HOMESTEAD RUN// By Paul Eager Another stunning Hawke’s Bay day beckoned as we gathered at the Hastings’ Farmer’s Market around 9am, with plenty of club members shopping for breakfast, lunch, or coffee - 32 cars, and almost half of them (15) were English. Rule Britannia, eh! Include a Peugeot and a BMW and it was definitely a European day. We set off shortly after Esther’s 10am briefing over to the Maraekakaho Road, on down SH50, and arrived at Michael On from there, some drivers by the short Wenley’s magnificent old woolshed direct route along SH50 to Gwavas and and stables about 30 minutes later. His grandfather bought the farm in 1930. To our second stop – Gwavas homestead and garden. The long-wooded drive from the road to the homestead was impressive enough by itself! Everybody settled on the expansive lawn for lunch, and afterwards our hostess Phyllida , on behalf also of her husband Stu who was away, give us some of the background to this majestic building. Hers is the fifth generation to live here, after the original family had immigrated from December 2020 / January 2021
Merry Christmas The house was magnificent – full of native timber, with an enormous stained glass window lighting the main staircase and bits of history everywhere. The first house on the farm was built in 1860, then this bigger house in 1890 as a single storey. It had a Cornwall, and apparently owned the first second floor (including a turret) added in Rolls Royce in Hawke’s Bay. The farm had the 1900’s, and then the turret was removed started as 30,000 acres, stretching up to the again in the 1950’s. WEDNESDAY RUN// By Helen Ball Juliette and Harley organised the November mid week run which took us on a very short run to the Eskdale School. One of the young students, Jayden, has organised a show of cars and motorbikes as a fund raiser for their school camp and what a fantastic display it was ranging from vintage and classic cars to muscle cars, mustangs and variety of very impressive motorbikes. The children came down to the field in class order, the new entrants first then the older children. They had a great time sitting in the cars, barely able to see over he dashboard but having the time of their life tooting the horn and pretending to drive. There were plenty of questions, manly about the age of the car or where it was built, and Harley even won a spot prize for his Holden, well done. The bigger prizes went to the Mustang and the Chev Bel Air, as picked by the young organiser and his helpers. It has been some time since we last were involved with the schools so this was an opportunity not to miss. and here’s hoping we can do more of this sort of thing, especially with Deco on the horizon next year. A thoroughly enjoyable day and our thanks to the Cadwallader’s. December 2020 / January 2021

SPARES NEWS// By John Dury Hi All Over the last 3 weeks or so the team at the spare parts have been reducing our stock footprint and with a lot of tidying & restacking we have found a lot more room than we thought we had, so are needing more stock to arrive, this is an ongoing job. When we arrive on Tuesday mornings the first thing we notice is our scrap bin, and over time it slowly seems to go down, it goes down more after an event which is held nearby, we are certainly noticing the drain. The club may need to consider doing away with the scrap bin or invest in our own bin which has a lockable top, this may help our light fingered friends from helping themselves. Don’t forget that if you are cleaning out your Grandads shed or garage think of us as we may be able to help. We have been trying to sell a few things on facebook but have had no success so far on any of these items. Don’t forget we have hubcaps, head caskets, carbs, brake parts, shocks etc etc. This months photo is some of our Tuesday group having a well deserved cuppa, cake & chat. Until next month. CLUB SPARE PARTS CORNER For any enquiries phone Brian Taylor on 027 4436009 or contact the Club’s Spares Dept. on Tuesday mornings between 9am & 11am on 06 835 1483. December 2020 / January 2021
