PARKCREST CHILDREN’S CENTRE PRESCHOOL NEWSLETTER Website: www.parkcrestchildcaresociety.ca Email: info@parkcrestchildcaresociety.ca 604-294-6224 FEBRUARY 2021 Last month went by really fast! We explored weather changes, winter clothing, how to stay warm, winter animals and hibernation. The children learned a new song called, ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.” Ask them to sing it or find it online! This month we will begin learning about Community Helpers and the role they play in our great community. We could not be more grateful for our Nurses and Doctors, especially right now! Over the next few weeks we will explore Community Helpers through role play, stories and discussions. We will start of the theme by learning about what community helpers are, where we can find them and the role they play in our everyday life. The children will lead each other in discussions and art projects. Perhaps they will create a post office, or maybe a restaurant. This will be a great time for us to collect magazines, and appliance boxes that families no longer need. Since the Seismic upgrade is in progress, we hope the children will lead us to exploring areas in construction and transportation. The trucks and workers have sparked a lot of interest and we hope this becomes a ‘hot topic.’ Since February supports Pink Shirt Day, we thought it would be a great idea to focus on kindness. Every time the teachers see the children showing acts of kindness, they will get a heart added to our ‘kindness jar.’ This heart will include the child’s name and the act of kindness they showed. We will be encouraging all children to participate. February will bring the children a lot of excitement as we will have a special day each week!
Feb. 4 & 5 - Wacky Hair Day: Children can come to preschool with hair like never seen before! Feb. 11 & 12 - Valentine’s Party: Children can wear red or pink! We will celebrate with parachute games and freeze dance. You are welcome to send a small token of love such as cards, pencils, stickers, playdough or a small pre-packaged nut- free/tree nut free treat. There are 20 children in the class! Feb. 16 & 17 - Family Day: Families are asked to provide their child with a photo of them and the people they live with. It can be a vacation photo or a photo of an event they remember. Send it in a Ziploc bag to keep it safe! Feb. 18 & 19 - Show & Tell: Children can bring one special item from home to share with friends during circle time. The item should be able to fit in their backpack. Talk about this special item at home so they are comfortable sharing with peers. Feb. 24 & 25 – Backwards day: wear your clothes, backpacks, caps and whatever else you can think of, BACKWARDS! We will be mixing things up in the classroom as well! ILLNESS We are reminding families to be vigilant and keep their child/children home when they are sick. Bringing a sick child to school allows for the spread of germs and puts other children at risk of getting sick. Please notify the teachers of any absences. We thank you for your cooperation. Please continue to assess your child daily for symptoms such as sore throat, cough, fever, headache, difficulty breathing, vomiting or diarrhea. PARKING We continue to urge all parents/guardians to follow the ‘no stopping’ and ‘no parking’ signs at ALL TIMES. We understand that you may sometimes be in a rush, but this leads to a lot of frustrated families. Please give yourself enough time to park and drop off correctly and AVOID ALL U-TURNS! Weather Notice from Burnaby School District With winter weather here, we want to remind you about how the Burnaby School District shares weather- related school closures. We do our best to keep schools OPEN unless there is heavy snowfall, damage, or other circumstances – such as a power outage – that make it impossible to open for instruction. If we
do need to close schools please note that all preschools and childcare programs in schools and on school grounds also need to close (as per the Occupancy Agreements). Please inform your families of possible weather-related school closures and encourage them to listen to local news stations (online, radio, and TV), some of which are: CBC AM 690 radio Global TV CKNW AM 980 radio CityNews News AM 1130 radio CBC TV Fairchild AM 1470 radio CTV BC Please feel free to visit https://burnabyschools.ca/reminder-winter-weather-procedures/ for more information.
