Page Two June 28, 2020 Daily Masses have returned! MONDAY, WEDNESDAY & FRIDAY AT 9:00AM TUESDAY, THURSDAY & SATURDAY AT 7:30AM * Please remember to bring your mask, Sign in at the door. Mass in the church only. CHRISTIAN HOSPITALITY Day in and day out, we are required to make judgment calls informed by tough, durable, serviceable Christian love. We do what we can do, and God takes notice. God is in charge of rewards, and a glass of water will do when that is what we have to offer with a glad and open heart. Paul gives us a clear theology for the missionary work we do whenever anybody is close at hand. He reminds us that our work, our ministry, is carried on in concert with Christ. We have been baptized into his death and life. In any given moment both life and death are there, a kind of play of shadow and light. Sometimes it’s difficult to tell where shadow leaves off and light begins. God will take care of that, too. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. SAINT JUNÍPERO SERRA (1713-1784) July 1 No one who has stood before the quiet majesty of Mission San Juan Capistrano, or the altogether different but no less lovely Mission Dolores in San Francisco, or any of the missions from San Diego to Sonoma can fail to bless the Franciscan padre who, while not founder of each, was inspiration for them all, Saint Junípero Serra. Abandoning the comfortable academic life to which his doctorate in theology entitled him, Serra journeyed to the New World where his tireless traveling, dramatic preaching, and penitential austerity converted thousands of native peoples. Saving souls and celebrating the sacraments were Padre Serra’s primary mission but not his only one. Education in letters and crafts, trades and agriculture transformed the people, while roads and irrigation systems transfigured the landscape. His more than thirty years of ministry were not free from conflict with authorities or without controversy in the retrospectively critical eye of history. But when John Paul II beatified him in 1988, he praised Padre Serra for assisting his converts to use their new faith to advance their true human development. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time SAINTS Think of yourselves as dead to sin AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES and living for God in Christ Jesus. Sunday: Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: Ss. Peter and Paul, Apostles Tuesday: The First Martyrs of the Holy Roman Church — Romans 6:11 Wednesday: St. Junípero Serra; Canada Day Friday: St. Thomas; First Friday Saturday: Independence Day; First Saturday; TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today is an exceptional event on our calendar: the regular Sunday of Ordinary Time is eclipsed by a solemnity honoring two saints who didn’t spend much time together in their earthly ministry, and who have distinct feasts so they probably don’t mind sharing this one. Yet each suffered a similar fate in the same city, Rome, during the persecution of the Emperor Nero. Nero probably ordered the destruction of many of the residential neighborhoods in service to his building projects, and when the homeless began to look for someone to blame for the fires, Nero targeted the Christians. Soon, Peter was crucified, upside down, on the Vatican hill. Excavations (called scavi) under the Vatican basilica have proven the authenticity of his burial place near the place of his death. Paul, a Roman citizen, was later granted a swifter execution by sword, and is remembered at a vast basilica on the city’s outskirts. Peter and Paul were just about polar opposites. Peter rough and ready, Paul poetic and polished. Peter carried a burden of regret for his denials, Paul had his own issues with which he struggled. Peter leapt over barriers to go to the Gentiles, Paul strove with and surrendered to the same call. True, they spent very little time together in this life, but the same Spirit filled their hearts and by their witness changed the face of the earth. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Page Four HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As Independence Day draws near, we think of the men and women of the military who serve with courage and competence, some far from home. How does the Church accompany them? In 1939, Pope Pius XII created an independent jurisdiction of the Catholic Church called the “Military Vicariate.” In 1985 Pope John Paul II created the “Archdiocese for Military Services, USA.” Spanning the globe and serving nearly one and a half million Roman Catholics, more than one thousand priests minister in hospitals, on military bases of all the armed forces, on ships at sea, and on the battlefield. The AMS does not ordain priests, but accepts priests on loan from religious orders and dioceses. In 1824 a Jesuit priest named Adam Marshall enlisted in the Navy and died at sea in 1825. He was assigned as a “schoolmaster,” but he sought out and ministered to Catholic sailors. Twenty years later, President Polk was worried that the war with Mexico was seen as anti-Catholic, so he recruited two Jesuit priests to serve in the army as chaplains. At the time of the Civil War, only about ten percent of Americans were Catholic. Military policies forced Catholic soldiers to attend Protestant services. The Church protested this rule, and many priests volunteered to become chaplains. Their witness and the courage of the “Nuns of the Battlefield” (several orders of sisters who assisted Civil War victims) helped temper prejudice against Catholics and pave the way for the life and ministry of this vigorous and unique archdiocese. — Rev. Page Five Dear Lord, There are young men and women far from home, called to serve their nation in time of war; sent to defend their nation in time of war; sent to defend our freedom on some distant foreign shore. We pray You keep them safe, we pray You keep them strong, we pray You send them safely home… for they have been away so long. Bless those who await their safe return. Bless those who mourn the lost. Bless those who serve this country well, no matter what the cost. Lt. Colonel, David Nowak, USAF Sgt. Justin Nolan, USMC Maj. Nicholas J. Di Guido, USMC Pvt. PRAYER INTENTIONS Lord Jesus, you healed those who were sick and cared for any who were suffering. Be with us now as we pray for all those who may be affected by the Coronavirus. That our leaders may have the humility and wisdom to enact timely policies that embody compassion for all who will suffer from the coronavirus, especially those who can least afford to deal with its effects, we pray. That we will not allow fear to rule our actions and reactions to the spread of this virus, we pray. That health-care workers and others who, because of their work, come in contact with people who are infected with this illness may be protected from its effects, we pray. That those throughout the world who have been infected may be blessed with a speedy and complete recovery, we pray. That those who have died from the Coronavirus may be raised to new life in heaven, and that their loved ones may know comfort in their grief, we pray.
