ISSUE 10 EDITOR: ETHAN EVERETT MARCH 5, 2021 At The Grove All YOU need to know about Lowe's Grove Middle In This Issue Teacher Spotlight Conversation with the counselor Women's History Month Message from Vice Principal Redfearn Student of the Week Hello, my name is Cornelius Redfearn, and I am in my 3rd year as an assistant principal here at Lowe's Grove Middle School. I spent much of my educational career in elementary, but I truly enjoyed learning the middle school model. I have missed the day-to-day, face-to- face interaction with our students and staff, so I am excited about the opportunity to return to in-person learning to have once again a more personal connections with our school community. Of course, in a safe manner. 01 GROVE | ISSUE 10
I have been coming to the school building since the pandemic and it has been just that, a building. With the anticipation of in-person leaning the building is slowly becoming a school once again. More teachers and staff are coming to the building. The school grounds are getting the attention it has long deserved and all we need now are our Lowe's Grove students to make it complete. Continue to take care yourself and your family and I am looking forward to seeing those who plan to return for in-person-learning soon. C. Redfearn Healthy Habits w/ Coach Garner Q1: What are some common myths about men’s health? Men do suffer from mental and emotional health issues. Men CAN develop breast cancer. Women tolerate pain better than men. Q2: What are some mistakes men tend to do when they eat? 1. Not drinking enough water before and with meals. Proper hydration is a critical component of a well-balanced diet. 2. Eating too fast. Not rushing your way through a meal allows your body to “full” longer. Q3: When children are young they tend to eat a lot. What type of food should men eat to stay healthy? Fresh vegetables and fruit should be a staple in everyone’s diet. Lean sources of protein (Salmon, Chicken). Avoid processed foods as much as possible. Enjoy processed foods in moderation when you do eat them. Q4: What should men do to keep them motivated about working out? Don’t take good health for granted ever. It’s cheaper to prevent a surgery than pay for one. Conversation with a Counslor INTERVIEW: WAYNE JORDAN & MR. HAMER Do you feel like students understand the importance of being prepared? I’m not quite sure if our scholars really understand the importance of being prepared. Our scholar’s return to school for in-person learning will be accompanied with a set of safety guidelines provided to keep everyone protected, and I’m optimistic about the opportunity for them to thrive in what we now call the “new norm”. I believe that it’s imperative that our scholars understand the importance of being prepared because it leads to less stress in class as well as staying safe. If no preparation is made, then the scholars will experience feelings of anxiety. On the other hand, if our scholars complete his/her assignments, read the material, and understand the material, they will be able to focus on better grades and their health. What tools can you recommend students use to help get better prepared? First thing that I think is important is for parents to have a conversation with his/her scholar about precautions they need to take at school so they can remain safe and healthy. Scholars should: a. Prepare to wash and sanitize their hands often. b. Make sure you keep a safe physical distance from other scholars. c. Wear a mask at all times. d. Avoid sharing objects with other students, including water bottles, devices, writing instruments, and books. e. Equip yourself with hand sanitizer (that contains at least 60% alcohol.) Make sure your product is safe. Can you tell me about your experiences getting prepared for tests? Everyone is their own individual with different ways to prepare for a test. My preparation for a test was a little unorthodox because I couldn’t study in silence, so I listened to Jazz. I took naps when I felt a little tired, I ate snacks that were rich in protein, and I asked questions when I didn’t understand some of the information in the class. 06 GROVE | ISSUE 10
How should students prepare for upcoming tests and projects? I think these are some essentials: 1. Eat healthy meals and snacks 2. Exercise regularly 3. Get plenty of rest 4. Manage your stress 5. Talk with your School Counselors or Teachers 6. Utilize your class and study time wisely 7. Establish effective studying and homework habits. SHOUT OUT!
