3 The legacy of a people’s library Eleanor London passed away in 2017, 51 years after she oversaw the opening on the Côte Saint- Luc Public Library. Many residents wrote to us with their fond memories of Eleanor London and her efforts to always offer the best in what came to be known as a people’s library and the jewel of our fair city. From its humble beginnings on the second floor of the Côte Saint-Luc Shopping Centre to its current location in the Bernard Lang Civic Centre, the library has never ceased to grow and to change both with the times and its residents. In 2018, we are looking forward to opening the library’s Creative Space, which will house a 3D printer, maker materials, and will inspire those of all ages to create and uncover hidden talents. Children are invited to take part in the Code Club and to learn basic coding skills using Scratch and create their own computer games. Teens and adults will be able to borrow iPads in the li- brary and take advantage of its many digital offerings: Hoopla to download movies and music, RB Digital and PressReader to download magazines and newspapers, Mango to learn languages, Consumer Reports to read vetted reviews. Access to all this technology is available for free with your library card. But technology isn’t what makes our library special. The library lives and thrives through the people who use it. From our community-led clubs, to our educational lectures, to our concerts and art gallery and much, much more, there is something for everyone and everyone is welcome at the library. After all this time, Eleanor London’s legacy of a people’s library lives on.
