Jacqueline writes……. Reflections from the Curatage Autumn is without question, my favourite season. I love the changing colours, the crisp mornings and the smell of wood smoke from chimneys as people light fires and woodburners. The abundance of fruit and vegetables to be harvested and enjoyed brings back childhood memories of crumbles with custard. There is a hymn my daughters sing at school called “Autumn Days” which lists natural gifts, such as “Scent of gardens when the rain’s been falling, And a minnow darting down a stream”. There is so much to behold and appreciate about this time of year! During this strange year of a pandemic, lockdowns and other day to day restrictions on our lives, I am certain we have all experienced times of frustration about what we have been unable to do, rather than make the most of opportunities which have been presented to us. Having moved into our new home at the end of July, I have since reflected on the warm and loving welcome we were given and how we have been so quickly accepted into the South Cheltenham Churches as a family. The delay of ordination has actually meant that we can adjust and acclimatise to our new way of life, and given us extra time to settle in and resolve any difficulties, such as school places. The challenges of Covid-19 have, I think, ended up making people more grateful for the God-given things in life which we can often overlook - our beautiful surroundings, the glorious summer weather and the chance to slow down, take a step back from the hustle and bustle and prioritise what is really important to each of us. As the chorus of the hymn goes “So I mustn’t forget, To say a great big thank you,”. Revd. Jacqueline Henson Gary writes……… Ordained as Deacon On Saturday 19th September 2020 at approx 10:44am Jacqueline Henson was ordained as a deacon in the Church of God. It was a privilege to be present at this life changing and transforming moment for her, and we are blessed to have her and her family with us as she begins her ministry as a Rev! 4
But what does a deacon actually do? There’s lots of mention and instruction regarding deacons in the Bible, I like this one the most: “Deacons are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain.” (1 Tim 3:8) You will see Jacqueline leading on parts of the liturgy during our Sunday services, including the invitation to confession, reading of the gospel, inviting us to exchange Christ’s peace (in a Covid-compliant way of course), proclaiming the mystery of faith in the Eucharistic Prayer, and then dismissing us at the end. She will also preach, intercede and set the altar for Holy Communion as well as distribute the sacrament. But that’s all ‘in church’ for a couple of hours a week, what about the rest of the time? Well, having a collar will change how people see her. It represents an obedience to God’s call on her life and a commitment to ‘being sent’ (here to South Cheltenham for now); it represents the authority given to her by the Bishop to share in the cure of souls of the people in our parishes; it gives an integrity to her calling, and it reminds us that she has been anointed and appointed by the Holy Spirit to walk alongside others and represent Christ in the world. No pressure then! In addition, the Ordinal (that which contains what deacons, priests and bishops are called to do) says the following: Deacons are called to work with the Bishop and the priests with whom they serve as heralds of Christ’s kingdom. They are to proclaim the gospel in word and deed, as agents of God’s purposes of love. They are to serve the community in which they are set, bringing to the Church the needs and hopes of all the people. They are to work with their fellow members in searching out the poor and weak, the sick and lonely and those who are oppressed and powerless, reaching into the forgotten corners of the world that the love of God may be made visible. Deacons share in the pastoral ministry of the Church and in leading God’s people in worship. They preach the word and bring the needs of the world before the Church in intercession. They accompany those searching for faith and bring them to baptism. They assist in administering the sacraments; they distribute communion and minister to the sick and housebound. 5
Deacons are to seek nourishment from the Scriptures; they are to study them with God’s people that the whole Church may be equipped to live out the gospel in the world. They are to be faithful in prayer, expectant and watchful for the signs of God’s presence, as he reveals his kingdom among us. This charge is a timely reminder to all those who have been ordained, reminding us that above all we are deacons first and foremost. We are to reach into the forgotten corners of the world, to seek out the lost and oppressed, and not give up! I am sure you will join me in wishing Jacqueline every blessing in her ministry and the journey that God has already planned out for her. Revd Gary Revd. Jacqueline Henson and family, together with Revd, Gary Grady and Bishops Rachel and Robert at Gloucester Cathedral.
