CONTACT “See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut” (Revelation 3:8) JANUARY 2019 CHESTER ROAD BAPTIST CHURCH
Minister’s Letter Welcome to 2019. The new year is a time to reflect back on 2018 and, crucially, to look forward to all the potential that 2019 has to offer. People often make New Year resolutions: drink less, exercise more, pray like Apostle Paul, be nicer to the neighbour’s cat... How are you approaching 2019? What are you hoping and praying for? How do you want to live this coming year? What about committing yourself to read through the entire Bible in a year? Check out www.BibleInOneYear.org It’s a free Bible reading app with commentary by Nicky and Pippa Gumbel. Nicky Gumbel is the Vicar of HTB (Holy Trinity, Brompton) in London and pioneer of the Alpha course. In 2018 we laid a foundation for 2019 and beyond. We pressed refresh on our vision, mission and values – discerning the mission and ministry God has for us. The task in 2019 and beyond is to bring this God-given aspiration into reality. “See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut” (Revelation 3:8). What might this mean for you this year? How should we apply this for us a church? i Gather Our morning series for January is called The Door. We’ll approach four doors in the Bible. Each will have a powerful application for us, both as individuals and as a church. Come, expectant and open to all that God has for us. In the evenings, we’ll pick-up in Romans. i Tell Thank you to everyone who invited friends and family to events and services at Chester Road Baptist in 2018. There is huge power in a personal invitation! .#TryAlpha One of the best ways to feel energised in your faith is to see someone you know chose to follow Christ. Alpha starts again on Tuesday 22nd January, this time with a choice of lunchtime and evening sessions Alpha is a series of 10 sessions that explore the big issues around faith and unpack the basics of Christianity. Each session includes a two-course meal, followed by a scene-setting talk/video and then discussion groups. You can help make Alpha work by: 1. Attending Alpha, refreshing your faith 2. Inviting people to #TryAlpha (come with them) 3. Volunteering to serve at Alpha 4. Praying for all those participating in Alpha 2
i Pray Prayer is vital. Good ideas are not enough. Here are three opportunities for you to pray: 1. Early Bird Prayer What: Help yourself to some light breakfast and then join in with prayer. We include the Northumbria Community’s Daily Office (morning prayer and readings). Stay for as little or as much as you like. When: Every Tuesday morning, drop-in anytime between 6.30 - 8.00 am. 2. Midweek communion What: A short communion service with prayers, readings, and liturgy. Stay for refreshments. When: Every Wednesday morning @ 11.30 am. On the 2nd Wednesday, we’ll include a focus on healing and wholeness. 3. Higher – prayer nights What: Gather as a church to pray together for a range of church, community and global issues. Creative, focused, from the heart, together… When: Wednesday 30th January @ 7.45 pm Then in Mar 27th, May 29th, Jul 24th. i Belong We have a number of people in process of becoming church members. Being a Baptist Church, we take church membership seriously. Whilst all are of course welcome to attend our services, we think it’s better to belong to the church community. In a Baptist church that is expressed through membership. By becoming a Church Member: 1. We express our oneness to the body of Christ; 2. We help to shape the direction of the church; 3. You become eligible after 12 months to stand as a Deacon, a member of the Leadership; 4. You convey your support for, and engagement with, Chester Road Baptist Church’s new adventure. Is it time you became a church member too? For more information, see www.ChesterRoadBaptist.org.uk/iBelong or talk to any of the Deacons or Danny Brierley. Finally, God says to you and to us as a church, “See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut” (Revelation 3:8). May 2019 be a year of open doors for us all. Rev Danny Brierley Minister 3
Higher Wider Deeper Higher - Prayer Night Wednesday 30th January, 7.45 – 9.00 pm Nothing happens without prayer. We can have great plans, do lots of things and yet.. "unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labour in vain" (Psalm 127:1). We want Higher Prayer Nights to be creative and engaging but, more than anything, we want them to be God-honouring, sacred space to pray and seek God. We're asking Jesus to teach us how to pray (Luke 11:1). Wider – Church Members Meeting Wednesday 16th January @ 7.45 pm The Church Meeting is where Church Members come together to discern the mind of Christ – God’s will, not or own. It involves prayer, prophecy, listening, and discernment. It should not be primarily a business meeting. We have six Church Meetings a year and they are open to members and non-members alike. NB where a vote is required, only members may vote. Deeper – in Bible engagement Wednesday 13th February, 7.45 pm Want to go deeper in your engagement with the Bible? These sessions will be always thought- provoking, occasionally controversial, never dogmatic or simplistic. The Bible is by far the most published and yet least read – and even less understood - book of all time. Many people, Christian and not, find strength, wisdom and inspiration from its content. But what does it say? How do you understand or it? These were questions Jesus asked an expert in the Scriptures. On 13th February we’ll ask some big questions about what the Bible is and is not. 4

