Immanuel’s MESSENGER January 2020 WHAT IS HAPPENING THIS MONTH AT IMMANUEL Immanuel welcomes Pastor John Swanson Greetings all at Immanuel, I am Pastor John Swanson, and I am very excited to be joining you as your Interim Pastor beginning Monday, January 4, 2021. My wife, Beth, is an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater and our two children, Lydia and Caleb, are 23 and 18 respectively. I am a Packer fan, walker, and an avid reader. Peace, Pastor John A bright, shiny new year, Another chance Another chance empty, neat, pristine, to make a real effort to make a difference. waiting, ready to give more than we get. A good new year. for us to get it right. A Happy New Year! Annual Meeting - January 24, 2021 - 10am We will keep you informed as to how this meeting will take place. JANUARY 2021 MESSENGER 1
STEWARDSHIP by Jean Kwapil Stories are powerful Think about how many times you have told a story. Maybe it was good news or sad news. When we are excited about something we call and tell people about it. Why don’t we get that excited about the Good news of Jesus and share it with as many as we can? Stories are powerful, we experience God alive in Gods stories, the Bible. How might we be good stewards of God’s story and our own stories of God’s work in our lives? Read a passage from the Bible and listen for the places where your imagination is caught. If you do this as a group or with a friend or spouse, listen to what they heard. This practice empowers each person to be an interpreter of the Bible. Perhaps after you listen to a sermon; do you ever wonder where did that come from? We have had many pastors over the years that have shared their interpretation of the Bible. Sometimes it’s easier to listen to the children’s sermon to understand the theme of the day. I look forward to hearing Pastor John’s interpretation of Gods stories. Stewards of Gods Love Thanks to everyone that made a donation to Hometown Missions for our Thankofferring service. Thank Remember when Jean Kwapil sent out a request of birthday cards for Violet Jones who was celebrating her 100th birthday alone & away from family? Here is a thank you note from her you daughter . . . Dear Jean, I was overwhelmed by the amount of cards my mom received from the members of your church for Mom's birthday. If it is possible please tell everyone how much we appreciated their thoughtfulness and kind sentiments. The beautiful cards made Mom smile and that was so nice to see. We gave to the staff cupcakes, balloons, etc. to help celebrate the day. Even though these are difficult days they tried to make it a special day for her and all of the beautiful cards were the icing on the cake. Thank you, Kim Rusch JANUARY 2021 MESSENGER 2
PERSONAL ESSENTIALS PANTRY by Kathy Schuett After being closed beginning in April due to the pandemic, the Personal Essentials Pantry (PEP) re-opened on October 1. Some faithful volunteers have returned to help us and as of this writing we continue to be open. To stay safe, we are following the same guidelines and procedures that the Food Pantry has been using successfully throughout this pandemic. We could use a few more volunteers willing to spend two hours from 1-3 pm on a Thursday afternoon at PEP. Our guests remain in the hallway and we are protected by a shield barrier (made by Bob Eske) that is in the doorway. The work is definitely not difficult. It consists of greeting our guests, marking the Shopping List of the items they may need, then either reading items off a list or filling a grocery bag with those items to be put on a cart and passed underneath the barrier. Therefore we never need to come in physical contact, nor touch anything belonging to our guests. We wear masks the entire time, and since our new room is so spacious, we manage to keep our distance from the other volunteers also. That does not keep us from enjoying each other’s company however! I realize this is a horrible time to be looking for volunteers, but if you have even an inkling of joining our ‘crew’ or could use an excuse to get out of the house for a few hours, we would love to have you join us. Please call the church office (920) 261-1663 or my home (920) 261-9104 and leave a message. I will get back to you as soon as possible. On another note, some of the office chairs that we are presently using have definitely seen their better days. If anyone has one available for us to use, that would be fantastic! Kathy Schuett PEP-Immanuel Coordinator Parish Education *Happy New Year* Thanks to your generous support of Parish Education in the last years, (memorials, coffee hour and Lenten meal donations and Sunday School offerings), we are able to contribute $1000 toward the Immanuel's Promise matching grant. May 2021 bring us all back together to learn and worship in the fellowship of our Immanuel Family...and in our beautifully-renovated education and ministries building!! Together we will grow in God's call to serve the world. Scrip Update: Please remember that our church has an account with AmazonSmile; and we receive a donation for ‘every’ dollar spent. To date 61 orders have been placed; and Immanuel has received $266.09. We receive direct deposit payments from Amazon quarterly. We’re happy to report that the amounts received continue to increase each time. Keep the great work! If you haven’t already set up an account, it’s very easy to do. First of all make sure you sign into “AmazonSmile” and not just Amazon. You then need to select your charity -- Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church ELCA, Watertown, WI. Make sure when you scroll down the list you select the correct church. That’s it. JANUARY 2021 MESSENGER 3

