Course Selection • The course planning handout is like a contract • Schools are staffed and time-tabled according to the information on these forms • Only those courses with a sufficient number of students registered will be available • Please consider your choices carefully now as there is little flexibility in September

Graduation Checklist •Students must have a minimum of 80 credits to graduate •1 course = 4 credits •Grade 12 students must be enrolled in at least 6 courses to be eligible for LB Scholarships •A 2nd language is not a requirement for graduation •Grade 12’s must complete Numeracy Assessment •Grade 12’s must complete Literacy Assessment – Exempt for you •Grade 12’s must complete CLC and Capstone •Most Canadian universities require a minimum of 6 academic Grade 12 courses

Course Selection KEEP IN MIND: • Online courses - for university admission online courses must be completed by February 1. • Repeated classes – cannot repeat at LB, upgrade online or summer school, highest mark is reflected on transcript
Course Selection • Dropping courses (asking for different teachers) is problematic • If you don’t like your mark, ask for help • Rigour (sticking with it) counts • You need good marks to get into university but, you also need the skills to stay there
Grade 12 Math Choices 1. Pre-Calculus 12 2. Calculus 12 3. AP Calculus 12 4. Statistics 12 5. AP Statistics 12 • Pre-Calculus 12 and Calculus 12 may be done concurrently • Pre-Calculus 12 must be done before AP Calculus • Many Business programs like students to have Calculus 12
Grade 12 Science Choices • Biology 12 (Anatomy and Physiology 12) • Chemistry 12 • Physics 12 • Students may take more than one Science • Chemistry and Physics are required for most Science or Engineering programs • Students may take Anatomy and Physiology 12 without taking Life Sciences 11 but NOT RECOMMENDED!

Grade 12 Electives • You can choose Grade 10,11 or 12 electives • A 2nd science or a language will take an elective space • Grade 12 students must take a minimum of 6 courses • Choose courses that will meet the post-secondary requirements for your program of choice • Add in electives of interest

Language Electives • French 11,12 • Spanish 11,12 • Japanese 11, 12 ** A 2nd language is not required for graduation. ** ELL students may be eligible for a Language 10, 11, 12 credit.
University Second Language Requirements • UBC requires a language 11 • SFU requires a beginner language 11 • UVIC does not require a 2nd language **Check specific university requirements
SDC or Skills Class • Skills 12 – for students who require additional support for their learning. • No credit • Often students in Skills have an IEP
Electives: Off Timetable &/or require Applications • Community Service Gr 11 (social media and computer skills recommended, does not count for honour roll) • Work Experience: Requires separate application with Ms. K. Whelan • Peer Tutoring 12: Requires teacher recommendation (does not count for honour roll) • Peer Counselling 12 (requires application – in April)
Getting more Credits – Application Required • Advanced Placement (AP): @ Byng - Calculus, English (AP exam prep), French, Statistics & Computer Science • External Credits: Ministry Approved Organizations (examples: BC Conservatory of Music, Canadian Forces, Red Cross, Duke of Edinburgh, Girl Guides, Outward Bound, Rock School…) • Language Challenge: Register in Oct/Nov 2020 Full day exam in Jan/Feb 2021 ($50 fee) Language requirement met – French, Korean, Japanese, Mandarin, Punjabi, Spanish **(can’t use for admission calculations for UBC)

Withdrawals and Repeats • No record on school transcripts first 4 weeks • Term 1 and 2 = W + date/ Term 3 = W + date + mark • Repeats: • UBC/Uvic/SFU use the highest of the repeat • Queens uses the most recent • McGill averages and looks at both grades • U of T Commerce & Engineering NO repeats • U of T use highest mark with exceptions
ELL Students • ELL teachers will advise Counsellors on your required ELL classes • Assessments in May and September will determine your placement • Sign up for courses as though you are moving into the next level • Need EN 10, 11, and 12 credits to graduate!
The Extras In School vs Online vs Summer School • Summer school (info. in April) • Remedial 2 hrs/day 4 weeks – 40-49% (maximum grade 67%) • Completion 3.5 hrs/day 6 weeks • Preview 2 hrs/day 4 weeks • Online/Summer – do not count for Honour Roll. The following courses are also not included in honour roll: Community Service, Peer Tutoring, Career Life Education, Career Life Connections & Capstone • Honour Roll/Principal’s List: Grade 8-11 best 7, Grade 12 best 6 • Gr 12 students are given priority for Gr 12 courses and Gr 11 courses required for graduation
Post –Secondary Information • Please check out admissions requirements for different programs and schools by googling the school and admission requirements • Students/families are to research these!!! ** Impossible to know every institution/program ** Be realistic and don't take every single course you could ever need for every single program and university – this is virtually impossible
Post –Secondary Information • Most universities outside of BC don’t require a second language in Grade 11 • Most universities require a personal profile • Some universities will admit on Grade 11 marks

Post – Secondary Information • Some universities are looking at your grade 11 marks • US institutions (Gr 8 -12) • Many institutions are looking at whole student profile not just marks, in some cases, accepting students 10% below other students based on other criteria. • Broad-Based Application (grades and written reflection of connections, learning experiences/challenges and personal experiences)
UBC, SFU + Others: Holistic Admissions Approach • Looking at Grade 11 & Grade 12 marks + overall average • Looking for senior courses relevant to program of interest • Looking at core average relevant to the program • Minimum grade thresholds on key courses critical to program Ex. Pre- Calc 12 for Science • MINIMUM 6 Grade 12 marks for overall average (UBC) • MIN. 5 (SFU) • Personal profile + academic path reasoning
