SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2021 Knowing Christ’s Love … Seeking His Will … Spreading His Word
Holy Communion is celebrated at this congregation in the confession and glad confidence that with the bread and the wine we also truly receive the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We call this belief the Doctrine of the Real Presence. Through the gift of Communion, the Lord bestows on us the forgiveness of sins and strengthens our union with Him and with one another. Our Lord desires that those who commune should know and believe what they are receiving in Holy Communion (1 Corinthians 11:29), should be instructed in God’s Word so that they can properly examine themselves prior to communing (1 Corinthians 11:28), and should be united as one body in the faith (Acts 2:42 and 1 Corinthians 10:17). Out of our heartfelt desire that all who commune at this altar be well prepared for Holy Communion, this congregation practices “close communion.” All who are presently communicant members in a congregation of The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod and those Lutheran churches that are in altar and pulpit fellowship with the LCMS are warmly invited to join us in Communion. All other guests are warmly invited to come to the communion rail for a blessing from the pastor. Please cross your arms at the rail to receive the blessing. We invite guests to visit with a pastor about how we may commune together in the future. Communicants may receive the host by having it placed directly into the mouth or by having it placed in the palm of the hand. If the communicant wishes to take the individual cup, please take one from the tray when the elder comes to your place at the communion rail. Drink from the individual cup only when the pastor/elder comes to your place at the communion rail with the chalice and speaks the words of distribution. If the communicant wishes to receive the chalice, do not take an individual cup from the tray carried by the elder. The Lord has given His people the gift of His Body and His Blood in, with and under the consecrated bread and wine for the forgiveness of sins (St. Matthew 26:28). However, if an individual is allergic or intolerant to wheat or fermented wine, it is difficult to participate in this great fellowship. Should you be one of these individuals, we gladly provide gluten-free and alcohol-removed wine so that you are able to receive these gifts of God with your brothers and sisters in Christ.
Warm greetings to you, dear worshipper, in the name of our Risen Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. May the blessings of His presence and His peace be with you throughout this week. Guests: If you are a guest worshiping with us today, we are honored to have you join us in receiving the rich blessings that our Lord supplies to us through the gift of His holy Word. We invite you to return and worship with us again as the opportunity arises. Children: Parents and their children are welcome to sit in the front of the church so that the children can see and hear the service clearly. The Family Room in the Narthex may be used by anyone who prefers or needs a more private setting. Prayer Requests: If you have an intercession to add to our weekly prayers at church or to our daily Prayer Chain, please contact the Church Office or fill out one of the prayer request cards located in your pew and place it in the offering collection box. Publications: We invite you to read our Trinity Weekly News and visit our bulletin boards for info about church activities. Publications including our monthly newsletter are available from the information stand in the Narthex and at various locations in the hallway. Accessibility: A lift (slow-moving elevator) is located just outside the sanctuary overflow area for those who prefer not to take the stairs to the lower level. Ushers and many church members can assist with the operation of the lift. Audio Assistance: We provide hearing-assist and closed captioning devices for the hearing impaired. If you would like to try these devices to see if they will enhance your worship experience, they are located in the Narthex. CD and DVD recordings of the weekly service will be available from the Church Office later in the week. Serving in God’s House Today: Preacher: Rev. Joseph McCalley Liturgist: Rev. Text and tune: Public domain Stand Confession and Absolution The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism. P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. P Our help is in the name of the Lord, C who made heaven and earth. P If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? C But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared. P Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. C Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen. P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen.
Service of the Word Introit Psalm 37:5–7; antiphon: v. 4 P Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. C Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act. P He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday. C Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices! C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Kyrie LSB 204
Gloria in Excelsis LSB 204 Salutation and Collect of the Day P The Lord be with you. C And with your spirit. P Let us pray. O God, whose strength is made perfect in weakness, grant us humility and childlike faith that we may please You in both will and deed; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. Sit
Old Testament Reading Jeremiah 11:18–20 18 The LORD made it known to me and I knew; then you showed me their deeds. 19 But I was like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter. I did not know it was against me they devised schemes, saying, “Let us destroy the tree with its fruit, let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name be remembered no more.” 20 But, O LORD of hosts, who judges righteously, who tests the heart and the mind, let me see your vengeance upon them, for to you have I committed my cause. P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Gradual Psalm 34:9, 19, alt. P Fear the LORD, you his saints, C for those who fear him lack nothing! P Many are the afflictions of the righteous, C but the LORD delivers him out of them all. Epistle James 3:13—4:10 13 Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. 14But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. 15This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. 17But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. 18And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. 1 What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? 2You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. 4You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over
the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”? 6But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” 7Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you. P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Stand Alleluia and Verse Holy Gospel Mark 9:30–37 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the ninth chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. 30 [The disciples] went on from there and passed through Galilee. And [Jesus] did not want anyone to know, 31for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And when he is killed, after three days he will rise.” 32But they did not understand the saying, and were afraid to ask him.
