The Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany February 6, 2022 Sanctuary Services, CarChurchFM 90.5 & Facebook Services at 9:45 a.m. Grace and Peace are yours, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ! It is an overwhelming blessing to worship together in the house of the Lord. The sanctuary of a church is many things. The sanctuary is a banquet hall, where we feast at God's table, receiving eternal gifts here in time. The sanctuary is a training ground, where we learn to pray, to confess, and to worship. The sanctuary is a hospital, where we come to have our wounds bound up by Jesus, the great physician. This sanctuary is full of memories of baptisms and weddings; full of songs from generations of believers and sermons from generations of preachers; full of hope and forgiveness; full of Jesus. Above all, that is why we are here, to receive Jesus, and to respond to Him in prayer and praise. May God bless your time of worship today. ~ Pastor Ulm Visitors, welcome to Ascension! We are so glad to have you here. If it is your first time here, please take a moment to say hello to our pastor. He would love to meet you. Feel free to ask an usher or any of our members if you have any questions about the service. If today is a communion Sunday, we invite you forward to receive the sign of the cross and words of blessing during the distribution of communion. Pastor would love to talk with you about our adult instruction class and communion! If you are visiting and desire to commune, please speak with Pastor before service. Prelude Welcome & Announcements Sharing of Peace P The peace of the Lord be with always. C And also with you. (Congregation will share the peace of the Lord with one another)
Opening Hymn Oh, for a Thousand Tongues to Sing LSB 829 1 Oh, for a thousand tongues to sing My great Redeemer’s praise, The glories of my God and King, The triumphs of His grace! 2 My gracious Master and my God, Assist me to proclaim, To spread through all the earth abroad, The honors of Thy name. 3 Jesus! The name that charms our fears, That bids our sorrows cease; ’Tis music in the sinner’s ears, ’Tis life and health and peace. 4 He breaks the pow’r of canceled sin; He sets the pris’ner free. His blood can make the foulest clean; His blood avails for me. 5 Look unto Him, ye nations; own Your God, ye fallen race. Look and be saved through faith alone, Be justified by grace. 6 See all your sins on Jesus laid; The Lamb of God was slain. His soul was once an off’ring made For ev’ry soul of man. 7 To God all glory, praise, and love Be now and ever giv’n By saints below and saints above, The Church in earth and heav’n. Confession and Absolution The sign of the cross T may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism. P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination. P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. Please Be Seated
Psalm Psalm 138 Tune: When I Survey the Wondrous Cross 1 I’ll praise You, Lord, with all my heart; before the “gods” I’ll praise impart. 2 I’ll bow down toward Your holy place, and praise Your name for love and grace. You have exalted o’er all things, Your name and word, which true life bring. 3 The day I called, You answered me; You made me bold and strong to be. 4 May all the kings of earth praise You, Lord, when they hear Your words so true. 5 May they sing of the ways of God; the Lord’s great glory known abroad. 6 For though the Lord on high is great, yet He regards our lowly state, And looks on those who humble are, but proud ones He knows from afar. 7 Though I walk in the midst of strife, O Lord, You do preserve my life. You stretch Your hand against my foes; Your right hand saves; You them oppose. 8 The Lord’s own purposes and will for me He’ll finish and fulfill. Your love, O Lord, forever stands; forsake not the work of Your hands. Service of the Word Kyrie P In peace let us pray to the Lord. C Lord, have mercy.
P For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord. C Lord, have mercy. P For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord. C Lord, have mercy. P For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord. C Lord, have mercy. P Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. C Amen. Gloria P Glory to God in the highest, and peace to His people on earth. C Lord God, heavenly king, almighty God and Father: We worship You, we give You thanks, we praise You for Your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God: You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. You are seated at the right hand of the Father; receive our prayer. For You alone are the Holy One, You alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Prayer of the Day P The Lord be with you. C And also with you.
P Let us pray: O Lord, keep Your family the Church continually in the true faith that, relying on the hope of Your heavenly grace, we may ever be defended by Your mighty power; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. Old Testament Reading Isaiah 6:1-8 In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!” Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.” And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.”
L This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Epistle Reading 1 Corinthians 14:12b-20 Since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church. Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray for the power to interpret. For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful. What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also. Otherwise, if you give thanks with your spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsider say “Amen” to your thanksgiving when he does not know what you are saying? For you may be giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not being built up. I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. Nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue. Brothers, do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature. L This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Please Stand If You Are Able Alleluia (spoken) C Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia, alleluia.
