The Cathedral Church of St. James The Eighth Sunday after Pentecost July 18, 2021 Holy Eucharist with Spiritual Communion at 11:00am The Cathedral Church of St. James Diocese of Toronto • Anglican Church of Canada
ORDER OF SERVICE Liturgical Note In the context of Christian Liturgy, Israel does not refer to the current political state, but either to the historic Hebrews of the ancient Near East or, in Christian theology, to all people who put their faith and trust in Jesus Christ. Acknowledgment of Indigenous Territory This sacred land is the territory of several Indigenous Nations – the Wendat, the Haudenosaunee, and the Anishnaabe, with special recognition to the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. We also acknowledge that we are on the shores of Niigaani-gichigami/Lake Ontario. This territory is governed by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Treaty, an agreement between the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and the Anishnaabe Confederacy to peaceably share and sustain the life of the Great Lakes. In the spirit of that Treaty we seek to place at the centre of our gatherings the values of respectful reciprocity, diversity, peace, responsibility, and mutual aid. Prelude Invocation and Verset – Fantasie Alexandre Guilmant Welcome & Announcements Hymn Awake, My Soul, and with the Sun Tune: Morning Hymn Cantor Awake, my soul, and with the sun thy daily stage of duty run; shake off dull sloth, and joyful rise to pay thy morning sacrifice. Redeem thy mis-spent time that's past, and live this day as if thy last; improve thy talent with due care; for the great day thyself prepare. Let all thy converse be sincere, thy conscience as the noon-day clear; think how all-seeing God thy ways and all thy secret thoughts surveys. Wake, and lift up thyself, my heart, and with the angels bear thy part, who all night long unwearied sing, high praise to the eternal King. Praise God, from whom all blessings flow, praise him, all creatures here below, praise him above, angelic host, praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Text: Thomas Ken; Music: François Hyppolite Barthélémon. Text and Music: Public Domain Presider The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. People And also with you. 1
Presider Almighty God, People to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Kyrie Eleison Presider Lord, have mercy upon us. People Christ, have mercy upon us. Presider Lord, have mercy upon us. Gloria New Plainsong by David Hurd Cantor Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly king, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Collect of the Day Presider Let us pray. Almighty God, your Son has opened for us a new and living way into your presence. Give us pure hearts and constant wills to worship you in spirit and in truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. People Amen. THE PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD Please be seated. The First Reading 2 Samuel 7: 1-14a Reader Now when the king was settled in his house, and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies around him, the king said to the prophet Nathan, ‘See now, I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of God stays in a tent.’ Nathan said to the king, ‘Go, do all that you have in mind; for the Lord is with you.’ But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan: Go and tell my servant David: Thus says the Lord: Are you the one to build me a house to live in? I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the 2
people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent and a tabernacle. Wherever I have moved about among all the people of Israel, did I ever speak a word with any of the tribal leaders of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built me a house of cedar?’ Now therefore thus you shall say to my servant David: Thus says the Lord of hosts: I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep to be prince over my people Israel; and I have been with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may live in their own place, and be disturbed no more; and evildoers shall afflict them no more, as formerly, from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house. When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come forth from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever. I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me. Reader The word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Psalm Please remain seated. Psalm 89: 20-37 – Tone I.1 Cantors I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him. My hand will hold him fast and my arm will make him strong. No enemy shall deceive him, nor any wicked man bring him down. I will crush his foes before him and strike down those who hate him. My faithfulness and love shall be with him, and he shall be victorious through my name. I shall make his dominion extend from the Great Sea to the River. He will say to me, ’You are my Father, my God, and the rock of my salvation’ I will make him my firstborn and higher than the kings of the earth. 3
I will keep my love for him for ever, and my covenant will stand firm for him. I will establish his line for ever and his throne as the days of heaven. If his children forsake my law and do not walk according to my judgements; If they break my statutes and do not keep my commandments; I will punish their transgressions with a rod and their iniquities with the lash; But I will not take my love from him, nor let my faithfulness prove false. I will not break my covenant, nor change what has gone out of my lips. Once for all I have sworn by my holiness: ‘I will not lie to David. His line shall endure for ever and his throne as the sun before me; It shall stand fast for evermore like the moon, the abiding witness in the sky.’” The Second Reading Ephesians 2: 11-22 Reader So then, remember that at one time you Gentiles by birth, called “the uncircumcision” by those who are called “the circumcision” – a physical circumcision made in the flesh by human hands – remember that you were at that time without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us. He has abolished the law with its commandments and ordinances, so that he might create in himself one new humanity in place of the two, thus making peace, and might reconcile both groups to God in one body through the cross, thus putting to death that hostility through it. So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father. 4
So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling place for God. Reader The word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Please stand, as you are able. Gospel Acclamation Cantor Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord; I know them and they follow me. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! The Holy Gospel Mark 6: 30-34, 53-56 Gospeller The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Gospeller The apostles gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. He said to them, “Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves. Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they hurried there on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them. As he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored the boat. When they got out of the boat, people at once recognized him, and rushed about that whole region and began to bring the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. And wherever he went, into villages or cities or farms, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged him that they might touch even the fringe of his cloak; and all who touched it were healed. Gospeller The Gospel of Christ. People Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 5
