Grace Kibuule, LEAD Scholar LEAD gives students the opportunity to fulfill their dreams at a top university with a diverse community. BACKGROUND Diversity is a valuable element of U-M excellence. After a drop in diversity of U-M’s 2007 incoming class, the Alumni Association board of directors established the LEAD Scholars program to ensure that the U-M community of Leaders and Best remains vibrant and intellectually stimulating. LEAD grants four-year financial scholarships to admitted students with community support from fellow scholars, staff, university resources, past scholars, alumni and friends dedicated to building the next generation of Wolverines. Beginning in 2008, 22 students were awarded LEAD Scholarships up to $10,000 per year on the Ann Arbor campus. Since then approximately 30 students join the LEAD community each year. In 2010, the Alumni Association also began awarding LEAD Scholarships to one incoming student at UM-Flint and one at UM-Dearborn each year. In 2012, 100% of the first LEAD cohort graduated from the University of Michigan. 4 5
