Welcome and Announcements Rev. Brian Maguire

Prelude Trumpet Tune John Stanley

Call to Worship (Psalm 69)
Leader: I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify God with thanksgiving.
People: Answer me, O Lord, for your steadfast love is good.
Leader: According to your abundant mercy, turn to me.
People: Let the oppressed see and be glad; you who seek God, let your hearts revive.
Leader: For the Lord hears the needy and does not despise those who are in bonds.
Unison: Come, let us worship the God who saves us!

Hymn 645 Sing Praise to God Who Reigns Above Mit Freuden Za

1 Sing praise to God who reigns above,
the God of all creation,
the God of power, the God of love,
the God of our salvation.
With healing balm my soul is filled,
and every faithless murmur stilled:
to God all praise and glory!

2 What God’s almighty power has made
God's gracious mercy keepeth;
by morning glow or evening shade
God's watchful eye ne'er sleepeth.
Within the kingdom of God's might,
lo! all is just and all is right:
to God all praise and glory!

3 The Lord is never far away,
but, through all grief distressing,
an ever-present help and stay,
our peace and joy and blessing,
as with a mother's tender hand
God gently leads the chosen band:
to God all praise and glory!
4 Thus all my toilsome way along
I sing aloud thy praises,
that all may hear the grateful song
my voice unwearied raises.
Be joyful in the Lord, my heart;
both soul and body, take your part:
to God all praise and glory!

Prayer of Confession (in unison)
Merciful God, we confess that we have not followed your ways or trusted your promises. We
love only those who love us; we show kindness only to those who are kind to us; we give
only when we expect to receive. We do not care for the oppressed nor comfort the outcast.
Forgive us, Lord. Fill our hearts with your selfless love. Change our lives by your matchless
grace that we may live as compassionate people...(silent confession)...Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

*Congregational Response #581 Glory Be to the Father Gloria Patri
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now,
and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen.

Passing of Christ’s Peace
Leader: The peace of Christ be with you.
    People: And also with you.

Time with Our Children Loralei Harding

Anthem Leaning on the Everlasting Arms arr. by Eric Nelson
The Chancel Choir with Nicole Dault, flute; and Kent Shin, viola

What a fellowship, what a joy divine, leaning on the everlasting arms; What a blessedness, what a
   peace is mine, leaning on the everlasting arms. Leaning, leaning, safe and secure from all alarms;
Leaning, leaning, leaning on the everlasting arms. Oh, how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way, leaning on
the everlasting arms; Oh, how bright the path grows from day to day, leaning on the everlasting arms.
Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come. What have I to dread, what have I to
fear, leaning on the everlasting arms? I have blessed peace with my Lord so near, leaning on the
everlasting, Leaning, leaning, safe and secure from all alarms; Leaning, leaning, leaning on the
everlasting arms, Leaning on the everlasting arms. Leaning.

Prayer for Illumination
Leader: Blessed are you Eternal One our God, sovereign of the world.
People: In ancient days you spoke and created your people.
Leader: Today let your Word and words come alive in us.
People: So that we can live into your story with meaning, purpose, and hope.
Leader: We ask this in the name of Jesus, our teacher. Amen.
Scripture Genesis 21:1-20

The Lord dealt with Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah as he had promised. 2Sarah
conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the time of which God had spoken to him.
3Abraham gave the name Isaac to his son whom Sarah bore him. 4And Abraham circumcised his

son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him. 5Abraham was a hundred
     years old when his son Isaac was born to him. 6Now Sarah said, “God has brought laughter for me;
that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.” 8The child grew, and
was weaned; and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.
9But Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, playing with her
son Isaac. 10So she said to Abraham, “Cast out this slave woman with her son; for the son of this
slave woman shall not inherit along with my son Isaac.” 11The matter was very distressing to Abra-
ham on account of his son. 12But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed because of the boy
and because of your slave woman; whatever Sarah says to you, do as she tells you, for it is
through Isaac that offspring shall be named for you. 13As for the son of the slave woman, I will
make a nation of him also, because he is your offspring.”

So Abraham rose early in the morning, and took bread and a skin of water, and gave it to Hagar,
     14

putting it on her shoulder, along with the child, and sent her away. And she departed, and wander-
ed about in the wilderness of Beer-sheba. 15When the water in the skin was gone, she cast the
child under one of the bushes. 16Then she went and sat down opposite him a good way off, about
the distance of a bowshot; for she said, “Do not let me look on the death of the child.” And as she
sat opposite him, she lifted up her voice and wept. 17And God heard the voice of the boy; and the
angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, and said to her, “What troubles you, Hagar? Do not be
afraid; for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is. 18Come, lift up the boy and hold him fast
with your hand, for I will make a great nation of him.” 19Then God opened her eyes and she saw a
well of water. She went, and filled the skin with water, and gave the boy a drink. 20God was with the
boy, and he grew up; he lived in the wilderness, and became an expert with the bow.

