We welcome the Rev’d Gwenda Wells as our Preacher and Celebrant today. The Gathering of the Community Sentence Lord Jesus, open to us the scriptures; make our hearts burn within us while you speak. Luke 24:32 Opening Hymn #586 (Common Praise – Canada) Rise up, O saints of God! From vain ambitions turn; Christ rose triumphant that your hearts with nobler zeal might burn. Speak out, O saints of God! Despair engulfs earth’s frame; as heirs of God’s baptismal grace the word of hope proclaim. Rise up, O saints of God! The kingdom’s task embrace; redress sin’s cruel consequence; give justice larger place. Give heed, O saints of God! Creation cries in pain; stretch forth your hand of healing now, with love the weak sustain. Commit your hearts to seek the paths which Christ has trod, and, quickened by the Spirit’s power, rise up, O saints of God.
The Greeting Alleluia. Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Alleluia. Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. He has given us new life and hope. He has raised Jesus from the dead. God has claimed us as his own. He has brought us out of darkness. He has made us light to the world. Alleluia. Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Alleluia. Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Glory to God Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father; receive our prayer.
For you alone are the Holy One you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. O Lord my God, I cried unto thee : and thou hast healed me.
Thou, Lord, hast brought up my soul from hell : thou hast kept my life from them that go down to the pit. Sing praises unto the Lord, O ye saints of his : and give thanks unto his holy Name. For his wrath endureth but the twinkling of an eye, and in his favour is life : heaviness may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. As for me, in my prosperity I said, ‘I shall never be moved’ : thou, Lord, of thy goodness hadst made my hill so strong. But thou didst turn thy face from me : and I was troubled. Then cried I unto thee, O Lord : and gat me to my Lord right humbly. ‘What profit is there in my blood : when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust give thanks unto thee? : or shall it declare thy truth? Hear, O Lord, and have mercy upon me : Lord, be thou my helper.’ Thou hast turned my heaviness into joy : thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness; That my soul may sing of thy praise without ceasing : O Lord my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever. Homily The Rev’d Gwenda Wells – Clergy Associate, St. Matthias’. The Summary of the Law Hear the teaching of Christ:
you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. This is the first commandment. And a second is this: You shall love your neighbour as yourself. Intercessions Confession and Absolution Holy God, we confess that we do not trust You fully. We put our hope in worldly gain and in human promises, and find ourselves defeated and lost when things fall apart. You have given us a love more fully than anything we could experience in this world but we do not seek it, we do not hold on to it, and we look to our own means of assurance and security. Forgive us. Call us back to You that we may put our trust in You and not be afraid. May we hear the words so clearly as the disciples did; may we rise up, and not be afraid. In the name of Jesus, who loves us and offers us forgiveness, we pray. Amen. You are God’s Beloved; with you, God is well pleased. You are renewed and restored. You are forgiven and loved. You are a new creation in Christ, everything old has passed away; see, everything is becoming new. Go and share the good news of God’s love.
The Peace Christ is our Peace. If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation. The old has passed away: behold, everything has become new. The Peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. The Celebration of the Eucharist Hymn #84 (Common Praise - Canada) Lord, enthroned in heavenly splendour, first begotten from the dead, thou alone, our strong defender, liftest up thy people’s head. Alleluia, Jesus, true and living bread! Here our humblest homage pay we; here in loving reverence bow; here for faith’s discernment pray we, lest we fail to know thee now. Alleluia, thou art here, we ask not how. Though the lowliest form doth veil thee as of old in Bethlehem, here as there thine angels hail thee, branch and flower of Jesse's stem. Alleluia, we in worship join with them. Paschal Lamb, thine offering, finished once for all when thou wast slain, in its fullness undiminished shall forevermore remain,
alleluia, cleansing souls from every stain. Life-imparting heavenly Manna, stricken Rock with streaming side, heaven and earth with loud hosanna worship thee, the Lamb who died, alleluia, Prayer over the Gifts Creator of all, you wash away our sins in water, you give us new birth by the Spirit, and redeem us in the blood of Christ. As we celebrate the resurrection, renew your gift of life within us. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the risen Lord. Amen. The Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer IV Scottish Liturgy 1982 The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. Worship and praise belong to you, Author of all being. Your power sustains, your love restores, our broken world. You are unceasingly at work, from chaos bringing order and filling emptiness with life. Christ, raised from the dead, proclaims the dawn of hope.