CONGREGATIONAL COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES December 10, 2020 ATTENDANCE: D. Morstad, T. Thom, M. Morstad, R. Lessner, A. Nagle, J. Hedrick, B. Boxell, S. Weihert, D. Daley, J. Kwapil, B. Konz ABSENT: L. Avila Vette, M. Hedrick 1. The meeting was called to order at 6:03 PM by D. Morstad 2. Opening Devotion by Beth Boxell. 3. Approval of Meeting Agenda ● Motion: J. Kwapil Second: S. Weihert to approve the corrected agenda. Motion carried by voice vote and raise of hands. 4. Vision Victories ● A generous and anonymous monetary gift was received for the Capital campaign fund in memory of the giver’s parents. The giver wanted the gift made public and would like to see his $50,000.00 matched by other contributions by the end of the year. ● Kati Enright-Deming, Carlton House Manager, sent a letter of thanks to Immanuel for the support and dedication to people in need. ● Thanks to all who helped out with Children’s Christmas program; children and adults. “It is going to be so cute.” ● The Candlelight virtual concert is this weekend. Thank you to the many hands and minds that made this 65th Annual concert be a part of our Christmas experience. ● We are blessed because Immanuel has many people among us who can carry on with what Immanuel does well. Trevor, Rita, Beth Roxanne, Sue, David and Lauren and the many vocalists and musicians to enlighten our worship services. 5. Building Update ● Flood repair update ● The installation of the new floor in the fellowship hall has begun ● Aiming for the project to be completed by the end of December. ● The deductible cost will be returned to us also by the end of the year. 6. Capital Campaign Update ● Pledges have been coming in after there was a new effort of the campaign committee to spark the campaign. ● Continuity of the capital campaign won’t be as much of an issue during this time of pastoral transition. Pastor John is very familiar with capital campaigns and specifically campaigns where Kairos was the consultant. Dr. Elise Brown is also familiar with Pastor John and Bethel Lutheran Church. ● The Council President’s end of the year letter usually asks for financial gifts to lessen the line of credit debt. That has been zero all year. The request this year will be to help bring down the balance of the building expenses loan. ● Looking at developing a specific fund-raising committee to hold events to raise funds for the capital campaign balance. D. Morstad will arrange a meeting with the Capital Campaign Committee and discuss this issue and get a committee on its feet. ● There was a question raised about the possibility of member loans being used in the capital campaign. ● The short-term loan was designed to exist for the life of the capital campaign (3yrs) with the terms being a payment of interest only and at that time the loan would turn into a mortgage. Currently we pay about $13,000.00 a month in interest. 7. President’s Report ● Pastor interim update JANUARY 2021 MESSENGER 9
● The contract with Pastor John Swanson is in place. ● Jenifer and Beth have been in contact with Pastor Swanson about Confirmation classes. ● Pastor John would like to start bringing in some of his things and visit/tour Immanuel. ● There have been members who have shown interest in being on the call committee ● Pastor John will be working with the call committee so it will not be formed until after he joins us. ● Pastor Doug Anderson from Cross in Ixonia will provide emergency pastoral coverage until Pastor John is on staff. We need to let our members know who and how to call for an immediate medical emergency during off office hours. We can’t have people leaving a message on the phone that won’t be heard for days. D. Morstad will discuss with Pastor John and Pastor Anderson for suggestions to cover the next few weeks. ● Audit Committee ● Kelly Braunschweig has consented to fill Robert Poth’s vacated position on the audit committee. ● Motion: J.Kwapil Second: B.Konz to appoint Kelly Braunschweig to the audit committee to fill Robert Poth’s vacated position on the audit committee for the remainder of fiscal year 2020. Motion carried by voice vote and show of hands. 8. Nominating Committee Report ● There have been confirmed acceptances for positions on the Endowment Committee and for Synod Assembly representatives. ● Still looking for nominees for Congregation Secretary, treasurer and Social Concerns. 