Club History There are historical records of a Bank of England Cricket Club (BOECC) dating back to 1867, but fixtures were infrequent and the club loosely formalised. The modern founding of the club occurred in 1908 with the formation of the Bank of England Sports Club in Roehampton, South West London. The club played friendly cricket from 1908 through to 1970, with the superb facilities attracting fine opposition from both near and far. Four Saturday teams and multiple Sunday sides were fielded, with club records being set that still stand to this day; B.A Smith’s 145 wickets in 1942, Peter Feldwick’s 10-46 in 1946, Ralph Smith’s 193 not out in 1947, plus John Hopwood’s 2055 runs in 1948. Our league adventures began in 1971 with the formation of the Surrey Cricketers League, and the addition of a 2 nd XI league in 1972. We did not win any silverware but were fundamental to the continued organisation of the league, with our own Barry Hoffmann eventually becoming its Chairman. In 1987 the Surrey Cricketers League merged with the Surrey Championship (originally formed in 1968), which is where we have played ever since. Playing availability was excellent throughout this period, and for several years the club were able to field five Saturday teams. This helped the 1st XI to our first promotion from Division 2 in 1989, as we took a seat at the top table of Surrey cricket for the first time. The feat was repeated in 1993, this time unbeaten, eventually leading to our highest ever finish of 4 th in Division 1 in 1999. At the time this made us the fourth best team in all of Surrey – not bad for a bunch of bankers! It also earned qualification for the first ever season of the newly formed Premier League in 2000. This proved to be a short-lived experience as relegation swiftly followed, but in 2001 we were again promoted for another crack at the Premier League in 2002. Again, relegation beckoned, and this remains our last season in the top division to date. A period of rebuilding followed as we yo-yoed between the divisions, mostly downwards, and by 2009 were in Division 3. The success of the junior section helped stabilise the club hereafter, and in 2015 took a step back in the right direction with promotion into Division 2, where we have remained since. Curiously, despite five promotion campaigns the club is yet to win a 1 st XI league title. Fortunately, the same cannot be said for our other sides, with the 2nd XI winning Division 1 in 2002 (plus two other promotion seasons), and the 3rd XI also winning their respective Division 2 in 1990. The Midweek XI has found success by winning the London Banks Cup in 1990 and 1994, whilst in recent years the Public Services T20 Tournament has been claimed on six different occasions, most recently in 2019. As a club we are not all about winning, with a fine tradition of socialising on numerous club tours, including major trips abroad to Barbados (1982), Australia (1988), New Zealand (1993) and South Africa (2003). An annual tour to Sussex ran for almost 60 years between 1921-1979, and to this day we still arrange annual trips to Kent (since 1923) and Buckinghamshire (since 1986). Club Captain’s Message rather re-recruitment from 2019, has been excellent over the winter so I have high hopes. The 2nd XI will be led by Aaron Crane in Surrey Championship 2nd XI Division 2, with largely a new squad of players at his disposal. It will be exciting to see how our newcomers get on, alongside those promoted from the lower teams. The really big news in the club is with the 3rd XI, as Yahya Soofi leads the team in Surrey Championship Regional Division 6 East. This marks the first proper season of 3s league cricket since 1996, and over time it will really help to bridge the gap between 2nd XI and 3rd XI cricket. Given it is a new adventure for us who knows what will happen, but why not dream of promotion?! The 4th XI under Mark Streather will again be looking to have fun playing friendly cricket, whilst bidding to retain the BOECC Fuller Cup. Given the changes in our circumstances regarding Club Captain venues, Saturday Fixtures Secretary Mike Broughton has done Saugata Sen a fantastic job in finding so many new oppositions and grounds for us to visit. On Sundays players from across the club join together to play traditional friendly cricket, mostly at home, I am delighted to have been elected as Bank of England Club and Sunday Fixtures Secretary Brian Milligan has once again put Captain for the 2021 season. Junior Chairman’s Message The u10 (Year 5) age group sees the introduction of the hard cricket ball, with numbers increasing to either 8 or 10 per team. The cup competitions also begin at this age group, so our young players can enjoy the added excitement of knock out play. The u11s (Year 6) also play with the same rules. At u12 (Year 7) it becomes proper “out when you’re out” cricket with the full 11 players per side. I’d like to say this is the format that will serve them well for the rest of their cricketing careers, but who knows what inventions will be around the corner?! At the u13 (Year 8) and u14 (Year 9) age groups players continue their development. We begin to look at identifying individuals who are ready to also play senior cricket through our player pathway, with our Saturday 4th XI and Sunday XI both ideal starting points. Both sides play friendly cricket, which helps to Junior Chairman ensure our youngsters can adjust and learn about the game in Barry Brown a pressure free setting.