Holy Gospel Luke 5:1-11 th P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 5 Chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on [Jesus] to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ. Please Be Seated Sermon

Prayers of the Church Lord’s Prayer P Hear us as we pray in His name and as he has taught us: C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Preface (spoken) P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Lift up your hearts. C We lift them to the Lord. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C It is right to give Him thanks and praise. P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God. In the communion of all Your saints gathered into the one body of Your Son, You have surrounded us with so great a cloud of witnesses that we, encouraged by their faith and strengthened by their fellowship, may run with perseverance the race that is set before us and, together with them, receive the crown of glory that does not fade away. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: Sanctus (sung) LSB 161 C Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of pow'r and might: Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna. Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Prayer of Thanksgiving P Blessed are You, O Lord our God, king of all creation, for You have had mercy on us and given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish by have eternal life. In Your righteous judgment You condemned the sin of Adam and Eve, who ate the forbidden fruit, and You justly barred them and all their children from the tree of life. Yet, in Your great mercy, You promised salvation by a second Adam, Your
Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, and made His cross a life-giving tree for all who trust in Him. We give You thanks for the redemption You have prepared for us through Jesus Christ. Grant us Your Holy Spirit that we may faithfully eat and drink of the fruits of His cross and receive the blessings of forgiveness, life, and salvation that come to us in His body and blood. C Amen. The Words of Our Lord P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” Pax Domini (The Peace of the Lord) P The peace of the Lord be with you always. C Amen. Agnus Dei (spoken) LSB 163 C Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. He Himself makes preparation, And I hear His invitation: “Come and taste the blessèd feast.” 2 Christ Himself, the priest presiding, Yet in bread and wine abiding In this holy sacrament, Gives the bread of life, once broken, And the cup, the precious token Of His sacred covenant. 3 Under bread and wine, though lowly, I receive the Savior holy, Blood and body, giv’n for me, Very Lamb of God from heaven, Who to bitter death was given, Hung upon the cursèd tree. 4 God descends with heav’nly power, Gives Himself to me this hour In this ordinary sign. On my tongue His pledge receiving, I accept His grace, believing That I taste His love divine.
5 Let me praise God’s boundless favor, Whose own feast of love I savor, Bidden by His gracious call. Wedding garments He provides me, With a robe of white He hides me, Fits me for the royal hall. 6 Now have I found consolation, Comfort in my tribulation, Balm to heal the troubled soul. God, my shield from ev’ry terror, Cleanses me from sin and error, Makes my wounded spirit whole. Text: © David W. Rogner. He recalls His promises and leads His people forth in joy with shouts of thanksgiving. Alleluia, alleluia.
Post-Communion Collect P Let us pray: We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this salutary gift, and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through the same in faith toward You and fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Closing Hymn Praise to the Lord, the Almighty LSB 790 1 Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation! O my soul, praise Him, for He is your health and salvation! Let all who hear Now to His temple draw near, Joining in glad adoration! 2 Praise to the Lord, who o’er all things is wondrously reigning And, as on wings of an eagle, uplifting, sustaining. Have you not seen All that is needful has been Sent by His gracious ordaining?
3 Praise to the Lord, who has fearfully, wondrously, made you, Health has bestowed and, when heedlessly falling, has stayed you. What need or grief Ever has failed of relief? Wings of His mercy did shade you. 4 Praise to the Lord, who will prosper your work and defend you; Surely His goodness and mercy shall daily attend you. Ponder anew What the Almighty can do As with His love He befriends you. 5 Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore Him! All that has life and breath, come now with praises before Him! Let the Amen Sound from His people again; Gladly forever adore Him! Text: Public domain P Go in peace to serve the Lord. C Proclaiming and Demonstrating the Good News of Jesus Christ. Prayers of the Church Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. O Lord God of hosts, build up Your Church and manifest Your Spirit among us with wisdom and knowledge. Let our words be
measured and intelligible to our fellow Christians and to those outside Your Church, that we may utter our “Amens” in Christ. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. Sustain those called to be fishers of men in Christ’s Church, that they would not be discouraged when they toil all night and take nothing, but continue to let down their nets at His Word according to that calling. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. Grant us Your Holy Spirit, that we may be mature in our thinking and infants in evil. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. Bless all Christian homes, that Your Word would be sown and produce much fruit. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. Give us faith to let down the nets of Your Word in our daily vocations and trust Your Son to do His gracious work through poor sinners like us. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. O God, be not far from us. As You have worked deeds of salvation in Christ Jesus, so make haste to help us now in every trouble. Give healing to the sick, strength to the weak and comfort to the afflicted especially those in our thoughts and prayers. Do not forsake us nor the generations to come. Send from Your altar, O Lord, the body and blood of Christ. Cleanse us and our lips by this blessed Sacrament, delivering the atonement Christ has won for us, that we may be worthy to stand before You now and at the Last Day. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. O Lord, never depart from us. Though we are unworthy of You and Your bounty, You are pleased to receive our meager thanks and reluctant obedience for the sake of Christ’s perfect obedience. Let Your Word rule us and Your Spirit revive us to leave behind pride and anxiety alike, that we may follow You in all we do; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the same Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
