A Message from our Pastor Dear Parishioners, The following is a poem by Jane Kenyon, who was New Hampshire’s poet laureate in 1995. Walking Alone in the Late Winter How long the winter has lasted – like a Mahler symphony, or an hour in the dentist’s chair. In the fields the grasses are matted and gray, making me think of June, when hay and vetch burgeon in the heat, and warm rain swells the globed buds of the peony. Ice on the pond breaks into huge planes. One sticks like a barge gone away at the neck of the bridge…The reeds and shrubby brush along the shore gleam with ice that shatters when breeze moves them. From beyond the bog the sound of water rushing over trees felled by the zealous beavers, who bring them crashing down….Sometimes it seems they do it just for fun. Those days of anger and remorse come back to me; you fidgeting with your ring, sliding it off, then jabbing it on again. The wind is keen coming over the ice; it carries the sound of breaking glass. And the sun, bright but not warm, has gone behind the hill. Chill, or the fear of chill, sends me hurrying home. I believe Ms. Kenyon captures the mood of many people at this time of year, when winter seems to have worn out its welcome and is good for nothing more than surfacing painful experiences from our past, as it does for her – memories … those days of anger and remorse. Perhaps this is not a bad thing, however. Perhaps this is how the lingering days of this harsh and barren season can help us to enter into Lent, which begins on March 2. If the word Lent means “springtime,” and springtime is about new life, particularly the new life of Easter, these final days of winter (which are also within the Lenten season) might serve us well precisely by surfacing some of those bleak and painful memories from our past that still haunt us for whatever reason. Bringing these to light might be the opportunity we need to rid ourselves of them once and for all in order to make room for the experience of new life. The discipline of Lent, with its call to conversion and change of heart, is most profitable if we do the hard work of examining our lives. Self- examination demands courageous honesty so that it can be a catalyst for growth and not merely an exercise of selective remembering. As we allow the ice on the pond of our lives to break into planes so that the sound of rushing water might be heard again, we make ourselves ready for that sun, which at this time is bright but not warm, in the words of our poet. The sun’s warmth will fill us at Easter when, in the boldest proclamation that human February 20, 2022 Page 2
beings have ever made, we rejoice in the victory of life over death, first experienced in Jesus and now promised to us. Why not take advantage of winter’s last hurrah, and make our hearts ready to welcome the springtime of new life that foreshadows the Eternal Life of God, already making inroads into our world. Blessings, A Request for Sewing Help from Fr. Gabriel From time to time, I am in need of some light sewing, for example, the Schedule for Ash Wednesday repair of vestments or the March 2, 2022 mending of cloths. It would be helpful to have several people Masses with Distribution of Ashes: willing to help with sewing, so as not to have 8:15am and 7:00pm to rely on the same person each time. From the Parish Nurse Sleep and Heart Health Along with diet and exercise, good sleep is crucial when it comes to heart health. The reverse is also true: the same lifestyle measures that reduce the risk of heart disease promote good sleep. How does sleep affect heart health? Studies show that short sleep duration or poor sleep quality are associated with high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol levels. Habitual short sleep increases the chance of heart attack, stroke, or cardiac arrest. Not getting enough restful sleep is also correlated with: *Poor diet/weight gain *Stroke, heart attack and death *Diabetes *High blood sugar associated with diabetes *Inflammation People with common sleeping disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea or insomnia also are far more likely to have heart arrhythmias, plaque buildup, heart failure and coronary artery disease than the general public. In most people, blood pressure dips during sleep. However, that doesn’t always happen in people with Type 1 narcolepsy. Although more research is needed in this area, some suggest that this may increase the risk for heart problems. Lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise may reduce the risk of heart disease, both directly and indirectly, by fostering better sleep. This, in turn, may lead to a better outlook and more energy – the very best kind of feedback loop. What should I do if I have problems sleeping? The CDC advises people to: *Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, weekends included. (My body clock wakes me up at 5:30 am no matter what day it is!) *Sleep in a dark, quiet place set at a comfortable temperature. We sleep better in cooler room temperatures. *Ban electronic devices from the bedroom. These can interfere with sleep. *Avoid caffeine, alcohol and large meals before hitting the pillow. These stimulants will keep you awake. *Exercise. Physical activity during the day makes it easier to fall asleep at night. Talk with your doctor or health care professional if you have symptoms of a sleep disorder or have tried such measures and still can’t get to sleep. Feel free to contact Kathy Ford RN, Parish Nurse, for health referrals and questions. She is here for you! Kathy can be reached at 630-353-4526 or kford@sjalisle.org. February 20, 2022 Page 8
