A Message from Father Francis Lasrado
Lent Sunday IV
This weekend is the halfway mark of Lent. This Sunday is known as Laetare Sunday for the
first word of the Introit or Entrance Antiphon laetare (Latin for rejoice); it is a Sunday that
gives us a foretaste of Easter joy. This is also the Second Scrutiny in preparation for the baptism
of adults at the Easter Vigil.
In our Gospel for this weekend we have one of the best known and loved parables of Jesus.
Every time I read or hear it proclaimed I am inspired with insights old and new and I believe
most people have a similar experience; such is the power of this parable. Traditionally it is
known as the parable of the Prodigal Son; some prefer to call it the parable of the Prodigal
Father as they consider the father’s extraordinary love as the focus of the parable. Fr. Andrew
M. Greely called it the Parable of the Crazy Father to highlight the almost ridiculous and
extravagant way the father expresses his love.
As a very young artist, Rembrandt made a woodcut of the Prodigal Son that shows the son in
full face, falling before his father whose face we do not see. The focus is centered on the son.
Later in his life, Rembrandt changed it. Older and mature, he did a painting, the one we are
familiar with: the Return of the Prodigal. We no longer see the face of the son; all we see is his
back. The primary focus is shifted to the father; his face depicts his compassion, gentleness, love
and mercy. Every wrinkle, every line shouts of his love and forgiveness. It is the face of God. To
borrow Greely’s expression, God is crazy about us with regards to his compassion, love & mercy
toward us.
The other two characters, the younger son and the elder one, have important lessons to teach us
as well.
Speaking about Catholic traditions Scott Hahn said, “I am seeing a spiritual awakening across
America and across the world. There is a new generation of Catholics saying, ‘You know what,
the secularization, the materialism, the hedonism, it just leaves you jaded, if not addicted.’” We
may not have many instances of young people going away from the love of the parents the
dramatic way the prodigal son did in the parable. Instead, there are number of typically
modern, subtle ways people today, not just the youth, drift away from God’s love, faith and
religion. The reason is not always disgruntlement and frustration with God and church but their
obsession with self-interest and whatever they feel would give them gratification; quite often it
is power, pleasure, wealth, and honor that entice them and they fall for them and in the process
walk away from the Father’s love and the fellowship of the community of believers, the church.
We often ignore the elder son and his sinister ways which are even more vicious. I would
imagine many of us can identify with him if we honestly analyze our behavior. He feels he
'deserves' his father’s love and attention because he considers himself ‘the good son’ who is
always keeping the rules and doing the right thing. But he is malicious and is angry that his
father welcomes his brother who has wasted not only his share of inheritance but also taken
advantage of his father's love and goodness.
Lent is the time for all to return to the Father’s love: Those who have distanced themselves, to
once again savor the sweetness of being welcomed back into the father’s love. Those who think
they deserve the father’s love, to know they cannot ‘earn’ it but ‘experience’ its expansiveness
deeply and know the joy of being in the company of the one who loves them to death.
Be prodigal like the Father!

Our Religious Education Program
begins with little ones entering into first grade and
their parents. This is the first of a two-year First
Holy Communion preparation. We have had a
wonderful year thus far with our families! as they
entered into level one of First Holy Communion
preparation. Recently the children and their
parents came to the Chapel at St. Charles where
they encountered Jesus, Face to face, in the
Eucharist. Deacon Mike read to them the story of
The Road to Emmaus. He then exposed Jesus in
the monstrance and no doubt the children's hearts
burned with excitement and love of the Real Presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Children wrote and placed their prayers
at Jesus' feet. It was such a beautiful experience for all of us! On a recent Sunday, it was a blessing to see so many of our First Holy
Communion Level One families at the assigned Mass for their grade level. Students were asked to write a "love letter" to Jesus
ahead of time and place it in the offertory basket. Some of what they wrote follows:
Dear Jesus, I love you because you created me. Love, Anthony
Dear Jesus, I love you so much because you love me. Coreliese

Garden of the Sacred Heart of Christ Brick Engraving Offering
The Knights of Columbus Joan of Arc Council 1992 is
once again opening the Garden of the Sacred Heart of
Christ to those who wish to place an engraved brick in
the garden patio. We thank all those who donated in
the past who helped restore the century old Statue of
the Sacred Heart of Christ and to make this garden a
prayerful and reverent place. To date, there have been
well over 400 personalized engraved bricks placed in
memory of loved ones, prayers to specific saints and
blessings to the Parish. This Spring, you will once
again see new colorful, seasonal plantings placed on
the patio. Please see the rear of the flyer that will be
handed out after the masses for detailed information
on how you can have an engraved brick placed in the
Garden of the Sacred Heart of Christ. Orders will only
be accepted until March 30, 2022. We anticipate all
bricks to be installed by Memorial Day weekend.
Your donation of $125 per engraved brick
placed in the garden allows the Knights to upkeep this
garden along with supporting Parish projects,
Seminarian vocations, Religious Education programs,
Right to Life programs, and other charities that promote traditional Catholic values.
As an example to our commitment to the Parish, in Decem ber 2021, the Joan of Ar c
Council replaced the wooden cross in front of the Church due to the wood showing decay and
repainted the corpus back to its original gold color.
Thank you for your continued support of this project.
*** If you have ordered a brick in the past and have found
an error in spelling or an omission, please let us know
by contacting the Joan of Arc Council at
Kofc.JoanofArc1992@hotmail.com. Someone will contact
you in regards to make the necessary corrections.***Page 12 March 27, 2022
