Refurbishment of Browning Close Play Area The Play area at Browning Close will be refurbished in Autumn 2021. The total cost of the project is £31,967. Bromham Parish Council have successfully bid for £15,983 from Bedford Borough Council’s Rural Affairs Committee. Thank you to them for their support! Councillors Rigby and Gambold have agreed to contribute £3,000 from their Councillor Fund, thank you to them also. The new equipment has been chosen to be inclusive for all abilities with particular focus on children with disabilities. The equipment will be supplied by Kompan Ltd, a supplier the Parish Council have used before for the Molivers Lane Play Area. Their equipment is a quality product which is relatively maintenance free. Bromham Primary School I have been at the school for just over two and a half years and if I am still here for another twenty two and a half years down the road, I will surely have a lot to say about the last 25 years at Bromham CofE Primary however what I can say about the past two and a half years is that the last 18 months have been like no other in my time of being a teacher, never mind a headteacher! Everybody within the Bromham school community has coped with the changes of the past two academic years with real resilience. I know it has not been easy. I know that some of our children have found the rollercoaster of the last academic year more challenging than others. I know that for some, this time will leave more lasting scars than others. Each one of our children has managed as well as they can and that, is good enough. I have spent some of my summer break preparing for September and beyond; schools are like machines, they don’t ever really stop. This year, will be a good one…I’m sure. On a final note, we will be scheduling school visits for any parents who are looking for a school place for their child in September 2022, please keep an eye out on the school website for these dates; I would love to show you the great things your children will experience during their time at Bromham CofE Primary. FROM THE CHAIR Welcome to the 25th year of the Broadsheet. What a much loved publication this has become, keeping the whole community informed and connected. I hope that life is resuming to a form of normal for you all, and you are enjoying spending time with family and friends. It has certainly been good to meet as a Parish Council face to face after so many months of virtual meetings! As we approach the autumn, we are looking forward to the re-opening of the Mill Coffee House. The Parish Council would like to wish Mitch Macfarlane and his team well with the new venture, and I hope you will all support the return of the much-loved cafe. This signals that negotiations with the Borough on a lease to take over management of the Mill facility are reaching a conclusion, so I am sure there will be more exciting new on the horizon soon. It is with some disappointment that we have had to announce that Apple Day will not go ahead this year. As there is still some need to take precautions against the spread of coronavirus, and visitor’s safety is of utmost priority, we felt that it would be unwise to proceed. We are looking of staging some smaller community events at Christmas and Easter and are hopeful that we will return both the popular Duck Race and Apple Day next year. On a final note, I would like to send best wishes, both personally and on behalf of the Parish Council, to the family of Terry Barrett. Terry sadly died in August this year. He was an invaluable maintenance man to the Parish Council for 12 years, and many of you will have seen him working in many areas of the village. BROMHAM ALLOTMENTS ASSOCIATION We do congratulate the Broadsheet on its 25th Anniversary. Here at Bromham Allotments, we are now in our 11th year. As you can see from the photos, we began with a blank canvas, designing, then measuring out the plots, paths and roadways. As the site developed, we have added a wildlife area with pond, some community fruit trees, picnic area and several rainwater collection stations. We now have 60 plots with each plot holder having their own style of ‘Grow your Own’. Every season has its challenges, whether that be the weather, some hungry mice, birds or simply 'If at first you don't succeed, try something different....' However, there is no doubt that when we do get it right, the reward of freshly picked produce is worth every bit of effort! We do hope that we shall be able to hold an Open Day in 2022....watch this space! Contact:- Jan Oliver 01234 825246 or Judy Hammond 07745569044. Bromham WI Bromham WI has always been a keen participant in village life over the years and it celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2017. We have supported the Bromham Show for many years, providing a wonderful selection of cakes and drinks, with members willingly giving their time to bake before and serve on the day. These have been a popular service over the years and is much appreciated by the crowds. Members have supported the craft fairs, too in the past as they have also given time and money to various charities, both locally and through the National Federation of WI's. We have made a positive response to National Days of Friendship and have responded to a variety of resolutions about women's health engendered by the NFWI. We have enjoyed sending congratulatory cards to the Queen for most of her Jubilees and have enjoyed appreciative responses. Friendship and learning is at the heart of