G.Y.C Ministry Faith & Mission ST VINCENT DE PAUL – YOUTH INDUCTION MASS GYC was well represented at the Youth Induction Mass held at St Therese’s Parish at Moonah in a Mass concelebrated by Fr Richard Ross. In the Mass, students joined across all Vinnies groups in the south to commit themselves to service of the poor and marginalized in our Hobart Community. Those who become involved in Vinnies in Youth do so generously and go on to support the work of St Vincent de Paul all their lives. Each campus group received their blessed badges and candles and will continue to progress the Buddy Days and Winter drives and initiatives of Vinnies in their hard working Justice Action Committees on each campus. It is never too late to join a Vinnies committee. CARITAS QUIZ NIGHT On Friday 27 May, the Student Leaders, with the support of staff and sponsors, led a Quiz Night in support of Caritas and their efforts in Ukraine. Caritas has worked closely with those effected in Ukraine by supplying them with vital shelter, food, clean water and protection for vulnerable people and families. A large amount of preparation went into the organising of the quiz night, with many leaders and staff giving up their Friday night to come run the night. The night was a huge success, raising a total of $1,025 for Caritas. We are extremely lucky to be able to help those in a time that is needed. It was an exciting and fun event that allowed us to gather as a community and support a great cause. We were supported by donations from many different sponsors and we would like to extend our gratitude and thanks to those supporters of Caritas and Guilford Young College. A big thank you to all the staff and students involved in the catering and food prep boxes which were a big hit and to all the staff and students who helped and supported throughout the night. 5 G.Y.C news | 9 JUNE
G.Y.C Ministry Faith & Mission FOCUS DAYS WITH MIKE FITZPATRICK For the last 24 years we have been the only College in Tasmania that Mike Fitzpatrick has travelled to Tasmania to work with on carefully planned Year 11 and 12 Focus Days. We feel very fortunate to have his skilled presence, his wide experience working with young adults in Catholic Schools over 30 years and across the country. As well as being a skilled presenter, facilitator and person of faith, Mike is a gifted musician. These days are compulsory and along side our expectation of studying a Religious Education subject are our compulsory requirement of each student graduating the College at the end of Year 12. For years I have been reminded that it was one day that students rated as a high point of their College life. Why? Because they are with their peers, in warm comfortable clothing, away from their phones and books and able to express their hopes, aspirations, fears and concerns as a year group and as a mechanism for moving forward with hope in their lives. Mike uses music, group activities, sharing (by invitation) and many strategies to build trust and growth during the day. This is NOT a day for students to book appointments, it really detracts from the flow of the day for others if students come and go and do not commit to be present to one another. We seek parental support in this as our College gives aside time after the mid year exams for an important re focus and engagement in mental, social and spiritual wellbeing of each of our students. When you reflect on your own busy adult lives I am sure you would cherish time out to “reflect” and refocus, please support your young adult to do the same. Hobart students will be bussed to the Bosco Theatre for their days due to the College renovations. Hobart Year 11s – Tuesday 5 July – Departure from Barrack Street at 9.00am Departure from Glenorchy Bosco Theatre 2.50pm (Please note the time change – wear warm comfortable clothing and bring lunch or money for the canteen) Hobart and Glenorchy 12s – Wednesday 6 July – Departure from Barrack Street at 9.00am Departure from the Glenorchy Bosco Theatre 2.50pm ( Warm, comfortable clothing for movement, bring lunch or money for the canteen) Glenorchy Year 11s – Thursday 7 July - Glenorchy students in the Bosco Theatre at 9.00am – 2.50 pm. G.Y.C Ministry FLINDERS ISLAND TRIP Recentley, eleven First Nations students and two community members, Carleeta Thomas and Jamie Graham-Blair travelled to Flinders Island for a four-day cultural heritage expedition. Students took the 8.00am flight from Launceston to Whitemark Airport and spent a full day exploring the Furneaux Museum, the township of Whitemark and taking some small coastal walks in the south and east of the Island. Carleeta and Jamie shared their extensive knowledge of the Island’s food resources and history, and encouraged students to draw on past knowledge in identifying bush foods. The following day, the group travelled to Castle Rock and then to Killiekrankie in the north of the Island where Margaret Wheatley explained the process