Sophia’s Kitchen
conducted a survey of
300 adult guests
during the last two
weeks of June 2021.
Volunteers assisted
Methodist nursing
students in
completing 20
questions on the
survey. We currently
serve an average of
208 guests each day,
for an average of
4130 guests a month.
Factoring in repeat
customers, we
estimate 3,469
unique individuals
come monthly to
Sophia’s Kitchen.
This survey helps us to
better understand our
guests so we can
continue to serve them
to the best of our ability.
Many guests wrote
comments in the
margins to explain their
situations. Many come
to eat because they
don't have the ability to
cook at home. There is
no stove, or gas to work
the stove. Asked if they
believed in God, many
answered yes, but it was
a trigger question for a
few, bringing up old
pains and hurts. Most
comments were very
positive about the
kitchen. "You guys are
great!" and "Keep up the
good work!"

“Enseguida tomó Jesús los panes, y después de dar gracias a Dios, se los fue repartiendo
a los que se habían sentado a comer. Igualmente les fue dando de los pescados todo lo
que quisieron. Después de que todos se saciaron, dijo a sus discípulos: “Recojan los
pedazos sobrantes, para que no se desperdicien”. Los recogieron y con los pedazos que
sobraron de los cinco panes llenaron doce canastos”.
Querida familia, en el Evangelio de hoy tenemos un milagro, par mi, uno de los más
asombrosos de Jesús. Hoy Jesús le da de comer a una multitud y lo que tenía para darle
de comer a la multitud era tan solo cinco panes de cebada y dos pescados. Pero ese día la
abundancia se deja notar cuando al finalizar la comida, para más de cinco mil personas,
se recolectaron doce canastas llenas cuando todos ya estaban satisfechos de haber
comido. Aquí está el fragmento del Evangelio en el cual me quiero detener: Enseguida
tomó Jesús los panes, y después de dar gracias a Dios, se los fue repartiendo a los que se habían sentado a comer. Igualmente les
fue dando de los pescados todo lo que quisieron. Después de que todos se saciaron, dijo a sus discípulos: “Recojan los pedazos
sobrantes, para que no se desperdicien”. Los recogieron y con los pedazos que sobraron de los cinco panes llenaron doce canastos.
Uno de los aspectos de los cuales siempre debemos hablar sobre Dios es la Providencia Divina, y lo que ella hace en
nuestras vidas, leamos el siguiente pasaje de la Biblia: “Fíjense en las aves del cielo, que no siembran, ni cosechan, ni guardan
alimentos en graneros. Sin embargo, el Padre del Cielo, el Padre de ustedes, las alimenta. ¿No valen ustedes mucho más que las
aves? (Mt. 6, 26), el pasaje es claro, el Padre de ustedes, ¿qué?, ¿nuestro Padre?, Sí, nuestro Padre. Es nuestro Padre, y El como
Padre no dejará que nos falte nada. Es esto lo que nosotros llamamos Providencia Divina: “No anden tan preocupados ni digan:
¿tendremos alimento? ¿qué beberemos?, o ¿tendremos ropas para vestirnos? Los que no conocen a Dios se afanan por eso, pero
el Padre del Cielo, Padre de ustedes, sabe que necesitan todo eso”. (Mt. 6, 31-32). Gran parte de nuestra preocupación es esta,
pensar que nos falta algo cuando en realidad lo tenemos todo, en Dios siempre lo tendremos todo. La Providencia no nos suelta, nos
da paz y claridad y además la seguridad de que en Dios tenemos todo. Como sacerdote he sido testigo del dolor que cargan ciertas
personas por no concretar proyectos, no resolver problemas, no poder sanar el alma o vivir con ansiedad y angustia ciertas
situaciones que nos hacen perder la confianza en Dios. Pero, ¿saben cual es el problema de esto?, es que creemos en nosotros
mismos y no en Dios. Creemos que nosotros podemos y no dejamos que Dios pueda. Creemos que todo está en nuestras manos
cuando en realidad todo se nos puede escapar en un segundo. La Providencia es el remedio a nuestra alma y confiar en ella es la
sanación para ella.
Entonces, de manera muy especial te invito a que seamos capaces de vivir en la confianza a la Providencia, cuando nos
arrodillamos a la Providencia de Dios nada puede faltar, porque tenemos un Padre que nos ama y piensa en nosotros todo el tiempo.
Te regalo a continuación una oración para pedir la Providencia. Rezo por ti. Dios te bendiga. Padre Julio.
Dios y Señor Nuestro, Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo, cuya Providencia no se equivoca en todo lo que dispone, y nada acontece que no
lo ordene, rendidamente te pedimos y suplicamos que apartes de nosotros todo lo que nos pueda separar de Ti, y nos concedas
todo lo que nos conviene. Haz que en toda nuestra vida busquemos primeramente Tu Reino y que seamos justos en todo; que no
nos falte el trabajo, el techo bajo el cual nos cobijamos, ni el pan de cada día. Líbranos de las enfermedades y de la miseria; que
ningún mal nos domine. Sálvanos del pecado, el mayor de todos los males, y que siempre estemos preparados santamente a la
muerte. Por Tu Misericordia, Señor y Dios Nuestro, haz que vivamos siempre en Tu Gracia. Así seremos dignos de adorar Tu amable
Providencia en la eterna bienaventuranza. Amén.

sus discípulos.
Estaba cerca la Pascua, festividad de los judíos. Viendo Jesús que mucha gente lo seguía, le dijo a Felipe: “¿Cómo compraremos
pan para que coman éstos?” Le hizo esta pregunta para ponerlo a prueba, pues él bien sabía lo que iba a hacer. Felipe le
respondió: “Ni doscientos denarios de pan bastarían para que a cada uno le tocara un pedazo de pan”. Otro de sus discípulos,
Andrés, el hermano de Simón Pedro, le dijo: “Aquí hay un muchacho que trae cinco panes de cebada y dos pescados. Pero, ¿qué
es eso para tanta gente?” Jesús le respondió: “Díganle a la gente que se siente”. En aquel lugar había mucha hierba. Todos, pues,
se sentaron ahí; y tan sólo los hombres eran unos cinco mil.
Enseguida tomó Jesús los panes, y después de dar gracias a Dios, se los fue repartiendo a los que se habían sentado a comer.
Igualmente les fue dando de los pescados todo lo que quisieron. Después de que todos se saciaron, dijo a sus discípulos:

Entonces la gente, al ver el signo que Jesús había hecho, decía: “Éste es, en verdad, el profeta que habría de venir al mundo”.
Pero Jesús, sabiendo que iban a llevárselo para proclamarlo rey, se retiró de nuevo a la montaña, él solo.