He lives in us that we may walk in light. Your Spirit is fire in us, your breath is power to purge our sin and warm our hearts to love. As children of your redeeming purpose, freed by him who burst from the tomb and opened the gate of life, we offer you our praise, with angels and archangels and the whole company of heaven, singing the hymn of your unending glory: Sanctus and Benedictus Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Praise and thanksgiving be to you, Lord of all, for by the Cross eternal life is ours and death is swallowed up in victory. In the first light of Easter glory broke from the tomb and changed the women's sorrow into joy. From the Garden the mystery dawned that he whom they had loved and lost is with us now in every place for ever. Making himself known in the breaking of the bread, speaking peace to the fearful disciples, welcoming weary fishermen on the shore,
he renewed the promise of his presence and of new birth in the Spirit who sets the seal of freedom on your sons and daughters. Before he was given up to suffering and death, recalling the night of Israel's release, the night in which slaves walked free, at supper with his disciples he took bread and offered you thanks. He broke the bread, and gave it to them, saying: "Take, eat. This is my Body: it is broken for you." After supper, he took the cup, he offered you thanks, and gave it to them saying: "Drink this, all of you. This is my Blood of the new covenant; it is poured out for you, and for all, that sins may be forgiven. Do this in remembrance of me." We now obey your Son's command We recall his blessed passion and death, his glorious resurrection and ascension; and we look for the coming of his Kingdom. Made one with him, we offer you these gifts and with them ourselves a single, holy living sacrifice. Hear us, most merciful Father, and send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon this bread and this wine, that, overshadowed by his life-giving power, they may be the Body and Blood of your Son,
and we may be kindled with the fire of your love and renewed for the service of your Kingdom. Help us, who are baptised into the fellowship of Christ's Body to live and work to your praise and glory; may we grow together in unity and love until at last, in your new creation, we enter into our heritage in the company of the Virgin Mary, the apostles, and prophets, and of all our brothers and sisters living and departed. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be to you, Lord of all ages, world without end. The Lord’s Prayer And now, as Christ has taught us, we pray, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread Most merciful Lord, your love compels us to come in. Our hands were unclean, our hearts were unprepared; we were not fit even to eat the crumbs from under
your table. But you, Lord, are the God of our salvation, and share your bread with sinners. So cleanse and feed us with the precious body and blood of your Son, that he may live in us and we in him; and that we, with the whole company of Christ, may sit and eat in your kingdom. Amen. Agnus Dei Bell Mass Rupert Lang (b.1948) Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us peace. Alleluia! Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia! For those who do not have a consecrated Host, you are invited to pray one of the following. God our Father, whose Son our Jesus Christ in a wonderful Sacrament has left us a memorial of his Passion: Grant us so to venerate the sacred mysteries of his Body and Blood, that we may ever perceive within ourselves the fruit of his redemption; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. In union, O Lord with the faithful at every altar of thy Church, where the Holy Eucharist is celebrated, I desire to offer you praise and thanksgiving. I present to you my soul and body with the earnest wish that I may always be united to you. And since I can not now receive you sacramentally, I beseech you to come spiritually into my heart. I unite myself to you, and embrace you with all the affections of my soul. Let nothing ever separate you from me. May I live and die in your love. Amen. (If you desire pre-consecrated Hosts please contact the church office) Communion Hymn #337 (Common Praise - Canada) God, your glorious presence draws us to adore you, and with awe appear before you. In your holy temple
all keep mystic silence, prostrate lie with deepest reverence. You alone God we own, you our God and Saviour: praise your name for ever. In God's glorious presence hear the harps resounding! See the hosts the throne surrounding! "Holy, holy, holy," hear the hymn ascending, angels, saints, their voices blending! Bow your ear to us here: hear, O Christ, the praises that your church now raises. Fount of endless blessing, purify my spirit, trusting only in your merit. Like the holy angels who behold your splendour, may I ceaseless worship render. Let your will ever still rule your church terrestrial, as the hosts celestial. Motet O Sacrum Convivium M.A. Charpentier Prayers after Communion
Author of life divine, in the breaking of the bread we know the risen Lord. Feed us always in these mysteries, that we may show your glory to all the world. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Almighty God, giver of all good things, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the precious body and blood of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. We thank you for your love and care in assuring us of your gift of blessed life and uniting us with the company of all faithful people. Therefore, everliving God, keep us steadfast in your holy fellowship. And now we offer ourselves, all that we have and are, to serve you faithfully in the world, through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be all honour and glory, now and for ever. Amen. Concluding Hymn #385(Common Praise - Canada) Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; bow down before him, his glory proclaim; gold of obedience and incense of lowliness bring, and adore him: the Lord is his name! Low at his feet lay thy burden of carefulness; high on his heart he will bear it for thee, comfort thy sorrows, and answer thy prayerfulness, guiding thy steps as may best for thee be. Fear not to enter his courts in the slenderness of the poor wealth thou canst reckon as thine; truth in its beauty, and love in its tenderness, these are the offerings to lay on his shrine. These, though we bring them in trembling and fearfulness, he will accept for the name that is dear,
mornings of joy give for evenings of tearfulness, trust for our trembling, and hope for our fear. Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; bow down before him, his glory proclaim; gold of obedience and incense of lowliness bring, and adore him: the Lord is his name! The Blessing The God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the eternal covenant, make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well-pleasing in his sight; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. Acclamation Alleluia. Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. He has given us new life and hope by raising Jesus from the dead. God has claimed us as his own. He has brought us out of darkness. He has made us light to the world. Alleluia. Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Alleluia. The Dismissal Go in peace to love and serve the Lord, alleluia, alleluia
Thanks be to God, alleluia, alleluia. Organ Postlude Toccata in C J.S. Bach Scott Bradford writes: Bach did enjoy fame during his life — as a recitalist in his younger years. He dazzled audiences by pushing the known limits of the technical possibilities of the organ. A case in point is the virtuosic pedal solo with which I begin his popular Toccata in C . Dancing shoes are a must. With the entry of the manuals Bach touches on in exuberant style, the various colours of the related keys, coming to a satisfying final cadence in the home key of C major.
