Page 2 T h e T a t t l e r From the mouths of babes While I sat in the reception area of my doctor's office, a woman rolled an elderly man in a wheelchair into the room. As she went to the recep- tionist's desk, the man sat there, alone and silent. Just as I was thinking I should make small talk with him, a little boy slipped off his mother's lap and walked over to the wheelchair. Placing his hand on the man's, he said, 'I know how you feel. My mom makes me ride in the stroller too'. Page 6 T h e T a t t l e r This witty poem about Covid-19 is by Jan Beaumont I’m normally a social girl I love to meet my mates But lately with the virus here We can’t go out the gates. You see, we are the ‘oldies’ now We need to stay inside If they haven’t seen us for a while They’ll think we’ve upped and died. They’ll never know the things we did Before we got this old There wasn’t any Facebook So not everything was told. We may seem sweet old ladies Who would never be uncouth But we grew up in the 60s – If you only knew the truth! There was sex and drugs and rock ‘n roll The pill and miniskirts We smoked, we drank, we partied And were quite outrageous flirts. Then we settled down, got married And turned into someone’s mum, Somebody’s wife, then nana, Who on earth did we become? We didn’t mind the change of pace Because our lives were full But to bury us before we’re dead Is like red rag to a bull! So here you find me stuck inside For 4 weeks, maybe more I finally found myself again Then I had to close the door! It didn’t really bother me I’d while away the hour I’d bake for all the family But I’ve got no bloody flour! Now Netflix is just wonderful I like a gutsy thriller
Dec/Jan 2021 Page 7 I’m swooning over Idris Or some random sexy killer. At least I’ve got a stash of booze For when I’m being idle There’s wine and whiskey, even gin If I’m feeling suicidal! So let’s all drink to lockdown To recovery and health And hope this bloody virus Doesn’t decimate our wealth. We’ll all get through the crisis And be back to join our mates Just hoping I’m not far too wide To fit through the flaming gates! General Maintenance: We’d like to build up a register of people who are willing to attend to odd jobs around the club. Are you a woodworker, plumber, mechanic, etc? Let us know your skills, how we can best reach you, and when you are available. We’ll add you to our register to call on as required. Just 1 response to this request thanks to Colin Rae remember people many hands make light work. Veterans Support: Are you interested in being part of a group who visits members who are not well or who need some assistance. Please leave your name at the bar or office for Wendy. Papanui RSA Executive Monthly Meetings All Executive meetings are open to financial members to attend and raise matters of concern to them. It is your opportunity to question the Executive about any concerns you may have regarding your club and we are always receptive to new ideas you may have about the club’s future. The meetings are held on the second Monday of the month from February through to December at 5.00pm.
Page 8 T h e T a t t l e r Hello there. Yesterday, Sunday 8th November the Ride of Respect took place and began from your beautiful premises. There was a presentation of a $25.000 cheque to a gentleman from Burnham Military Camp and a number of photos taken including the small group of motorcyclists, all 9 of us who braved the wet weather to participate in the fundraising event. I would be ever so grateful if you could please send me the collection of photos taken by a lady who I believe was member of your staff yesterday morning. I would love to see them. I appreciate your time. Thank you for the amazing job you do. Angela Fridd

Dec/Jan 2021 Page 11 Article provided by Frank Newsome Humble origins for Papanui RSA. The first meeting of members of the Papanui RSA was held in a garage at the back of a butcher shop. Members held committee meetings in the Me- morial Hall built by the Papanui community in memory of those who gave their lives in World War 1. Property was bought on the corner of Main North Road and Langdons Road in 1923. This land was part of a farm owned by the Lees family going back to where Papanui High School now sits. Later it became the site of Lees contracting yard. To build the hall Festivals were held, a Queens Carnival were held and the winner was a Bonnie Kruse. A quartermaster’s store, office block, and hospital units from the Wester- field Army Camp in mid Canterbury were bought and placed on the site. It was not until 1946, and the return of soldiers from World War 2 that the buildings were properly refurbished. The improved premises opened in 1948 as a memorial to lost comrades from Papanui who gave their lives in the war. The hall had a billiards room with three tables, a social room, and a dance hall. An inscription above the entrance read “Lest we Forget”. There was an active Women’s Section in the Club at Langdons Road. 1992 the property was sold and the building demolished to make way for the new “Trust Bank” building, which is now Westpac. The main reason for the shift was to enable the club to be chartered and to obtain a licence. Though Langdons Road was a great site parking was a drawback on the main road.

Page 24 T h e T a t t l e r Transcription of "A Soldier's Silent Night": ‘Twas the night before Christmas, he lived all alone, In a one-bedroom house made of plaster and stone. I had come down the chimney, with presents to give and to see just who in this dwelling did live. As I looked all around, a strange sight to see, no tinsel, no presents, not even a tree. No stocking on the mantle, just boots filled with sand. On the wall hung pictures of far distant lands. Medals and badges, awards of every kind, a sobering thought came alive in my mind. This house was different, it was dark, it was dreary. I had found the home of a soldier, I could see that most clearly. The soldier lay sleeping silent, alone. Curled up on the floor in his one-bedroom home. His face was so gentle, room in such disorder, Not at all how I pictured a U.S. soldier. Was this the hero, of whom I’d just read? Curled up on a poncho, a floor for a bed? Then I realized the other families that I saw this night Out there lies the soldiers who are willing to fight. In the morning around the world, children would play Grown-ups would celebrate a bright Christmas day But they all enjoyed freedom, each month through the year, because of soldiers like the one lying here. I couldn’t help but wonder how many lay alone, on a cold Christmas Eve, in lands far from home. The very thought brought a tear to my eye. and I dropped to my knees and I started to cry. The soldier awakened, I heard his rough voice, “Santa, don’t cry, this life is my choice I fight for freedom, I don’t ask for more. My life is my God, my country, my Corps.” The soldier rolled over, and drifted to sleep, I couldn’t control it, and I continued to weep. I kept watch for hours, so silent and still. as both of us shivered from the cold night’s chill. I didn’t want to leave him on that cold, dark night. This guardian of honor, so willing to fight.
Dec/Jan 2021 Page 25 Then the soldier rolled over with a voice soft and pure. He whispered, “Carry on Santa, it’s Christmas Day, all secure.” One look at my watch and I knew he was right, Merry Christmas my friend, May God bless you this night. Little Johnny comes home from Sunday school with a black eye. His fa- ther sees it and says, "Johnny, how many times do I have to tell you not to fight with the other boys?" "But Dad, it wasn't my fault. We were all in church saying our prayers. We all stood up and my teacher in front of me had her dress in the crack of her butt. I reached over and pulled it out. That's when she hit me!" "Johnny," the father said. "You don't do those kind of things to women." Sure enough, the very next Sunday Johnny came home with the other eye black and blue. Johnny's father said, "Johnny, I thought we had a talk!" "But Dad," Johnny said, "It wasn't my fault. There we were in church saying our prayers. We all stood up and my teacher in front of us had her dress in the crack of her butt. Then Louie who was sitting next to me saw it and he reached over and pulled it out. Now I know she doesn't like this, so I pushed it back in!"
