The Painesville United Methodist Church February 13, 2022 “Built on the Rock” “The Greatest of All Time” Matthew 16:13-20 Dear Friends, On this day when we celebrate this national holiday known as Super Bowl Sunday, I should not hesitate to admit that I watch football pretty closely, especially when the playoffs come. The playoff games this year have been particularly amazing. While I am a loyal Browns fan, I have to admit I am rooting for Cincinnati for several reasons, mostly having to do with family. Both my Mom and my Dad grew up in Cincinnati, my Dad until he was 8 years old and my Mom throughout most of her childhood. My Grandpa Schubert was a graduate in engineering from the University of Cincinnati and all three Winkler children graduated from UC. So there are deep ties. I also am rooting for them because at the beginning of the season, Cincinnati had a 200-1 chance of playing in the Super Bowl this year. How amazing that they are in the Super Bowl, the underdog but with a chance of winning. Sports often reveals the amazing stories of underdogs surviving and thriving in the sports context. For example, sports columnist Sally Jenkins wrote an article on Tom Brady titled, “On Paper, Tom Brady was unremarkable.” Whether we like Tom Brady or not, we all have to say that his career has been remarkable. At the beginning, Tom Brady was overlooked and undervalued. He was drafted in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL draft, 199th overall. The scouting report will be remembered as one of the most famous misjudgments ever made, much like Fred Astaire who was described by the talent scout this way: “Can’t act; slightly bald; can dance a little.” Brady was described this way by the scout: “Skinny. Lacks great physical stature and arm strength. Lacks mobility and the ability to avoid the rush. Lacks a really strong arm. Can’t drive the ball down the field. Does not throw a really tight spiral. System-type player who can get exposed if forced to ad-lib.” Well, it is not like the description is totally inaccurate. It is just that the description left out some of the most important details about Tom Brady’s character. At every stage of his career he labored to overcome his major physical deficits. He did so with an “all-in” competitive commitment to every part of his game and sheer determination. In his retirement announcement Brady said, “I have always believed the sport of football is an ‘all-in’ proposition – if a 100% competitive commitment isn’t there, you won’t succeed … There is a physical, mental, and emotional challenge every single day that has allowed me to maximize my highest potential. And I have tried my very best these past 22 years. There are no shortcuts on the field or in life.” Now Tom Brady is the G.O.A.T. – deserving the football brand, Greatest of All Time. We could describe Peter as overlooked and undervalued and altogether unremarkable. Until he met Jesus. Then he went “all-in.” When Peter exclaimed, “You are Christ, the Son of the living God” he heard Jesus say, “Blessed are you, Simon bar Jonah!” And Jesus – the One who really is “The Greatest of All Time” – went on to say that Peter is the Rock upon which the church will be built. Jim Winkler, Pastor “BUILT ON THE ROCK” MATTHEW 16:13-20 Theme for the Season of Epiphany: On Earth As It Is In Heaven He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it “(Matthew 16:15-18). “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold” (Psalm 18:2). 1. The Greatest of All Time – Tom Brady, “all in” 2. The Question – Who do you say I am? 3. Upon this Rock 4. The Gates of Hades 5. The Greatest of All Time – Jesus Christ Don't you get me wrong, I only want to know Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ Who are you? What have you sacrificed? Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ Who are you? What have you sacrificed? Jesus Christ Superstar Do you think you're what they say you are? Jesus Christ Superstar Do you think you're what they say you are? (lyrics to Jesus Christ Superstar)
Painesville UMC Sixth Sunday after Epiphany February 13, 2022 * Psalter Reading Psalm 96 with sung response UMH #815 RESPONSE (sung): THE LORD COMES, THE LORD COMES, AND ALL CREATION SINGS FOR JOY. Leader: O sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth! People: Sing to the Lord, bless God’s name; proclaim God’s salvation from day to day. Leader: Declare the Lord’s glory among the nations; the Lord’s marvelous works among all the peoples! People: For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised, to be feared above all gods. Leader: For all the gods of the peoples are idols; but the Lord made the heavens. People; Honor and majesty are before the Lord in whose sanctuary are strength and beauty. RESPONSE (sung): THE LORD COMES, THE LORD COMES, AND ALL CREATION SINGS FOR JOY. • Hymn of Praise “My Hope Is Built” UMH# 368 1. My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness. I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus’ name . REFRAIN REFRAIN: On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand; all other ground is sinking sand. 2. When darkness veils his loving face, I rest on his unchanging grace. In every high and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the veil. REFRAIN 3. His oath, his covenant, his blood support me in the whelming flood. When all around my soul gives way, he then is all my hope and stay. REFRAIN 4. When he shall come with trumpet sound, O may I then in him be found! Dressed in his righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne! REFRAIN SCRIPTURE LESSON: Matthew 16: 13-20 Song of Praise “Shout to the Lord” FWS # 2074 My Jesus, my Savior, Lord there is none like You. All of my days, I want to praise the wonders of your might love. My comfort, my shelter, tower of refuge and strength. Let every breath, all that I am never cease to worship you. REFRAIN (sing twice): Shout to the Lord, all the earth, let us sing power and majesty, praise to the King. Mountains bow down and the seas will roar at the sound of your name. I sing for joy at the work of your hands, forever I’ll love you, forever I’ll stand, Nothing compares to the promise I have in you. (repeat refrain once more)
• Doxology “Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow” UMH #94 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures here below; Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise God, the source of all our gifts! Praise Jesus Christ, whose power uplifts! Praise the Spirit, Holy Spirit! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! • Hymn of Dedications “I Love to Tell the Story” UMH #156 1. I love to tell the story of unseen things above, of Jesus and his glory, of Jesus and his love. I love to tell the story, because I know ‘tis true; it satisfies my longings as nothing else will do. REFRAIN: I love to tell the story, ‘twill be my theme in glory, To tell the old, old story of Jesus and his love. 2. I love to tell the story; more wonderful it seems than all the golden fancies of all our golden dreams. I love to tell the story, it did so much for me; and that is just the reason I tell it now to thee. REFRAIN 3. I love to tell the story; ‘tis pleasant to repeat what seems, each time I tell it, more wonderfully sweet. I love to tell the story, for some have never heard the message of salvation from God’s own holy Word. REFRAIN 4. I love to tell the story, for those who know it best seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest. And when, in scenes of glory, I sing the new, new song, ‘twill be the old, old story that I have loved so long. REFRAIN
