UPDATE www.aala.us Week of January 15, 2018 IT’S SO HARD TO SAY GOOD-BYE IN THIS ISSUE IT’S SO HARD TO SAY GOOD-BYE MOVING FORWARD SEEKING 23 MORE ANGELS FAQ – TOO MUCH HOLIDAY FEASTING? GOOD NEWS FOR EDUCATION CONGRATULATIONS NEW FOCUS DASHBOARDS ACADEMIC DECATHLON UNIFIED ENROLLMENT AALA SCHOLARSHIP AND COMMUNITY AWARDS APPLICATIONS IN MEMORIAM PHI DELTA KAPPA LECTURE HEAR THE GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATES AT U.S.C. VOLUNTEER TO HELP CHILDREN READ CALENDAR POSITIONS Hope, healing, best wishes, love, prayers, missing you, get better, a full speedy recovery, positive energy, wholeness, comfort, are all mere words that do not begin to express our most sincere and earnest wishes for Superintendent Michelle King as she announces her retirement to focus on her health challenges. AALA joins the chorus of articles and accolades highlighting her precedent-setting appointment; demonstrating the value and importance of lifelong learning by earning a doctoral degree; experiencing a true K-12 public education as a distinguished LAUSD alumna; and most importantly, serving a significant amount of her career as a proud member in good standing of the Associated Administrators of Los Angeles. What no article will ever capture is her magnetic energy, beautiful smile, and charisma when she walked into a room and genuinely greeted every administrator, followed by delivering an uplifting message with a real assessment of the state of the work along with next steps and expectations. AALA thanks Dr. King for her decades of service, dedication, and consistent willingness to listen and learn. Moreover, this is an opportune time to express gratitude and appreciation to Dr. King’s family. For years, her daughters and loved ones have endured her absence at significant family events while she supervised, represented, and served as the face of the Los Angeles Unified School District. As a tribute to her thirty-three years of service to the District, a motion will be presented to the Friends of AALA Board to designate a 2018 scholarship as the Dr. Michelle King award to memorialize in perpetuity her unprecedented and stellar career.
Associated Administrators of Los Angeles MOVING FORWARD On Tuesday, January 9, 2018, the Board of Education named Acting Superintendent Vivian Ekchian as the Interim Superintendent pending the hiring of a replacement for Dr. Michelle King who is retiring in June. Ms. Ekchian, like Dr. King, has risen through the ranks of LAUSD, beginning as an elementary school teacher. AALA has worked closely with Ms. Ekchian, particularly in her roles as Chief Human Resources Officer, Chief Labor Negotiator, and Local District Northwest Superintendent, and is pleased to welcome her to her new position and we look forward to continuing our positive interactions with her. She has always been willing to listen and is collaborative in her decision-making. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said that Ms. Ekchian is a “wise choice” who “will provide the strong leadership and dedication that our young people deserve, and build on the progress that Michelle King delivered in her time leading the District.” As the Board begins its nationwide search for a new Superintendent, we encourage them to look within at the numerous internal administrators who have the depth and breadth of knowledge to ably lead LAUSD. SEEKING AT LEAST 23 MORE ANGELS We now have 127 active AALA members who have joined the ranks of AALA ANGELS by committing to a $5 monthly payroll deduction to support the Friends of AALA scholarship program! We just need 23 more ANGELS for the District to begin the payroll deduction, as 150 is the minimum required to start the program. The holidays may be over, but our LAUSD students still need your help. Your generous $5 tax- deductible donation each month will enable many of them to achieve their educational goals. Please share this information with those at your site as any LAUSD employee can become an ANGEL. Simply CLICK HERE for the enrollment form, complete, and email it to AALA President Juan A. Flecha at juan.flecha@lausd.net or Javier Melendez at jmelendez@aala.us, or fax to the office, 213.484.0201. HEALTH BENEFITS FAQ TOO MUCH FEASTING DURING THE HOLIDAYS? Weight gain is common from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day. We know that we should be eating fewer calories and exercising more, but the problem lies in the actual doing. AALA has mined hundreds of suggestions for losing weight. Maybe one or two ideas will resonate and work for you. To Reduce Calories Skip the high carb white foods. Not only high in calories, they contain empty calories and are highly glycemic, meaning they break down quickly in your stomach and spike blood sugar levels. White foods to avoid include white potatoes, white rice, white sugar (sodas, fruit juices, jams, etc.) 2
Associated Administrators of Los Angeles FAQ (Cont.) and all food products made with white flour (white bread, white flour tortillas, cookies, white bagels, pasta, pretzels, etc.). Do include moderate portions of healthy white foods, such as non- or low-fat cottage cheese, yogurt, unsweetened soy or almond milk, and beans (white beans, chickpeas, and pinto beans). Substitute your higher calorie whole grain breakfast foods with two poached or boiled eggs. Did you know that a large egg has only 75 calories? Two eggs can satisfy your hunger until lunch and they have been proven to not raise one’s cholesterol. Keep fruit handy at work for between meal snacks. Bountiful winter fruits include apples, pears, kiwi, and pomegranates, and easy-to-peel mandarin or clementine oranges, grapefruit, and blood oranges. Eat foods that fill you up with fewer calories. These include vegetables, broth-based soups, whole grain breads, whole grain pasta, and beans, with no added fat. Use a smaller plate. Typical dinner plates are larger than 10 inches in diameter. Research shows that using a 10-inch plate instead of a 12-inch