SOLEMNITY OF THE ASCENSION – Today we celebrate the beautiful Solemnity of Our Lord’s glorious Ascension into heaven following his Resurrection. Next Sunday brings the Solemnity of Pentecost which ends the Easter season. CONGRATULATIONS! – Yesterday we had two beautiful Masses of First Holy Communion for the children in our Religious Education Program. There will be two more of these Masses on May 29th. Next Saturday, May 22nd we will have our Confirmation Mass with Bishop David O'Connell officiating as the Confirming Prelate. We congratulate all of our children! MONTH OF MARY – During this month of May we especially honor our Blessed Mother Mary. This past week we had the ceremony of crowning the image of Our Lady and we renewed our consecration to her Immaculate Heart. I encourage you to pray the rosary daily but especially during this month of Mary. I recommend this website: www.rosarycenter.org for resources on praying the rosary. At each of our First Communion Masses, each child received the brown scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and was invested with it. I think most of us received the scapular on the day of our First Holy Communion. This is a wonderful time to renew our devotion to her and wear her scapular as a reminder of it. RETURN TO IN-PERSON MEETINGS – We have been notified that in-person meetings of all our parish organizations are once again permitted as we are now well into the "yellow tier" of reopening of the state. This means that our various parish organizations can once again start scheduling meetings as usual. Ordinarily we do not have many meetings in July or August so they may want to take advantage of the rest of May and June and renew their bonds of friendship and apostolate. Due to the shutdown of all meetings for the long period since March of 2020 until now, the schedules of the parish have changed. The various groups should reserve their desired meeting days and times with the Pastoral Center staff before notifying members of any meetings. LIFTING OF VARIOUS RESTRICTIONS – Due to the dramatic drop in coronavirus infections in our state and the high vaccination rate, various restrictions are slowly being lifted. As you may have noticed, the Holy Water fonts are once again full of holy water. The missalettes and chant cards have also returned to the pews. According to the CDC guidelines these things do not transmit the coronavirus. (Too bad they only figured it out now after a year of being deprived of these!) Our confessionals are also back in use for Confession. In fact, all four of our Confessionals are now available since they were all renovated last year during the pandemic shut down. They are now in conformity with the privacy requirements of canon law as well as with new ventilation systems. Frequent Confession is recommended for all.
MASSES ONLINE – The livestream service which we started last year at the beginning of the pandemic has served us very well. This was especially true during the total lockdown imposed by Governor Newsom in March of 2020. Thankfully, we were able to transmit our Masses with no break from the first weekend of shut down until now. Almost all of our parishioners have now returned to regular in-person assistance at Mass. There are a few who are awaiting their vaccines and thus not yet able to join us. To reach out to them we are still livestreaming our Sunday Masses at 9:30 a.m. in English and 11:00 a.m. in Spanish. We will continue this for the month of May and, possibly, first two weeks of June. After that they will be discontinued since that service will no longer be necessary. Please check for the links on our parish website: www. standrewpasadena.org. FUNERAL PLANNING – With fairly regular frequency we have situations of persons dying without having made any sort of funeral plans. This presents a real burden to the family left behind as they try to ascertain the person’s wishes regarding the funeral. I would encourage you, no matter your age, to have a Will and to also have some written instructions regarding your wishes for your funeral. It is a great help to the surviving family members. When I was ordained, we were all required to submit to the Archdiocese a copy of our Last Will and Testament and our funeral plans. I thought it was somewhat odd at the time, but now I recognize the wisdom of it and I’m glad that I did it. In your Will I also hope you remember St. Andrew Parish. Our parish, like many others, relies of the bequests of its faithful parishioners in order to have long term financial security. Frequently substantial donations which are left by parishioners to the parish upon their death are the funds used for major projects in parishes. These bequests speak of the person’s love for their parish over the years and their desire to leave a legacy for others. In Christ and St. Andrew, Father Gonzalez DID YOU KNOW?
