Karratha is the powerhouse of the Pilbara and a focal point of the Oil,

Karratha, with a population approaching 17,000, is located approximately 1,535
kilometres north of Perth and 850 kilometres south of Broome on the North
West Coastal Highway. Karratha was founded in 1968 and is known for its

range of local amenities and community groups to support newcomers to
the region. With a number of Primary Schools, two High Schools and the

The $207M Karratha Health Campus, currently under development, will replace the Nikol Bay Hospital in

Karratha’s new Red Earth Arts Precinct, which opened in May 2018, provides innovative and contemporary
facilities including a 450 seat performing arts theatre, outdoor amphitheatre, library, art gallery, local history
museum and a roof top terrace which will host the Moonrise Cinema.
Heading out to Dampier, you will find the newly renovated Dampier Foreshore to enjoy beautiful days at
the beach. Past Dampier is the Archipelago, consisting of 42 stunning islands where you can snorkel, dive,
fish, windsurf, camp and go boating. Green, loggerhead, flatback and hawksbill turtles nest on the beaches
while dugongs, dolphins and humpback whales are often seen in surrounding waters.

Tips to consider
General tips when seeking work in and around Karratha:
•   Do your homework. Research mining, construction and logistics companies and the positions within
    them to make an educated decision on your career path.
•   For those with little or no experience in the mining and construction industry, be prepared and source
    accommodation by financing it yourself as not every company in Karratha offers housing.
•   Obtain as many relevant tickets, licences and qualifications as possible such as white card, working at
    heights, confined space, high risk licence and so forth.
•   Generally, employers in mining, logistics and the heavy industry sectors do not make offers of
    employment based only on a resume. The recruitment process often involves face-to-face interviews,
    pre-employment medicals, police checks, reference checking and, in some cases, psychometric testing or
    suitability profiling.
•   Applicants often state in their application, ‘I am prepared to relocate depending on job offer and
    remuneration’. If the role is semi-skilled or entry level, the employer will usually expect applicants to be
    available for interview at short notice. However, this does not guarantee a job.
•   If you are keen to secure a job in or around the Karratha region, we recommend you visit this great
    town, obtain temporary accommodation, and work towards securing a job before you settle in
    permanently. If you are reliable and hardworking, it could be one of the best decisions you make.