Homily The Nicene Creed Please stand, as you are able. Presider Let us confess our faith, as we say, All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the People Please remain standing. Presider Dear friends in Christ, let us pray to the Source of all Life for the Church and the world saying “Hear us, Lord of Glory”. Intercessor We pray to you, Lord. People Hear us, Lord of Glory. At the Thanksgiving for the departed: Intercessor Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord, People And let light perpetual shine upon them. Presider Loving God, you have heard the prayers of your faithful people. You know our needs before we ask and our ignorance in asking. Grant our requests as may be best for us. This we ask in the name of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. People Amen. 6
Confession and Absolution Presider Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; God welcomes sinners and invites us to this table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God’s forgiveness. Please kneel, as you are able. Presider Most merciful God, All we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen. Presider Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. People Amen. The Peace Please stand, as you are able. Presider The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you. THE CELEBRATION OF THE EUCHARIST Hymn – CP 619: Fairest Lord Jesus Tune: Crusaders’ Hymn Cantor Fairest Lord Jesus, ruler of all nature, O thou the God-head’s human son: thee will I cherish, thee will I honour, thou my soul’s glory, joy, and crown. Fair are the meadows, fairer still the woodlands, robed in the blooming garb of spring, Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer, who makes the troubled heart to sing. Fair is the sunshine, fairer still the moonlight, and fair the twinkling, starry host; Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer than all the angels heaven can boast. All fairest beauty, heavenly and earthly, wondrously, Jesus, is found in thee; none can be nearer, fairer, or dearer than thou, my Saviour, art to me. Text: Münster Gesangbuch, 1677; tr. Church Chorals and Choir Studies, 1850, alt.; Music: Melody Silesian trad.; Schlesische Volkslieder, Leipig, 1842. Text and Music: Public Domain Prayer over the Gifts Presider O God, accept our praise and thanksgiving. Help us in all we do to offer ourselves as a true and living sacrifice; through Jesus Christ the Lord. People Amen. Thanksgiving & Consecration Presider The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Presider Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give our thanks and praise. Presider We give you thanks and praise, almighty God, through your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Redeemer. He is your living Word, through whom you have created all things. 8
By the power of the Holy Spirit he took flesh of the Virgin Mary and shared our human nature. He lived and died as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. In fulfilment of your will he stretched out his hands in suffering, to bring release to those who place their hope in you; and so he won for you a holy people. He chose to bear our griefs and sorrows, and to give up his life on the cross, that he might shatter the chains of evil and death, and banish the darkness of sin and despair. By his resurrection he brings us into the light of your presence. Now with all creation we raise our voices to proclaim the glory of your name. Sanctus & Benedictus Cantor Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Please assume a posture of prayer that is appropriate – stand, sit or kneel. Presider Holy and gracious God, accept our praise, through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ; who on the night he was handed over to suffering and death, took bread and gave you thanks, saying, “Take, and eat: this is my body which is broken for you.” In the same way he took the cup, saying, “This is my blood which is shed for you. When you do this, you do it in memory of me.” Remembering, therefore, his death and resurrection, we offer you this bread and this cup, giving thanks that you have made us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. We ask you to send your Holy Spirit upon the offering of your holy Church. Gather into one all who share in these sacred mysteries, filling them with the Holy Spirit and confirming their faith in the truth, that together we may praise you and give you glory through your Servant, Jesus Christ. All glory and honour are yours, Father and Son, with the Holy Spirit in the holy Church, now and for ever. People Amen. 9
The Lord’s Prayer Presider As our Saviour taught us, let us pray, All Our Father, who art in Heaven, Hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread Presider We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All We, being many, are one body, for we all share in the one bread. Agnus Dei New Plainsong by David Hurd Cantor Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace. The Communion Presider The gifts of God for the People of God. People Thanks be to God. Prayer for Spiritual Communion Presider Those wishing to do so may make their spiritual communion by joining in this prayer with me now: People I worship and adore you, Lord Jesus Christ, present in the Holy Sacrament and in your people, who are gathered in spirit. In this moment I join with them to receive you in my heart, and in our community. May you, enthroned on the altar, be now enthroned in my heart; may you, present in bread and wine, feed and renew my soul; may you, who give yourself to us again, fill us with grace, and heavenly blessing. Even as I am fed, may my hunger for you and for your reign of justice and peace increase, that I may, with your Spirit, work for that day when your reign shall come on earth as it is in heaven. Amen. 10

Prayer after Communion Presider Let us pray. Please stand, as you are able. O God, as we are strengthened in these holy mysteries, may our lives be a continual offering, holy and acceptable in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. People Amen. Presider Glory to God, People whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen. The Blessing Presider The peace of God which passes all understanding keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. People Amen. Hymn – CP 592: Where Cross the Crowded Ways of Life Tune: Fulda (Walton) Cantor Where cross the crowded ways of life, where cries of tribe and race resound, amid the noise of selfish strife, O Christ, your word of love is found. In haunts of wretchedness and need, on shadowed thresholds, dark with fears, from paths where hide the lures of greed, we catch the vision of your tears. 11
O Jesus, from the mountainside make haste to heal these hearts of pain. Among these restless throngs abide; O tread the city's streets again, till all the world shall learn your love, and follow where your feet have trod; till glorious from your heaven above shall come the city of our God.