33 And they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house he asked them, “What were you discussing on the way?” 34But they kept silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest. 35And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” 36 And he took a child and put him in the midst of them, and taking him in his arms, he said to them, 37“Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.” P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ. Nicene Creed C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets.
And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life T of the world to come. Amen. Sermon “More Humble Pie for the Disciples” Mark 9:30–37 Sermon notes Stand Prayer of the Church
Today we will offer communion in two ways: one is the continuous line that we’ve been practicing and the other will be at the rail. There will be both individual and common cup at the rail. You may choose which line you prefer—continuous or at the rail. Service of the Sacrament Stand Preface LSB 208 P The Lord be with you. C And with your spirit. P Lift up your hearts. C We lift them to the Lord. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C It is right to give Him thanks and praise. P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, for the countless blessings You so freely bestow on us and all creation. Above all, we give thanks for Your boundless love shown to us when You sent Your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, into our flesh and laid on Him our sin, giving Him into death that we might not die eternally. Because He is now risen from the dead and lives and reigns to all eternity, all who believe in Him will overcome sin and death and will rise again to new life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: Sanctus LSB 208
Prayer of Thanksgiving P Blessed are You, O Lord our God, king of all creation, for You have had mercy on us and given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. In Your righteous judgment You condemned the sin of Adam and Eve, who ate the forbidden fruit, and You justly barred them and all their children from the tree of life. Yet, in Your great mercy, You promised salvation by a second Adam, Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, and made His cross a life-giving tree for all who trust in Him. We give You thanks for the redemption You have prepared for us through Jesus Christ. Grant us Your Holy Spirit that we may faithfully eat and drink of the fruits of His cross and receive the blessings of forgiveness, life, and salvation that come to us in His body and blood. Hear us as we pray in His name and as He has taught us: Lord’s Prayer C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. The Words of Our Lord P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” Pax Domini P The peace of the Lord be with you always. C Amen. Agnus Dei LSB 210 Sit
Distribution Distribution Hymn LSB 750 If Thou But Trust in God to Guide Thee 5 Nor think amid the fiery trial To make the rich man poor and low. That God hath cast thee off unheard, True wonders still by Him are wrought That he whose hopes meet no denial Who setteth up and brings to naught. Must surely be of God preferred. Time passes and much change doth bring 7 Sing, pray, and keep His ways unswerving, And sets a bound to ev’rything. Perform thy duties faithfully, And trust His Word; though undeserving, 6 All are alike before the Highest; Thou yet shalt find it true for thee. ’Tis easy for our God, we know, God never yet forsook in need To raise thee up, though low thou liest, The soul that trusted Him indeed. LECTIONARY PREVIEW STUDY Prepare for next week: September 26, 2021— Eighteenth Sunday After Pentecost Old Testament: Numbers 11:4-6, 10-16, 24, 29 1. Since the pericope is chopped up rather finely, we may benefit from reading chapter 11 in its entirety. 2. Who are the “rabble” in v. 4? Refer to Exodus 12:38. It is possible there were other people groups who left Egypt with the Israelites. Read 11:1-2 for a little more context of the grum- bling. 3. The “strong craving” wording of the ESV is a bit weak. The Hebrew here conveys “felt a gluttonous craving,” or as the kids today might say, “hangry” (hungry unto anger). 4. Moses has quite the outpouring of self-pity in vv. 10-15. Is it okay to be angry at God? How does Psalm 43:2 redirect the Christian’s thoughts? How does God provide relief to Moses, 11:16? Should we be upset or angry at the way God answers our prayers, 11:29? Psalm 104:27-35 Epistle: James 5 5. The food the Israelites craved in Egypt might be compared to the riches James rails against in 5:1-6. For what purpose is James admonishing the rich in v. 5? How do riches or longing for the “good ol’ days” interfere with God’s provision? 6. Moses’ plea for God to “finish the job” and just kill him is very strong. Yet, what words does James give as counsel to believers in 5:7-16? Holy Gospel: Mark 9:38-50 7. Consider v. 41 and ask yourself: do my words and actions permit Christ to be seen, or do they lead people to something far worse, meaning, sin? 8. Jesus’ references to sin are reminiscent of his description of the heart in Mark 7:17-23. What is the source of sin, even though hand, foot, or eye, may commit the sin? 9. Jesus’ description of hell in v. 48 is a quotation of Isaiah 66:24. Chapter 66 is generally thought of as the burning and utter destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians. 10. In vv.49, 50, what is the salt that gives peace between one another? Hint: it’s been the recurring answer for the past six weeks in Mark’s Gospel; what do the Pharisees not study carefully?