of fossicking for the eponymous diamonds. In the afternoon, students spent time at Wyballena, a site of exile for the remaining Tasmanian Aboriginal People on the Tasmanian mainland administered by George Augustus Robinson from 1833-1847. On Thursday, half the group climbed Mount Strzelecki, a considerable climb, while others made their way to Trousers Point, walking along the beautiful coastline and learning about Chappell Island’s enormous snakes. On the final day, students visited the Wombat Rescue at The Purple Swamphen. The rich cultural landscape, windswept beautiful environment was an unforgettable experience for students and we are extremely grateful to Jamie and Carleeta for sharing their knowledge so generously with us. G.Y.C ARC NEWS Ministry ANTI-RACISM AND ALLYSHIP CONFERENCE 2022 ARC Leader, Dr Demelza Hall, attended the annual Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) conference in Canberra (Ngunnawal Country) last week to explore how the ARC can continue to support the diverse needs of our students, staff, and the broader GYC community. With a focus on diversity, inclusion, and allyship, the conference emphasised the benefits of working closely with community stakeholders, particularly First Nations peoples, to ensure that all learning spaces are grounded upon the needs and values of the communities that they serve. Dr Hall hopes to implement several strategic changes to the ARC as a result of this conference, starting with the development of a dedicated First Nations space – where GYC’s collection of texts by, and about, First Nations peoples are not only displayed more prominently but are also re-catalogued so that appropriate cultural warnings are highlighted. ARC We are pleased to present some renders of the new Academic Research Centre (ARC) that will shortly begin construction at our Hobart Campus. The ARC recognises that learning happens best in high quality, safe environments. Environments with well-considered indoor air quality, comfort conditions (thermal, visual, tactile and acoustic), access to daylight, view and aesthetics. And, learning occurs differently for different people, and as such a range of spaces should be provided to accommodate these differences. Over the last 18 months we have been designing our new ARC. The ARC is split into 3 zones. Collaborative/Social – A place for group work, conversations, and connections. 11 G.Y.C news | 9 JUNE
G.Y.C ARC NEWS Reference/Research/Services – A space that will house a print collection, research tools, ARC assistants, ICT, Counselling services, Offices, meeting booths, Careers, etc. Quiet Study – A peaceful, ambient, and quiet area for study, reflection and research. Our ARC is available to both campuses and will enrich the lives of all members of the GYC community. Students, teachers, staff, parents and carers will all benefit from our new facility. The ARC is designed to work independently from the other buildings and spaces. This means the facility can operate securely after hours, and during school holidays. We hope to bring not only our GYC community into the ARC, but other groups as well such as artists, authors, universities, and community groups. We will provide more information and images of our new ARC over the coming months. Mr Stuart Brinsmead Director of e-Learning & Information Systems 12 G.Y.C news | 9 JUNE

Any interested students should contact the Sport Department. Entries Close Thursday 23 June. GYC 2nd XVIII Football In only 7 days, the GYC boys evolved into major contenders. Re-gaining a number of key players from illness, and securing the playing services of a few more, the numbers were overflowing on the sidelines as they took to the field at the Friendly Fortress in New Town for the second week running. A slow start had the newly formed team on the back foot early, but a couple of key players took the game by the scruff of the neck as the members from both campuses began to really gel together in the second term to take a 1 point lead into half time. Inspirational speeches of an elite level were given by the captain and co-captain respectively and the team hit the turf fired up for the second half. A barrage of goals was to follow, as GYC gained control under the eye of the Glenorchy Football Club President on scouting duties. Friends were able to call on some experienced hands and years of cohesion, to wrangle back the momentum and begin to claw back the lead. Coach Artis pleaded with his team to utilise the fresh legs and pressure to grind the Friends’ team out of the game. To which the team responded and gave it their all. As the sun set, the smiles and laughter around the ground tuned into the fantastic display of contested football that was going on. Great support and great team efforts resulted in a fantastic experience for all those involved. With the two warm up games now out of the way, the GYC 2nd XVIII are looking forward to playing Friends’ in their third game.