It was not just Jacqueline’s ordination that gave us cause for celebration. It was also the fourth anniversary of Gary’s licencing as vicar of St Peter’s. So it was flowers, wine and chocolate all round that weekend! If it wasn’t for Covid we would, no doubt, have had one of our superb lunches in the Cottages garden. LINK to HOPE - SHOEBOX APPEAL 2020 (Sunday 6th September to Sunday 1st November) This year LINK to HOPE is again running its Christmas ShoeBox Appeal, and St Peter’s is again giving you the chance to take part in extending the hand of fellowship to some of the poorest communities in Eastern Europe. LINK to HOPE is a British Christian registered charity (charity no. 1069722), established in 1991 in the wake of the collapse of the Soviet bloc. It works to rebuild lives and communities in Eastern Europe, largely through educational and social programmes. But every year it also runs a Shoebox Appeal to provide small, but much appreciated, gifts to some of the most impoverished people in Europe. Since its inception it has delivered over 900,000 boxes to various destinations throughout Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova, and Ukraine. This is your chance to contribute to this year’s effort. What you need to do to take part: 1. Get hold of a Shoebox Appeal 2020 Leaflet (you will need one for each shoebox you intend to donate), either: From the back of church (from 6th September onwards), or From Steve Whittingham (who will deliver to your door) – contact details below, or Download one from the Link to Hope website at www.linktohope.co.uk 2. Decide whether you’re going to donate a Family Shoebox or an Elderly Shoebox. FAMILY SHOEBOX: The Family Shoeboxes are given to families who often have to make a choice between buying food or fuel at Christmas time – buying presents is just not a priority. Many of 7
these families do not have running water, heating or electricity. Some live in appalling conditions, often living in just one or two rooms, and life for them is a real struggle to survive. A shoebox for a family means that everyone receives a gift: a scarf for the mum, a tape measure for the dad, toys and games for the children as well as stationery and coloured pens; also toiletries, toothpaste, shampoo and soap; and of course sweets and chocolates for everyone. ELDERLY SHOEBOX: Elderly Shoeboxes are destined for the increasing number of elderly people that are now being left alone due to their families leaving to work away. The boxes are similar to the Family Shoebox, but the children’s games and education materials are replaced with things like a wind-up torch, sensory items, candle and holder etc. 3. Obtain a shoebox (perhaps you’ve got one or two lying around, or you can get one from a local shoe shop; or contact Steve Whittingham if you’re really stuck for getting hold of one). 4. Fill the shoebox with gifts: the Appeal leaflet gives detailed instructions on what sort of things to include (and some things to steer clear of!). 5. Wrap your box (again, instructions for appropriate wrapping are on the leaflet), and attach the leaflet, along with coins to the value of £3 (purely to cover some of LINK to HOPE’s delivery costs). 6. Finally… get your shoebox to Steve Whittingham (for forwarding to LINK to HOPE) by Sunday 1st November at the latest. Either, Bring your completed boxes to church for collection after the main Sunday service (from Sunday 6th September to Sunday 1st November inclusive); or Contact Steve Whittingham to arrange for your box(es) to be picked up from your doorstep (by Sunday 1st November at the very latest). It’s a very straightforward (and rewarding) process. Much fuller details of the work and ethos of LINK to HOPE are available on their website at www.linktohope.co.uk, which also has a FAQs section on the Shoebox Appeal. Or, contact Steve Whittingham (mob 07514 986386; or email steve_whittingham@btinternet.com) 8
INFORMATION In October the church will now be open for Quiet Prayer from 11.00 to 12.00 on a Wednesday. This will replace the Tuesday and Saturday sessions. Daily Hope The C of E have launched a new free national phone line for those unable to join on-line services; it is a 24 hour number and will enable callers to listen into prayer and worship. The number is 0800 804 8044. Please do share this with any friends or neighbours who might benefit. If you need help or know someone who does, then please contact: revgarygrady@btinternet.com or use the Community Support Hub: www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/helphub #GlosCommunity or call: 01452 583519 (Monday to Friday, 8.30am until 5.00pm) Come and Hear the Music Festival – Postponed With great regret, we have taken the decision to postpone this year’s music festival, due to take place at St. Peter’s on Saturday 10th October. Whilst every precaution necessary has been taken, and the church is a safe place for music, the growing number of COVID-19 infections is of concern and we feel it is not the right time to hold it. I do hope we can reschedule for some point in 2021 and would like to thank Simon, Maggie, Tabitha and Helen Divett for all of their hard work this year. Revd Gary 10

This is administered through the Diocese of Gloucester, so every penny comes back to St. Peter’s and is gift-aided also. This provides the church with a regular income and a means with which to plan ahead. It is especially important in ‘times like these’ when services, bookings and income are reduced. For further information, email Peter Marlow: peter.marlow@softcopy.co.uk or check the Stewardship page of the church website: www.stpetersleck.org. You can now enrol in the Parish Giving Scheme by phoning 0333 002 1271 to set up a regular donation. All you need is your bank account details and our parish code LKPT. While the Church is closed you can also support St. Peter’s by making an online donation at: https://cafdonate.cafonline.org/7930.

You are invited to our Festival of Everyday Faith A message from Bishop Rachel and Bishop Robert We are sending this message to encourage you and those in your worshipping communities to sign up for the Zoom Festival of Everyday Faith on Saturday October 3rd It is for Christians of all ages across the Diocese to come together to explore how we live out our following of Jesus Christ in our everyday lives, recognising that we are each different and inhabit different contexts and stories. In 2016 one of the things which emerged from conversation and prayer across our communities, was the need and desire to live out our faith more confidently every day of the week amid the expected and unexpected, the work and the play, the fun and the struggle, the joy and the pain, the exciting and the mundane etc. At present the places where we spend our lives Sunday through to Saturday are more limited than they used to be, and the activity of the week is looking rather different from last year, so for many people the question about what it means to follow Christ in daily life have continued to grow. - 25 -
The good news is that we are all part of the body of Christ - we each have different gifts and carry different stories - so let's come and learn from one another. There is something for everybody in the day and it is our hope that you will come and be part of it. It is designed so that you can dip in and out, although we do hope that you will be part of the opening workshop at 9.30am and the last gathering at 4.30pm which is a simple commissioning of ‘sending out’ at the end of the day. All the details of the Festival of Everyday Faith can be found here. While we are all trying to stop a nasty virus spreading we hope that you won't hold back in spreading the good news about this festival! We look forward to seeing you there .. Leckhampton Local History Society In any normal year, Autumn would mark the start of the LLHS programme of meetings and talks. But this year has been anything but normal and we do not at present know when we will be able to start meetings again, or in what form. However, it is not all bad news: we have taken the opportunity to finish and publish our latest Research Bulletin – the first for a decade. The subjects treated include Leckhampton’s stone legacy, nefarious goings-on in the Sixteenth Century, a historic overview of the Kidnappers Lane market gardens, extracts from a 1950s WI history of wildflowers on the Hill, two fascinating personal accounts of growing up in Leckhampton in the mid- twentieth century, and insights from old postcards and their cryptic messages.