one can cut calories by up to 22% without feeling the need for seconds. However, anything smaller than 9.5 inches had people going for seconds. To Increase Exercising Resume your normal exercise routine at the gym or join a gym. Remember to check out your health plan’s gym discounts or look for promotional offers through websites such as Groupon and LivingSocial. Find a workout you enjoy. Set realistic, short-term goals for yourself, such as increasing the distance you walk from 10 minutes to 15 minutes or gradually increasing your pace so that your intensity level increases from low (50% of your maximum heart rate) to high (60% of your maximum heart rate). Reward yourself when you achieve your goals. Walk more. There are great fitness bands or fitness apps on your smart phone. Set small, achievable goals to increase the number of steps you take, eventually aiming for 10,000 steps a day. Even simple activities help, like walking around while on the phone, parking farther away at the mall, or taking an extra lap or two around the mall when shopping. Do aerobic exercises at home watching free YouTube videos. Search for your favorite exercise type, from yoga and cardio burns to dance and circuit workouts. Home workouts require no travel time, no special workout clothing, and can be done in the privacy of your own home. Resources: Click on How many calories do you need? How much exercise should I get? GOOD NEWS FOR EDUCATION IN THE GOVERNOR’S BUDGET Governor Brown released his proposed 2018-2019 budget on January 10, and it contained good news for education. Because there is a projected increase of $8 billion, the proposed budget provides an additional $4.6 billion to K-14 education. The governor’s priorities for this increase are to fully fund the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF), pay down debts owed to schools, and provide more support for low- achieving students. More than 40% of the General Fund will go to K-12 education and almost 12% will go to higher education in the state. Specifically, the budget proposes increases of: $3 billion to LCFF; $1.8 billion for discretionary spending by school districts, charter schools, and county offices of education; 3
Associated Administrators of Los Angeles BUDGET (Cont.) $212 million for K-12 CTE programs administered through the community college Strong Workforce Program; $133.5 million for cost-of-living adjustments in categorical programs outside of LCFF, such as special education, American Indian education centers, and child nutrition; and $135 million to special education. CONGRATULATIONS The Town Crier, Paul Revere Charter Middle School’s student newspaper, has been awarded the Pacemaker Award (unofficially known as the Pulitzer Prize of student journalism), the highest national award for excellence in journalism, by the National Scholastic Press Association for the second year in a row. Revere was the only middle school among the 26 schools to receive the honor and it has been in the finals for the award every year since 2012. Congratulations to Thomas Iannucci, Principal, and Eric Wechsler, journalism teacher. Holding issues of the Town Crier in the picture to the left are eighth grade journalists Sasha Schoettler, Cole Herron, Maddie Glenn, and Joey Chae. NEW FOCUS DASHBOARDS AALA thanks Shiva Goudarzi, Office of the CIO, for providing this information. In support of LAUSD’s Strategic Plan, the Information Technology Division is committed to providing a quicker and easier way to access student, school, and district data, maximizing the District’s ability to reach our objectives and achieve success. In the 2016-2017 school year, we introduced MiSiS Ad Hoc Reporting and Dashboards, a web-based reporting application that provides school-site, local district, and central office administrators with subject-specific dashboards, canned reports, and an ad hoc reporting capability using student and school data from MiSiS only. Available now, Focus Reporting & Dashboards (Focus) is a new web-based reporting application that strengthens LAUSD’s reporting capability by integrating major systems used in the District. In addition to MiSiS, Focus will consist of data from other systems used by LAUSD employees, like Welligent, Cafeteria Management System (CMS), and Adult Ed. During the 2017-2018 school year, new data and dashboards will be released periodically. Like MiSiS Ad Hoc Reporting and Dashboards, Focus consists of subject-specific dashboards, canned reports, and an ad hoc reporting capability. However, Focus will also provide a new user experience, with an updated look and feel, as well as improved dashboard and report functionality. 4
Associated Administrators of Los Angeles FOCUS (Cont.) How are MiSiS dashboards and Focus different? While both Focus and MiSiS Ad Hoc Reporting and Dashboards are reporting applications, the data included in each application is different. MiSiS Ad Hoc Reporting and Dashboards provides student data from MiSiS, whereas Focus will provide data from MiSiS as well as other applications used in LAUSD, like Welligent, Cafeteria Fiscal Management, etc. In addition, Focus consists of an updated look and feel, meaning all existing dashboards in MiSiS Ad Hoc Reporting and Dashboards will be organized differently to improve the user experience. It also consists of new functionality in the available dashboards and reports; for example, being able to maximize a graph to full screen. For more information, click here: FAQs page. AALA members are encouraged to attend the town hall as they will have an opportunity to learn the candidates’ positions on education. “In a time of political turmoil, there is no more fitting way to mark Martin Luther King, Jr. Day than to engage in a spirited yet civil discussion of the great issues facing California,” said Robert Shrum, director of the Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics at USC. For more information, email info@EmpowermentCongress.org or call 213.346.3247.
