Presidents Report Hello, all members and sponsors, it certainly has been a while since our last newsletter. The Waikato Hunting & Fishing /Westcoast Plumbing & Gas, 8 day Mixed Classic fishing tournament was a highly successful fishing competition. Thanks again to the great support from sponsors and the club members who took part. (Results in this Newsletter) Easter Saturday kids on the wharf went well with 45-50 children and parents taking part, Raglan Wharf Fish shop sponsoring, ice blocks and bait for those that participated, with R.S.F C. donating $500 worth of prizes and starter pack goodies. Thanks to all those helpers on the day. There have certainly been a lot of issues to deal with lately that impact on all members ability to get out fishing safely, and to enjoy the opportunity to relax and catch a nice bag of quality fish with the knowledge their fishery is in good health at present, October SNA8 review to be announced. W.D.C. & R.C.B issues R.S.F.C as a major contributor to the success of Raglans Boating Facilities over the years continues to be ignored by the W.D.C and Raglan Community board. Discussions, plans and objectives that impact on all issues associated with boating are very rarely bought to the club’s attention. We constantly have to approach and ask for information about said action taking place. Sadly, said actions take years to rectify (Manu Bay break-wall) the various councils’ costly failures. Some actions can’t be turned around however, as in the decision to put retail operators at the wharf creating parking issues and traffic congestion. To our numerous future concerns, being the planned concrete foot path in front of trailer parks at Papahuea Boat Ramp, the long-term planned monetary charges for users at all boat ramps in Raglan, without our input thru the reserves committee. Shit happens and then we have battle to fix it to be fair for all. Manu Bay Break-wall An independent Engineers report was received by council on the 3rd of May, but as of the 1st of June has not been passed on to the stakeholders. All boaties using Manu Bay boat ramp know that the present structure does not work as it should. The Raglan Sport Fishing Clubs only involvement was at the town hall meeting pre-build, when we were clearly promised the new break-wall would be the same if not better than the one the councils removed! We can only hope that the third phase of mediation takes place now as promised, and sufficient capping occurs giving us a structure that once again works. SNA8 – Snapper Sustainable Review It has been 40 years since commercial trawling collapsed our fishery to 5% of the original biomass and devastated the Maui dolphin population as a result. Currently we have a fishery at 54% of its original biomass, which is great news, except commercial interests want to wreak havoc on our eco system again, now the fishery has recovered. Commercial interests also want to restrain recreational catch by decreasing bag limits for snapper and increasing legal size. We are in a battle to convince the Fishery’s Minister (David Parker) to hold the current TAC (Total Allowable Catch) numbers at
current levels, at least until proper science is done on the fishery and the effects of the Maui Dolphin trawl bans which have turned this fishery around after 20 years. The science needs to be done on the effects of the one nautical mile trawl ban implemented in 2000, the two nautical mile trawl ban implemented in 2010, and the latest four nautical mile trawl ban implemented in 2020, and how our fishery and associated Juvenile habitat has recovered. Since the three different trawl bans stopped the constant inshore trawling ,especially destructive bottom trawling, of SNA8, a fishery that is dominated by 95 % of its snapper being bred in the Kaipara Harbour. To be blunt, the minister of fisheries advisers believes two recruitments years (2014/2016) have turned this fishery around (Recruitment = spawning snapper survival). We will be flooding members with information come submission time, as we firmly believe this NOT to be the case. Hence the request to stake holders for proper science to be done before any change to the TAC are made. Again, our public apology to all anglers who missed out on recognition of their catches in the 8 day Mixed Classic point results, because of a wrong formula in the calculations being used to accumulate the points scores. We the committee have been endeavoring to have zero fish recording mistakes this season forward, so we are extremely disappointed with our mistake. Finally, a big thanks to our members and sponsors alike who support the committee and realize that running a fishing club of 500 plus members is not just catching fish and enjoying the day, if only it was that easy. Ken Barry President

The 2023 calendar is taking a break from fishy photos to make way for boat photos. Boats of the RSFC will be the theme and these will need to be Landscape (given the shape of boats) and don’t forget, the bigger the file size the greater the resolution and suitability for the calendar. Action photos usually look better, when the boat is underway or has some white water around etc. When the calendar shots are decided, we’ll gather details of the boat; make, power plant, skipper, etc. So, get your mates to start snapping photos of your boat at sea and start sending them in any time. And in 2024 we’ll go back to people/fish photos.

Kids Fishing on the Wharf Proudly Sponsored by There was a great turn out at the Raglan wharf on Saturday of Easter Weekend, with perfect weather conditions. The local wharf fishermen were very accommodating making space for all our anglers and families. The competition was open to non-members and Raglan Fish kindly supplied bait and ice blocks for the children. There was a steady number of sprats, yellow mackerel, piper and snapper being weighed, with the children being encouraged to use a wet towel for healthy releasing. There was lots of fun had by all including some very supportive fathers. The club would like to thank everyone that helped out. And the winners were… 1st Place – Charlotte Petrie 2nd Place – Jai Cooper 3rd Place – Isla Richards 4th Place – Mea Davies
