought in the western United States created hazardous conditions that allowed the Marshall Fire to spread rapidly. This unusual fire is one of the impacts of a changing climate and will become increasingly more common. Lutheran Disaster Response is engaging with the Rocky Mountain Synod and Lutheran Family Services Rocky Mountains to respond to the impact of the fires. We anticipate that immediate needs will include emotional and spiritual care, temporary shelters, food and other necessities. With local partners, Lutheran Disaster Response will continue to accompany survivors throughout the years of long-term recovery. Your gifts will support wildfire survivors. Gifts to "U.S. wildfires" will be used in full (100%) to assist those affected by wildfires, until the response is complete. Or make a gift to "Lutheran Disaster Response" so 12 we can respond to disasters whenever and wherever they strike.
