O N THE S AME P AGE Rev. Denis B. Theroux, Pastor The Bap tism of the Lord Dear Friends, Today the Church celebrates the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. This brings to an end the season of Christmas. The Church recalls Jesus’s second manifestation or epiphany which occurred on the occasion of His baptism in the Jordan. Jesus descended into the River to bless its waters and to give them the power to create “us” into the children of God. The event takes on the importance of a second creation in which the entire Trinity intervenes. The mystery of Jesus’s baptism in the Jordan by John, the Forerunner, o ers us the re ection of an already adult Jesus. This mystery is intrinsically linked to the Solemnities of Jesus’s birth and the Solemnity of the Epiphany that we celebrated last weekend. At Christmas we re ected on the human birth of Jesus, as St. John calls him, “the Word Incarnate” by the Virgin Mary. In the 4th century, the Fathers of the Church deepened the understanding of the faith with regard to the Christmas mystery in the light of Jesus’ Humanity. They spoke of the Incarnation of the Word already working like the ‘Christi cation’ of that humanity that he had assumed from His mother. Or put in simpler terms: Jesus is the Christ from the rst instant of conception in Mary’s womb because He Himself, with His Divinity, consecrated, anointed and ‘Christi ed’ that human nature with which He became incarnate. In the mystery of the Epiphany, we meditated on Jesus’s manifestation to all nations that was represented, of course by the Magi, the wise from the East, who came to adore the Child. Today, in the mystery of Jesus’s Baptism in the Jordan River, we encounter once again, the truth of Jesus’s incarnation and His manifestation as the Anointed One - the Christ. Jesus’ Baptism is in fact His decisive manifestation as the Messiah or Savior to Israel, and as the Son of the Father to the entire world. Here we nd the breadth of the Epiphany which was His manifestation to all nations. The Father’s “voice” from the heavens shows that Jesus is the Eternal Son and the descent of the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove shows our understanding of a “Trinitarian” God. That we which we believe as the true and unique God; who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Today’s Feast, The Baptism of the Lord, reunites us to the great Christmas theme; Jesus of Nazareth is God’s Anointed One par excellence, the Messiah or the One sent by the Father for the salvation of humankind. The Spirit that descended on Jesus shows and seals in an undeniable way the humanity and the Divinity of Jesus and announces that He, the Word, has been from the very beginning, and always will be God’s Anointed, the Lord Jesus. In Israel at 30 years of age, one reached full maturity and therefore could become a master. Jesus came of age and the Spirit, descending and remaining on Him, de nitively sancti ed His whole being as the Christ. The same Spirit, that descended on the water of the River Jordan came over the waters during the rst creation. Therefore, the Baptism in the Jordan o ers another truth: that Jesus has started a “new creation.” He is the new Adam, that comes to restore that which was lost by the rst Adam. And Jesus does this for He is the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world…our sins and we are made new! Happy New Year! Want to learn more about Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)? Tax Advantaged Ways to Give to Our Parish Parishioners may consider these two tax-advantaged ways to make charitable gifts to our parish at the year end. I.Gifts of Appreciated Securities Gifts of appreciated securities continue to be beneficial for donors since they offer significant tax advantages including income tax deductions and avoidance of tax on capital gains if the donor were to sell the highly appreciated securities. Through a gift of appreciated securities to benefit our parish, including to the Catholic Services Appeal, parishioners who itemize may receive an income tax deduction up to the full market value of the securities and can also avoid capital gains tax on the appreciation. In essence, you may save twice — on income tax and capital gains tax. II.IRA Rollover -- Qualified Charitable Distribution The IRA qualified charitable distribution (QCD) provides a way for donors 70 ½ and older to receive a tax benefit for their generosity. It is beneficial because the QCD will not be included in adjusted gross income and is therefore not subject to tax. This is now more beneficial in view of the increased standard deduction in the new tax law. A donor can make a QCD of up to $100,000 annually directly from the IRA to a charity, and as an added benefit, if the donor is age 72, the QCD satisfies the donor’s required minimum distribution. Parishioners 70 ½ or older should consult with their IRA administrator for the procedure to make a QCD to our parish. For More Information, contact the Parish Office at (248) 349-2621. Please consult your tax or financial advisor. Our parish and the Archdiocese of Detroit are not engaged in legal or tax advisory service. The examples listed above are intended to provide useful information of a general character only. For specific advice and assistance please consult a qualified tax or financial advisor. We Need Your Help! T hank you for your continuous support of OLV! We could not function without your generous gifts of time and monetary donations. For those using envelopes, we want to be sure that your donation is recorded accurately. Please keep the following guidelines in mind. 1. Be sure to use your church envelopes. If you have not received them, please contact Ellen at eoneil@olvnorthville.net, who will make sure that you are on the mailing list to receive checks and help determine into any potential problems with the mailing. 2. Please do not tape, staple, or apply stickers to your church envelopes. The glue provided holds well and prevents destruction of the envelope while opening. Your envelopes are legal documents which we must keep for auditing purposes. 3. If you are donating two or more Sunday envelopes at one time, you only one check is needed for the total Sunday donation. 4. Special Collection envelopes should have separate checks for each collection. 5. As always, please be sure to include the date, written amount, and signature on each check. 6. If you would like to switch your donation to the online format, please call the Parish Of ce and we can help you get setup! Baptism of the Lord Page 5 January 9, 2022 fi
T he liturgical Christmas Season comes to an end today, long a er the Christmas carols have ended, and music has been put away. But Jesus’ earthly ministry and his journey to Jerusalem begins with his bap sm in the Jordan River. It is 156 miles long, beginning in the mountainous area of Israel, Syria, and Jordan, running through the Sea of Galilee and ending in the Dead Sea. The Jordan River has a spiritual signi cance: for the Jewish people, it was where the Israelites camped and crossed on dry ground into the promised land under Joshua; it was where Jesus was bap zed by John; the prophets Elijah and Elisha crossed the river on dry ground; and the general Namaan was cleansed of leprosy a er washing in its waters directed by the prophet Elisha. The Jordan River is not the river that Robert Lowry was inspired by when he wrote “Shall We Gather at the River,” but by his medita on on the river of crystal clear water of life that owed from out from the throne of God. The hymn was rst published as “Beau ful River” in 1865. The hymn tune is HANSON PLACE, also wri en by Lowry, and is named a er the Hanson Place Bap st Church in Brooklyn, New York where Lowry was a minister at the me of the hymn wri ng. ~ Kathy The Voice of the Prophets: Ten Week Adult Education Series This series held at St. Colette will o er a survey of the Old Testament prophetic literature. We will look into the historical, biblical context and message of each of the prophets found in the Old Testament. Each lesson will then track their individual message through to the New Testament in hopes of challenging participants with what it means for our lives today. One may think that the prophets who spoke thousands of years ago would not be pertinent to our culture and society today, but you would be sadly mistaken. We will see in this study that their messages holds the truths of faith and needs to be heard, understood and lived out today. This study will begin Wednesday February 2, 2022 and continue for ten weeks ending April 6, 2022. We will meet in the Church from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Theresa Lisiecki will be our facilitator and these presentations will be available each week on the St. Colette Facebook page. No sign up or fees. Just come seeking to know the Lord better. OLV HIGH SCHOOL MINISTRY A Great Event is Coming to OLV St. Vincent de Paul Society Conference #437 Detroit! Live Your Faith. RISE Detroit 2022 Join the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Since 1833, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul has been servicing those in need. After Jesus was baptized, he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and a voice was heard “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” As we offer help to our neighbor in need, we also can hear these same words. The fire of the Holy Spirit gives us the grace to be God’s presence for one another: “The best thing to give…to your enemy, forgiveness; to an opponent, tolerance; to a friend, your heart; to your child, a good example; to a mother, reverence; to your father, conduct that will make him proud of you; to yourself, respect; to all people, charity.” All that A Gathering of High School Youth was precisely what Jesus Christ did. May we be strengthened to do Sunday, February 6, 2022 likewise. (McCullen, Deep Down Things, p.728) 8:15 a.m.–7:15 p.m. Interested in joining OLV’s St. Vincent de Paul Ministry?
