THE LONDON SCOTTISH LEGENDS DINNER THE HURLINGHAM CLUB THURSDAY 16TH MAY 2019 Event Sponsored by: Charity Partner:
PAUL BURNELL A WARM WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT OF LONDON SCOTTISH Tonight’s Legends Dinner promises to be a very special evening, bringing the London Scottish community together to celebrate all that’s been achieved across the Club this season and to honour some truly great London Scots as we induct them into the Club’s Hall of Fame. That our award winners include both great champions of our Club and Scottish Internationals and British & Irish Lions speaks volumes for the calibre of player involved in representing London Scottish over more than 140 years. Season 2018/19 was a challenging one for our professional game. Loyal supporters at matches during the year will have experienced the full range of emotions – from euphoria at unexpected wins to misery at unexpected losses and every celebration and frustration in between. But just when it mattered most, our 1st XV pulled off that vital win against Cornish Pirates to fully secure next season’s place in the Greene King IPA Championship. Our Senior Men’s amateur rugby and our Minis, Junior, Colts and Girls sections all flourished this season, led by a group of outstanding volunteers. We celebrated league wins both for the London Scottish Lions in their debut season and for the Under 17s Colts. Our U18 Girls performed out of their skins to reach the Cup Final at Reading. And in an inspiring season highlight, led by Lions captain Fraser Lyle, our Sevens squad won the coveted Ladies Cup at the prestigious Melrose Sevens tournament, our first victory since 1965. These are stunning achievements, epitomising the spirit of One Club for which we owe a special debt of gratitude to Director of Rugby, Dave Morris. A heartfelt thank you to all our many members, supporters, investors, sponsors, players, staff, volunteers, guests and friends who have given incalculable and continued support right across London Scottish FC again this year, as well as a specific vthank you to Carbon Financial, generous sponsors of tonight’s event for the second year. Please enjoy your evening! And if you can, I would encourage you to join in with our live and silent auctions on behalf of the Club and our charity partner, My Names’5 Doddie Foundation, who we are proud and delighted to welcome and support this evening. Best wishes Paul Burnell President, London Scottish 03 2019 Legends Dinner

FUNDRAISING London Scottish stages two major fundraising events each year where we raise funds for the Club as well as our nominated charity partner. The Live and Silent auctions at these events represent a significant part of our income. All monies raised go towards sustaining and developing the sport of rugby within the Club, from professional rugby in the RFU Championship, through senior men’s amateur rugby, colts, girls, junior and minis rugby, as well as our community engagement programme. We are delighted our partner for this year’s Legends Dinner is My Name’5 Doddie Foundation (MNDF), an exceptional charity which we also supported through fundraising at the 2017 St Andrew’s Day Lunch, and again at last year’s Legends Dinner along with Cure Parkinson’s. MNDF was set up in November 2017 by former Scotland International Doddie Weir and his trustees a few months after Doddie himself was diagnosed as suffering from Motor Neurone Disease. The Foundation works tirelessly to raise funds for research into finding potential cures for this devastating disease. Doddie is one of the most recognisable faces in world rugby, playing in championship-winning teams in both Scotland and England, as well as winning 61 caps for Scotland. He was selected for the success- ful 1997 British and Irish Lions tour to South Africa. London Scottish 2019 Hall of Fame inductee Rob Wainwright toured with Doddie in South Africa. “Since we launched the Foundation in November 2017, we have been able to commit more than £2 million to vital MND research and over £350,000 to help families live with this terrible disease. This is only possible thanks to the amazing support we receive from people like you who are going the extra mile to get behind our cause. Thank you for your support and I hope you all have a tremendous night celebrating rugby, friendship and the Club: London Scottish.” Jill Douglas, CEO, My Name’s Doddie Foundation. All the auction items in tonight’s Live and Silent auctions are being presented together with net proceeds going to the organisation entering the item for auction. 07 2019 Legends Dinner

He is also an ambassador for Prostate Cancer UK and Movember and has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for men to go for THAT check… WILLIE ALLAN MBE Tonight’s auctioneer Willie Allan was born in the Scottish capital and brought up in Dunfermline in the Kingdom of Fife. After school he went on to become a Physical Education teacher for thirty - two years including twenty - two years as Principal Teacher of Physical Education at Buckhaven High School in Fife. Willie started after-dinner speaking in 1992 and often chairs evenings or acts as a master of ceremonies or principal speaker. The Herald described him as “probably the best after dinner speaker in Scotland.” Tonight he will lead the Live Auction and he will be sure to have plenty of material to encourage you all to bid for the luxurious lots on offer. He will also offer helpful advice on the Silent Auction. A keen sportsman, Willie describes himself as a ‘non-tackling stand-off’ who played for Dunfermline Rugby Club and was selected to represent North and Midlands. A serious knee injury brought his playing career to a close and he then focused on coaching. Whilst at Buckhaven High School, he led a big revival in sports teaching, including the reintroduction of rugby at the school with the formation of the Buckhaven Sharks and Sharkettes. Willie also describes himself as “a committed but totally useless golfer”. Willie is an ambassador for Skillforce, a charity that works with young people to help reach their potential, and is a Trustee of The Shoot Charitable Trust. In 2017 he was awarded an MBE for services to Youth Rugby and Charity. 2019 Legends Dinner 08

HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES Robin Marshall Robin earns his legendary status to London Scottish, both from his playing days as a back row forward and sevens supremo and his return in the 1990s as President of the club. Robin’s playing days at London Scottish were in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He was an excellent back rower, at a time when the club had real strength in that position, and a very good leader. The latter was evident in the impressive results during his time as club captain in 1961/62 and 1962/63. Robin’s greatest fame as a player however is indelibly linked with the outstanding London Scottish Sevens of the time. London Scottish won the prestigious Middlesex Sevens at Twickenham four successive times in the early 60s, five times in six seasons and lost the final by a whisker in the other. Robin played in, and captained, the team in the first three of these finals – often the only uncapped player in a team of famed London Scots including Thomson, Shackleton, Laughland and Rodd. Their style of play, based on maintaining possession and then making lightning scoring strikes, revolutionised the Sevens game. Robin also captained the London Scottish team to its first ever win at the Melrose 7s in 1962. HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES Billy Steele Billy was born in the South of Scotland and grew up playing for his hometown side Langholm, then a top level club. Billy then joined the RAF as a training instructor and most of his subsequent club rugby was for the RAF or close to his RAF base. Billy was first capped on the right wing in 1969 and won the last of his 23 caps at Twickenham in 1977. Included within this roll of honour was being part of the ‘Wham-Bam’ Scotland side that beat England twice in one week in 1971 ! A career highlight was selection for the unbeaten British and Irish Lions tour to South Africa in 1974 with the likes of Ian McGeechan, Andy Irvine, Mighty Mouse McLauchlan and Willie John McBride where he started in the first two tests, both games were won. As with Rob Wainwright, Billy played for London Scottish when his RAF commitments allowed. However arguably the longest-lasting rugby achievement of Billy’s career was the fact that he was behind ‘Flower of Scotland’ becoming a national anthem for Scotland and a statement of unity in Scottish rugby. On the 1974 Lions tour he taught the squad the song at one of the tour’s team cabaret evenings. From there it caught on with the Scots rugby players, and then the wider Scottish public to the point where the song grew from relative obscurity into the anthem Scotland fans adore signing all over the world at international matches. 2019 Legends Dinner 10
HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES Rob Wainwright Rob was born in Perth, Scotland, attended Trinity College, Glenalmond, and then Cambridge University where he read medicine at Magdalene College. Like fellow Hall of Fame inductee, Simon Amor, he won a rugby blue at Cambridge. Not only that, Rob also won a Blue for boxing. Before his rugby career took off, Rob joined the Army and was part of the Royal Army Medical Corps with a final rank of Major. A back row forward, Rob won his first cap off the bench against Ireland in 1992 and went on to win 37 caps, all bar the first as a starter, and including the 1995 World Cup. His final cap was in 1998. His playing career thus covered the arrival of professional rugby and indeed he became the first Scotland captain in the professional era, captaining the national team 16 times in total. In 1997 he was named on the victorious British and Irish Lions tour to South Africa, earning his test cap in the third test at Ellis Park, Johannesburg, in front of a bumper 62,000 crowd. Rob played for London Scottish through the 1990s as Army and pro rugby commitments allowed. He is now, amongst other responsibilities, a sheep farmer on the Isle of Coll. HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES Simon Amor Simon was educated at Hampton School before further education at St Mary’s University and Cambridge University. He earned his Blue as a scrum half in the 2000 varsity match and went on to graduate in Management Studies. After graduating, Simon signed a professional deal with Gloucester Rugby, was instrumental in their success in the Middlesex Sevens whilst also appearing off the bench in the 2003 Powergen Final where Gloucester beat Northampton Saints. Whilst still at Gloucester, Amor began playing Sevens for England, where he really made his mark as a player in the professional game. He represented England in two Commonwealth Games (2002 and 2006 (silver medal)), was captain of the England Seven which won the Hong Kong Sevens on four consecutive occasions and was named IRB Sevens Player of the Year in 2004. Amor then moved to London Wasps in 2006 and again was a pivotal member in their success at the Middlesex Sevens. He arrived at London Scottish as a part-time player/assistant coach in 2008, was appointed full -time player/head coach in 2010 and Director of Rugby in 2011. With Simon as player/coach, Scottish won National Two in 2009 and National One in 2011. After two successful years in the Championship, and with his boots now hung up, Amor was appointed as Head Coach to England Sevens in 2013 and remains there. He has guided the England Sevens set up to be one of the most feared on the World Rugby Sevens Series circuit. Then in 2016 Amor was the Head Coach of the Team GB 7s side that won a silver medal at the first ever Olympic Games Sevens in Rio, Brazil. 11 2019 Legends Dinner