Christmas Celebrations Sixteen members and friends of the Tuesday Bible Study Group enjoyed a Christmas lunch at the Fox Carvery in Walmley. Alpha Course Alpha is an opportunity to explore or re-examine Christian Faith in a fun and friendly way. On arrival, enjoy a two-course meal with others. A great community experience! Then, after a short talk/video, it’s into discussion groups to have your say. We’re running two series in Spring 2019 and you can choose between lunchtime and evening sessions. Breakaway On Thursday December 13th, our last meeting of 2018, we were delightfully entertained by the 'After Show Singers'. They sang a wonderful selection of Christmas songs which put us all in the 'Christmas mood'. Many thanks to Carol Turner for arranging this enjoyable entertainment. Afterwards we had a time of friendship over a mince pie and a cup of tea and I think a good time was had by all. Looking Forward Our new 2019 programme is now available and includes a wide range of interesting speakers and topics. We invite all ladies to join us on the 2nd Thursday of each month in the Primary Room and we extend a warm welcome to all new members. The next meeting will be on 10th January at 7.30pm when we will be having a talk about the Donkey Sanctuary, which is an Assisted Therapy Unit situated in Sutton Park . All are welcome and we look forward to seeing you at this friendly and supportive group. If you have any queries please contact Ann Hawkings. 5

All are welcome from the Church fellowship and any friends that you would like to invite. This is an ideal Christian outreach activity of chat, coffee and friendship. We are hoping to arrange a few outings in 2019 and even thinking of a holiday together. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 8th January 2019. Ladies’ Group Prayer Breakfast We will meet on Saturday 5th January from 9am to 10.30am. The focus of the session is discipleship and building the confidence to share our faith. All welcome. Job Club Update A lot of discussion and planning has recently been taking place to launch Job Clubs at Chester Road, Six Ways and George Road Baptist churches in January 2019. Volunteers have been trained; equipment sourced and set up and publicity will be distributed during the first week in January. Each church will be reaching out into their communities throughout north Birmingham. As well as meeting a practical need, this is all about building lasting relationships with people and a point of help with a cup of coffee! Please pray for the start of this exciting venture as the job clubs will be providing practical job-search support and mentoring, including writing CV s, job applications, interview preparation and presentation. The proposed start dates are as follows: Six Ways Church on Tuesday 15th January Gorge Road Church on Wednesday 16th January Chester Road on Thursday 17th January 10.00am – 12 noon in the lounge. The Jericho Foundation – Christmas Charity It was in 1993 that the Rev John Mallard opened his church in Balsall Heath, Birmingham as a simple drop-in centre for the local community. This developed into a support system to help local people find employment. He realised that there were barriers such as long-term unemployment, lack of skills and qualifications and feeling worthless which made finding a job more than difficult and needed to be addressed. From this drop-in activity it developed job club plus centre (often based at a local church) throughout the Birmingham area. The focus is to simply help people find fulfilling employment. The job club plus provides practical job-search support and mentoring, including writing CV’s, job applications, interview preparation and presentation skills. In 2006 the Foundation developed Social Enterprises around Birmingham. One is near Sutton Coldfield town centre – just near the council’s recycling centre in Riland Road. Here, any item that is brought in is recycled and sold. They have introduced an Apprentice Scheme that trains folk in the retail trade thus giving practical work experience. If you need a Christmas tree please pay a visit to this site – trees of all colours and sizes and recycled! Reasonable prices plus a range of recycled Christmas decorations to boot! This charity was presented at the recent Church Meeting and adopted as the Christmas charity 2018. Message from BMS Thank you for your generous donation to Life’s First Cry. Your gift has the potential to help save the lives of more babies and more mothers in Afghanistan – and we are so grateful. Andisha, the proud mother of Roya and Navid, has a personal message for you. “I’d just like to say thank you for your help,” she says. “Things are so much better because of the lessons. All these things that you’re helping to support make a real difference; they’ve made my life and my family’s life so much better. Thank you, thank you.” Roya and Andisha In the coming months, we hope to be able to tell you many stories about how your gift is helping to transform the lives of families like Andisha’s in Afghanistan’s mountains, and elsewhere. But until then, from all of us at BMS World Mission, may I just say a huge thank you for your support. Yours sincerely Angelina Sahota Supporter Services Team Member The above is a thank you for our special BMS collection which arrived just too late for the December Contact - Peter 8