9. Approval of Consent Agenda ● Acceptance of membership report ● Acceptance of council & committee reports ● Discussion: Annual committee reports, that summarize the years activities, need to be in Janis’ hands by Dec. 25. ● Ryan Lessner, from Personnel Committee, received a resume from a gentleman that works at Madison Country Day School, Even Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell is a graduate from Luther College and held a position in their top vocal choir, The Nordic Choir and is also an accomplished organist; playing in churches since age 16. ● A former member of our congregation, Margaret Jones Stansfield, did suggest that Mitchell might be a consideration for our vacated Director of Music. ● Samples of Mitchell’s vocal and organ accomplishments have been sent to the council. He has made a good impression ● Concerns about building a position around a possible candidate versus posting an ad, recruiting and hire around a job position. ● The staffing configuration committee is discussing our current staffing model versus part-time positions with room for stipends for other areas in ministry. ● On the Organist guild website, there is a range of $150-300.00 for advertising a job posting. This is budget allowance to cover search expenses for this type of position. ● Acceptance of financial reports ●Discussion: The October reports are still in question so can’t be approved. Income is accurate but expenses paid do not tally correctly. ● We can accept November’s report. Approval of November and special meeting minutes Motion: R. Lessner Second: J.Kwapil to approve the consent agenda, with the exception of October’s financial report. Motion carried by voice vote and show of hands. 10. Unfinished Business ● Boiler update ● M. Hedrick is not available this evening. But the last information was that he had a contact that worked in HVAC who might bring us better news on the boiler and cost of repair/installation. JANUARY 2021 MESSENGER 10
● Mike and Rocky Bohman and this contact did meet and his final report hasn’t been received yet. ● Waiting for Mike’s report. 11. New Business ● 2021 Operating Budget ● We’re unable to look at or bring to approval a preliminary operating budget for 2021 tonight because two large pieces of information are missing from the proposed budget: ● We need more information regarding the projected income from the Capital Campaign for 2021. ● We need to know what the new loan interest is and that information isn’t available until next week. ●Staffing expenses are the largest chunk of the budget ● Input from all committee chairs is helpful as a guideline for program expenses. The section marked “programming” has helpful information regarding what each committee spent in the past years. ● Salary for Pastor John will be the same salary that Pastor Todd was paid in 2020 plus the cost of family health insurance, pension expenses auto expense and education allowance (benefit package). Health insurance was not an expense for Pastor Todd and this is a significant amount. ● Music director will need a salary and a benefit package as well. ● The salaries of the Office manager, financial secretary and cemetery Sexton were discussed. ● Our proposed budget needs to be in the hands of the congregation before the annual meeting. Motion: S. Weihert Second: B.Boxell to recommend a 2% raise for the office staff and the cemetery Sexton. Motion carried on voice vote and show of hands. ● Question if the Cemetery Sexton could be paid out of the Cemetery Endowment Funds instead of the Church budget. Because of the COVID, the policies and procedures for the cemetery endowment fund have not been developed as of yet. But that’s a goal for 2021 ● Motion: T.Thom Second: B.Boxell to move our regular scheduled Congregational Council Meeting to January 7 at 6:00PM with the Budget and in-person worship the two discussion items on the agenda. Motion carried by voice vote and show of hands. ● Christmas recognition for the staff will be taken care of by J.Kwapil. 12. Calendar Review ● December 13 at 4:00PM Virtual Candlelight Concert ● December 20 at 8:00AM Virtual Sunday School Christmas Program ● December 24 at 11AM &4:30PM on-line Worship services ● No Christmas Day Services ● December 27 at 8AM on-line Service of Lessons and Carols ● January 2 at 9:00AM Taking Christmas decorations down ● January 4 Pastor John Swanson arrives ● January 7 at 6:00PM Congregational Council Meeting ● January 24 at 10:00AM Annual Meeting 13. Closing Prayer by T. Thom 14. Adjourn: Motion: T. Thom Second: B.Konz to adjourn the meeting at 8:30PM. Motion carried by voice vote. Respectfully Submitted, Mary Morstad Congregation Secretary JANUARY 2021 MESSENGER 11

So many unanswered questions. We will keep you informed! Go Pack!! UPDATE from Seminarian Rita Argus Hello people of Immanuel! It was wonderful to be able to worship with you all during the month of December. I am heading back to school at Trinity Lutheran Seminary at Capital University in early January to begin my last semester on campus and will then be moving to my internship placement this summer for the next two years. I should be finding out where that placement will be at the end of January and appreciate your continued prayers and support. This last semester was kind of strange as many things were pared down because of the pandemic; however, despite it being a weird semester I still enjoyed all of my classes. My favorite class this semester was Introduction to the New Testament I or as my professor called it IN To the Unknown! (all Frozen II references intended). In addition to classes, I continued working at Nationwide Children's Hospital as a Support Chaplain and helped put together some virtual or socially distant community events for the other students at Trinity. I was excited to see how much I have grown over the past year and I am looking forward to Rita with her puppy, Jellybean. seeing my continued growth into this call. Thank you again for your support! Remember that you are loved and blessed by God. Peace, Rita JANUARY 2021 MESSENGER 12
