St. Paul’s Episcopal Church The Epistle June 2022 Love God. Love others. Help others love God. We welcome you to join us on our journey as we strive to share the love of Jesus through worship, Christian education, fellowship and service to each other and the community beyond our walls. From the Desk of Father John As we move into the month of June life seems to take on a different twist as the school year comes to an end, people plan vacations and trips and the pace of church life slows down a bit, but worship and ministry continue as we build the Kingdom of God which is among us and at hand. We take time to refresh and renew with our eyes set on gearing back up in September. It is a time to close some doors and wait with expectation for September, ready and willing to continue to be open to the movement of the Spirit as we begin another cycle of school, church, work, and life with each other in community. As we look forward to the change in pace I wonder if the nation will do the same. Will there be a decrease in violence? Will hatred begin to be overcome with love? Will there be relief in our economy? How will we as Christians continue to live out our Baptismal Covenant and change someone’s life? I think we all agree that we cannot continue as a nation the way life is going. We have the ability to make a difference - one person, one experience, one event at a time. We try to understand what is happening and we constantly look for the presence of God in all events of life. When we look for God, he is found. When we call upon him, he answers, and we feel his presence in every moment of life. Summer allows us to move our thoughts to our programs and evaluate them and see what needs to be changed and where we can improve. It is also a time for you to avail yourselves of the educational and formational opportunities that we offer and how best they will help you to develop and deepen your spirituality. A variety of book studies, scripture studies and discussion groups await your involvement. You are also given time to reflect on how best you will use the gifts of the Spirit to build up the community of St. Paul’s and to make the Kingdom of God a reality by sharing the gifts God has given to you. May summer renew us for the work he has begun is each of us so that it may be brought to completion in His name. Fr. John+ 1

Love God. Love others. Help others love God. This month, I would like to have us think about the stewardship of God’s Creation. Lately, it has been called Creation Care. This ecological movement has been raising our consciousness about our endangered earth. Our God has given us stewardship and management of all creation, and we have littered, polluted, and destroyed it. I believe that Christians need to provide the leadership for a reverence and care of God’s creation. We need to capture the sense of the Hebrew Bible that we must Care for our children’s children by our stewardship of God’s Earth TODAY. We at St. Paul’s have an Environmental Policy which is below: ENVIROMENTAL POLICY St. Paul’s is concerned for the care of God’s creation. For this reason it has adopted an environmental policy for the parish. This policy rises from a vision that St. Paul’s becomes a model Christian environmental community. The Vestry seeks to communicate its policy widely within the parish, inviting members of the parish and those groups who use its buildings to abide by this policy as a matter of Christian stewardship of the environment. Fundamentally we are asking for two things. First, please avoid the use of materials which are harmful to the environment or are wasteful of natural resources (i.e. throw away items and avoid the use of chemical items). Second, recycle everything which is recyclable. Bins are located throughout the building for this purpose. 2
Environmental Policy • We are the Body of Christ, God’s people. We acknowledge that everything in the created order comes from God, including our very lives. As God’s people, we have been entrusted with care of the creation. We seek to be faithful stewards of this responsibility. • The focus of our environmental stewardship will be on the parish as a whole, its individual members, groups which use the parish buildings, and the wider community. • We invite all parish and outside groups which use our buildings to abide by the policy and practices which we adopted. • We invite individual members of the parish to adopt similar policies and practices in their homes. • It is the policy of the parish to, in so far as it is possible, encourage the faithful use of the three R’s (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) in the living out of our stewardship of God’s World. • The Vestry shall appoint an environmental coordinator for the parish. Environmental Action: A Conservation of Natural Resources 1. Reduce • Turn down thermostats when leaving • Turn off lights when rooms are not in use • Turn off air conditioners when leaving • Keep thermostats at 68 degrees when using rooms during the heating season • Be sure all faucets and gas burners are turned off when not in use • Turn the temperature of the water heater up (C) only when using the dishwasher, returning the temperature to 120 degrees (A) at all other times • Leaking faucets, toilets or other fixtures should be reported and repaired as soon as possible 2. Reuse • Reusable cloth rags shall be used in preference to paper towels where practical • The clergy shall encourage wedding parties to rent cloth carpet runners 3. Recycle • Recyclable items include: glass bottles, cardboard boxes, tin cans, plastic containers, newspaper, white paper, colored paper, aluminum cans, foil pie plates, brown paper bags • A recycle bin/box will be placed in every room • The collection point for all these recyclables will be in the alley located in the back of the church building • The recyclables will be taken to the curb on Tuesdays • Recyclable items which are not