our meetings so we hope to continue well into the future and to remain at the heart of village life, supporting activities like the environmental projects to come. Eulogy for the Late Joyce Brooks Joyce was born in Bromham on 20 August 1935 to Andrew and Dorothy Chambers. A younger sister to Pansy and some years later, an elder sister to Susan. Joyce attended Dame Alice School and after leaving she went to work at an Accounts Office in Bedford. Despite suffering badly with pneumonia as a child, as an adult she was very fit and would cycle to work every day. Her love of animals and gardening is well known. She had her own chickens from an early age and during her lifetime kept rabbits, chickens, ducks and goats, along with a number of dogs and cats, often taking in dogs that needed a home. Both Joyce and John lived in the village and their paths must have crossed at some point. Susan remembers meeting John for the first time at the allotment, when Joyce introduced him to her Father. They courted and were married on 21 March 1959 at St Owen’s Church. They moved to 1 Molivers Lane and worked one of the allotments opposite, now Willow Close. Richard was born in 1963 followed by Jacqueline in 1966. In 1969 the family moved to 56 Village Road, a house which would become their home for the rest of their lives. John worked for the Council and every day Joyce would make his packed lunch, which would always include four pieces of cake, many homemade. Joyce and John were good friends and neighbours to many in Bromham, and further afield, and would always help anyone in need. Their contribution to the local community was recognised in 1996 when they received the Mayor of Bedford’s Good Neighbour Award. Then again in 2000 when they were given the Bromham Village Award, in recognition to their contribution to village life. John and Joyce raised thousands of pounds for charity, through parties, sales and events. They supported Bedford Hospital; ARC (Arthritis Research Council); Guide Dogs for the Blind; RATS (Rehoming Animal Telephone Service) and the Epilepsy Society to name just a few. Joyce also supported Pansy in the running of the monthly Church Bingo and worked with Flora to run the Annual Church Bazaar. Both Joyce and John worked hard on the land, supplying the village, and beyond, with fruit and vegetables sold from their doorstep. Their beans and rhubarb being among the best sellers! They would also give advice on all manner of things to do with gardening and animals and their love of gardening has been passed on to all the family. Joyce was a staunch supporter of Bromham Show, exhibiting every year and being a Committee Member for many. In 1990 Joyce and John became Grandparents for the first time when Matthew was born and again in 1993 when Sarah arrived. Both Matthew and Sarah remember their Nan as always being happy to see them, greeting them with a big smile and, when they were younger, letting them each choose a box of cakes or biscuits from the cupboard to open. They also treasure their memories of feeding goats and collecting chicken’s eggs, things not all children get to do! Sadly, John died in 2005 but Joyce continued to be independent and carried on working the piece of land in Village Road, keeping chickens and growing vegetables. Her bike was invaluable for this, being used to transport all kinds of goods back and forth. Joyce remained active all her life, both physically and mentally, and whilst not having the slightest inclination to use the internet or have a mobile phone she always showed an interest in Matthew and Sarah’s gadgets and their use of technology. After Joyce suffered a stroke in February this year, the final weeks of her life were spent in Bedford Hospital. Joyce was so much part of Bromham and will be remembered and missed by all her family and friends. Volunteering with Bromham Conservation Group Bromham Conservation Group is a group of volunteers working with the Borough and Parish Councils, and in future with the new Bromham Mill Trust. We help maintain and develop the extensive grounds at Bromham Mill, Bromham Lake Local Nature Reserve in Lower Farm Road, Salem Thrift ancient woodland off Northampton Road, the Community Orchard at Parklands and the wildlife pond at the Paddock off Oakley Road. Although the Group is not quite as old as the Broadsheet, we date back to 2008 when the Parish Council launched what was then Bromham P3 Group. We have built up a useful collection of hand and powered tools, equipment and materials, some purchased for us by the Parish or Borough Councils, while others were kind donated by local people. These enable us to tackle a wide variety of conservation tasks within the village. After months of lockdown and restrictions, the rules are now more relaxed, allowing us to work together to keep local open spaces in good order. Despite restrictions, we managed to put in over 900 volunteer hours at local sites during 2020 and expect to exceed this comfortably in 2021. With enjoyable company, it is also great fun working together on our various projects. If you are interested in what we do, like working outdoors and fancy giving local volunteering a try, please get in touch with us. We issue a regular email newsletter to tell our supporters what we have achieved and explain what we plan to do next. All volunteers welcome. For further details of our programme and regular activities, visit the parish website, phone Peter Argyle on 01234 822698 or email bcg@peterargyle.plus.com.