Leader: The Word of the Lord.
     People: Thanks be to God.

Sermon The Son of a Slave Woman Rev. Kelley Shin

1 For everyone born, a place at the table,
for everyone born, clean water and bread,
a shelter, a space, a safe place for growing,
for everyone born, a star overhead,

Refrain:
and God will delight when we are creators
of justice and joy, compassion and peace:
yes, God will delight when we are creators
of justice, justice and joy!
2 For woman and man, a place at the table,
revising the roles, deciding the share,
with wisdom and grace, dividing the power,
for woman and man, a system that’s fair, (Refrain)

3 For young and for old, a place at the table,
a voice to be heard, a part in the song,
the hands of a child in hands that are wrinkled,
for young and for old, the right to belong, (Refrain)

4 For just and unjust, a place at the table,
abuser, abused, with need to forgive,
in anger, in hurt, a mindset of mercy,
for just and unjust, a new way to live, (Refrain)

5 For everyone born, a place at the table,
to live without fear, and simply to be,
to work, to speak out, to witness and worship,
for everyone born, the right to be free, (Refrain)

Affirmation of Faith The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his
only son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the
third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right
hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the
dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the
forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Pastoral Prayer (concluding with the Lord’s Prayer)
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we
forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the
kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Hymn 69 I, the Lord of Sea and Sky Here I Am

1 I, the Lord of sea and sky,
I have heard my people cry.
All who dwell in dark and sin
my hand will save.
I, who made the stars of night,
I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear my light to them?
Whom shall I send?

Refrain:
Here I am, Lord.
Is it I, Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go, Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.

2 I, the Lord of snow and rain,
I have borne my people's pain.
I have wept for love of them.
They turn away.
I will break their hearts of stone,
give them hearts for love alone.
I will speak my word to them.
Whom shall I send?
(Refrain)

3 I, the Lord of wind and flame,
I will tend the poor and lame.
I will set a feast for them.
My hand will save.
Finest bread I will provide
till their hearts be satisfied.
I will give my life to them.
Whom shall I send?
(Refrain)

Nerdy Bible Notes

At the end of today’s reading Ishmael and Hagar depart from the stage of our Book but their story was just
beginning. God saved them by drawing forth a spring in the desert and that spring still flows to this day in
the community that Ishmael and Hagar founded there. The name of their little oasis town is Mecca. Just
as we look to Abraham and Isaac as the pioneers of our faith in the one true God, so do Muslims look to
Abraham and Ishmael. In our story from the book of Genesis, Ishmael lives happily ever after with God. In
their story from the sura of Abraham, Ishmael builds an altar to God with his father. That altar is the
Kabbah, the focus of the daily veneration of a billion Muslims as they recite from the first sura of the Koran
“We believe in God and that which has been revealed to us; in what was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael,
Isaac, and Jacob, and the tribes; to Moses and Jesus and the other prophets of the Lord.” (Sura 2:136).

Two sons, Isaac and Ishmael, three faiths, and one God, who bestows blessings on them all. God can’t
do that! God is supposed to take sides! You’re either with us or against us! The honest answer is we do
not know and do not need to know God’s motives. God is God and we are not. Neither the Bible nor the
Koran explain God’s interior purposes. All we can do is read and stand in awe as God loves the outsider,
the alien and blesses him as well as the child of the covenant. It should come as no surprise that a God
whose love for the outsider is so great that he would lay down his life for those who crucified him would
eagerly embrace a refugee child and his mother dying of thirst in the desert.

One person who understood this was Father Christian De Cherge. He was Trappist Monk who lived high
up in the Atlas Mountains of Algeria helping the poor Muslim villagers of the region. On May 24, 1996 a
group of terrorists broke into Father De Cherge’s monastery and beheaded him because he was a
Christian. Knowing the risks, Father De Cherge refused to leave the little village or its people. Before his
death, he wrote a short testament for whoever found him thanking God for his life and all that was in it:

My death, clearly will appear to justify those who hastily judged me naïve or idealistic . . . But
these people must realize that my most avid curiosity will then be satisfied. This is what I
shall be able to do, if God wills—immerse my gaze in that of the Father, to contemplate with
him his children of Islam, just as he sees them, all shining with the glory of Christ, the fruit of
his passion, filled with the Gift of his Spirit, whose secret joy will always be to establish
communion and to refashion the likeness, delighting in the differences. . . And you also my
friend, of my final moment who would not be aware of what you were doing. Yes, for you also
I wish this “thank you” – and this adieu – to commend you to the God whose face I see in
yours. And may we find each other happy, “good thieves” in Paradise, if it pleases God, the
Father of us both. Amen.” Father Christian de Cherge, “Last Testament,” First Things, August/September
            1996