being picked up at the present time will be accumulated and disposed of as required by volunteers. Thank You for Supporting the Ukraine! Just a note of thanks to all who contributed to the Ukraine Fund. We, at St. Paul’s, collected $2,235.00! Vestry will match this total and send it to Ukraine for their needs. God bless you all for your generosity! Thank you to Jack and Jennifer Westermann for coordinating Trinity Canteen on May 29th and to all who donated. Because of your kind donations of fruit, granola bars, fruit cups, and Pop Tarts, many people were appreciative of the lunch provided. Many thanks to the Christian Ed Staff for its dedication and creativity that they provided all year to our students. Deb Wirag, Nancy Elwood, Grace Ng, Janet Manchester, Zach Manchester, and Anne Coleman for your willingness to teach and to Jennifer Westermann for coordinating the whole show. at St. Paul’s A Note from Our Parish Nurse Summer is here. Covid is our new normal. Please remember with the new variant you may have little to no symptoms. Therefore why our cases are so high with masks off is why we continue with masks for our in person services. Some people are still needing hospitalization. Remember your sunscreen when outdoors especially between 10:00-2:00 when the sun is the strongest. Get a skin exam annually and let your doctor know if you have any new or suspicious spots. But get outside. Enjoy the sunshine, the warmth of the sun and the beauty of the summer. Pray, meditate, and exercise. It is good for the soul and the spirit! Especially with the stress and concerns of the world lately. Jackie Fabiano RN, BSN, Lead Parish Nurse Vestry Meeting The next meeting will be on June 14th at 6:30 p.m. This meeting will be in-person. Feast of Pentecost! Wear Red!!! Sunday, June 5th Sunday, June 5th, is the Feast of Pentecost, informally known as the “Birthday of the Church” as it was the occasion of the descent of the Holy Spirit upon all believers of Jesus Christ - Jews and Gentiles alike. The liturgical color of Pentecost is red, so all are encouraged to wear red to church on Sunday! This year Cassie Manchester will be in charge of the raffle basket table. The raffle baskets are always a big hit and spark interest for both the kids and adults. The baskets can be any theme and need not be expensive. The Dollar Tree is a great place to find baskets, clear gift bags, and things to fill your baskets. As we have done in years past, please give your basket a title that corresponds with the basket theme and place a card that lists the contents of the basket in a visible place. This year’s Ice Cream Social will be on Wednesday August 17th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. You can drop off completed baskets at the church any time before the 17th. You can also bring your basket the day of. If you are interested in creating a raffle basket please let Cassie Manchester know so she can get an approximate number and be able to plan accordingly. Feel free to contact Cassie via email flutterbycm@aol.com or call or text at 607-429-9079 if you have any questions. CHOW Pantry The CHOW Pantry at St. Paul’s is up and running! Nancy Elwood, Coordinator Women of the Church News Summer is coming and we will still gather as long as COVID permits. Over the next several months we are looking at bringing in speakers that will deal with some of the health issues and challenges faced by many of us as we age. We hope to learn about ways to do all we can to remain healthy and active, and also how to cope with existing illnesses and challenges faced by the patient, the caregiver, friends and family. This will also provide an opportunity to learn more about the programs available in our community that can assist us where ever we are in this journey. We will open these sessions to the entire parish and regardless of age feel it can provide some helpful information. We are currently setting up speakers and will keep you informed of upcoming presentations via email, Sunday bulletins and announcements. Gatherings will be scheduled in accordance with the availability of each speaker. Of course, it wouldn’t be a WoC event without snacks so we will be sure to include refreshments in our planning. Should you have a particular topic that you would be like to have included, please feel free to discuss this with me. Sandy Schwab, Chairperson Hot Dog Roast Thursday, July 21st, 6:00 p.m. Mark your calendars for Thursday, July 21st, for a Hot Dog Roast sponsored by the LCI Team. This event is free and everyone is invited, so bring an appetite and a friend with an appetite! Sides and desserts will accompany the dogs. Look for a sign-up sheet in the coming weeks. It’s Merry Mowing Time! The sun is shining (sometimes) and the rain is raining (often!). But, the grass is growing (in most spots!). Mowers are needed to keep the grounds neat and tidy. A self-propelled mower is in the shed. If you are willing to help, please sign up on the schedule in the back of the church. If it is convenient for your schedule, the ideal mowing days are Thursday through Saturday, so the lawn looks nice for Sunday. 9
Union-Endicott Spring Fest 2022 On May 21st, St. Paul's participated in the Union-Endicott Spring Fest. The event featured food, games, activities, and a raffle. St. Paul's distributed information about our CHOW Pantry/CHAP program, our Sharing Closet, and our Gould Allocation Grants. We also gave away pencils, pens, hard candies and lollipops. The event was a great way to show our support for our Endicott community, and we plan to participate in future "fests" hosted by Union- Endicott. Thank you to Ruthie Koerts for her assistance with this event! Grounds to Grow On Recycle your K-Cups We are still collecting used K-cups for recycling. The box is in the cloak room and the church office. Feel free to save up a bunch then drop them off at church. Or, simply leave a bag outside the Christian Ed door.
