What is Trades Academy? Wellington Trades Academy partners with local secondary schools, WelTec and Whitireia to provide year-long training programmes that allow you to achieve NCEA Level 2 credits and get ready for employment or higher-level studies. How you’ll benefit Trades Academy makes a positive difference to your education and can be a great move for your future career. There are many advantages of enrolling for Trades Academy: > Productively use your time. Learn career based skills while achieving NCEA Level 2 > Stay enrolled at school and continue to participate in extra- curricular activities you enjoy like sport, music and cultural events > Allows you to make new friends and keep in touch with your school mates > Check out tertiary learning. See how it’s different and if it’s a good choice for you > There are lots of different subjects you can choose from > Sample a career path. Wellington Trades Academy IN TR O D U CTO RY A N I M A L C A R E Petone Learn to look after animals in this introductory course and get an Level 2 44 Credits insight into working in the animal care industry. You’ll study animal anatomy and physiology and ethical issues around animals. Learn to care for dogs and fish, along with how to transport a range of animals, and even beekeeping! After doing this course you can go on to further study in this field. 8
Choices BU S IN ESS A D M INIST R AT I O N Petone Learn skills that could set you up for a career in Business. Use Level 2 42 Credits spreadsheets, word processing and other modern computer applications. Complete research exercises and create your own professional CV. 9
Wellington Trades Academy CONST RU C T IO N T R A DE S Petone and Porirua Gain introductory skills to start working in the construction industry. Level 2 44 Credits You’ll learn how to use hand and power tools, understand project planning and Health and Safety, plus learn skills in painting, glazing and plumbing. The programme will prepare you for entry-level roles in carpentry or other trades (bricklaying, paving and landscaping, painting and decorating, electrical, plumbing and plastering), or you might decide to keep building on your skills and do further training. 10

Gain insight into working with Level 2 44 Credits clients, developing ideas, and presenting work. Get hands-on with gear, different creative applications and cameras. In this Level 2 46 Credits programme, you’ll learn all the theory and put it into practice on practical projects. You’ll cover different areas from auto electrical to metal work and welding, steering and suspension to vehicle servicing, engine operation to wheels and tyres. 13
Wellington Trades Academy EN G INE S Porirua This programme provides knowledge and practice of working safely Level 2 45 Credits in the motor industry. Gain practical hands-on skills and knowledge in disassembly, reassembly and tuning of engines, vehicle servicing, brake bleeding and wheel balancing. Learn to use an electrical multimeter to test basic automotive electrical systems. 14
Choices INTRODU C T IO N TO SP O RT A N D F I T N E S S Petone Want to work in the fitness industry? You’ll learn about working Level 2 44 Credits in a fitness environment and how to coach a client, plus you’ll develop your knowledge of anatomy, nutrition and the correct use of gym equipment. Your study will be largely based in the gym and you’ll learn hands-on. Master ropes courses, rock climbing and experience adventure based learning. 15

Choices HEALTH S CIE NC E Porirua This programme provides hands-on learning in science and health. Level 2 20 Credits Students will gain knowledge and skills through practical experience in our laboratory and simulation training suites. Some work placements and industry visits are included in this programme. 1 day per week Thursday only 17
Wellington Trades Academy HO S P ITA LIT Y Petone Begin your career in the hospitality industry. You’ll learn basic Level 2 44 Credits culinary skills and methods of cookery. You will also learn valuable front-of-house skills and knowledge, such as restaurant service and how to set up and service a function. The programme is very hands-on and you will gain the necessary skills to progress further in this industry. 18

Learn the Level 2 44 Credits art of making a good coffee and cooking skills that can be used in a café environment. Choices DUALPATHWAYS DualPathways is an initiative where we work with Secondary Schools to offer different learning opportunities at Level 3. Our programmes allow you to connect with tertiary learning and employment opportunities. How to enrol Entry criteria You should have at least 60 credits at NCEA Level 1 including literacy and numeracy. Application for special entry may be considered for students who hold fewer than the recommended NCEA credits.