RESTORE – a project of Birmingham Churches Together supporting refugees and those seeking sanctuary Restore's mission is to encourage friendship and build resources to enable asylum seekers and refugees to make a valued contribution in community and society. In addition Restore works to raise awareness, change attitudes and challenge prejudice in the host community. Restore was founded in 1999 by a small group of churches in response to the Kosovo crisis and government policy of dispersing asylum seekers around the country. The project was formally adopted by Birmingham Churches Together in 2000. Originally Restore was run by volunteers, but as the work of Restore expanded, paid staff have been employed to help meet the needs of the refugees and asylum seekers in the city. The staff team currently comprises a Project Co-ordinator, Befriending Co-ordinator, Befriending Women’s Worker, Befriending Men’s Worker and part-time Administrative Assistant. Restore has a vision to see refugees and asylum seekers welcomed and integrated into society and our strapline is welcome – include - integrate. One of the key ways Restore seeks to put our vision into action is through our befriending scheme. Befriending is at the heart of Restore; volunteers receive training from Restore and are then linked with a refugee or asylum seeker. We seek to make a compassionate response and offer welcome, friendship and emotional support. We recognise that every befriending relationship is unique but each relationship communicates to the asylum seeker or refugee that 'you matter and somebody cares what happens to you'. At the end of 2017, we had a team of over 100 committed volunteers and 122 ongoing befriending relationships. Restore has developed a programme of social events for lone men and lone women. There are day trips for families in some of the school holidays. Group activities aim to build relationship, break down isolation and provide recreation. In 2012, we started a new project called ‘Equipping Refugees for Work’ which combines interactive training sessions with mentoring in order to help refugees to overcome barriers to employment and become more job-ready. In 2015, we started a Parent and Toddler group which runs fortnightly in term time. Role Description for Befrienders Befrienders are volunteers who are linked with a refugee or asylum seeker to offer social support. The befriender will aim to meet the client once every 2 weeks. Meetings will take place in a neutral place, e.g. café, museum or park, or at the home of the client (particularly if the client has pre-school children). The aim is to offer social support and to develop a mutually rewarding relationship. 10
In general terms befriending may include: Welcome and friendship Listening Help with conversational English – if people are to be integrated into British society they need to communicate well in English. We are not asking volunteers to be ESOL teachers, but as some clients may speak very little English outside of their college course or may have no access to a college course, befrienders can provide a great opportunity to practise. Helping the refugee or asylum seeker to find other services (e.g. ESOL classes, sports facilities, places of worship or where to shop) or, if befrienders are free in the daytime, going to appointments with them (e.g. Midlands Enforcement Unit, asylum appeal hearing in Birmingham or to a medical appointment). Taking action, e.g. phoning a housing provider about a repair job, especially if the befriendee has no phone credit or limited English. Where the client has children, the befriender may meet those children WITH the client, e.g. at their home or for a trip to the park. For safeguarding reasons the befriender should NOT be left alone with the children. The focus of befriending is primarily the adult client not the children. Comments from befrienders: “It is about promoting independence, helping refugees build up their confidence as well as their English language.” “The befriending has to be flexible as the refugees have different needs and the befrienders have different things to offer. It can take a while to work this out.” ` “I offer support and encouragement to my befriendee, have given informal English tuition, help the older children with homework and celebrate birthdays and other events with the family. While the practical help has been really appreciated, I think it is fair to say that the development of a relationship that is consistent, unconditional, personal and caring has been the most powerful and transformative experience both for my befriendee and for me.” Comments from those who have been befriended: “Befrienders are excellent at providing the invisible things like just showing you around, being a friend, providing company, giving you a feeling of normal life.” “Restore has been helping me in a lot of ways. I was introduced to a nice lady befriender, she supports me in every way I need it. She has been and is still a very good friend and emotional support. Being a refugee is hard and really you need all the support you can get. I’m so grateful for everything that has been done for me. ” “My befriender is very supportive, informative, caring and considerate. Restore has enabled me to confidently integrate myself into the community. I found Restore like a shelter for people like me who are lost in this world.” Updated September 2018 (Please see poster for training programme details) 11

In Africa In the next 10 years, more Christians will live in Africa than on any other continent. Demand for the Bible is already unprecedented – and it’s on the rise. There’s an enormous need and opportunity before us. As part of our work to bring the Bible to life here at home and across the world, we plan over the next five years to step up our efforts in the toughest, hardest parts of Africa. Our aim is to reach the poorest, most marginalized men, women and children. People who against the odds are striving to lift themselves out of poverty and instability. We want to give them a helping hand by offering them the Bible and the value that the Scriptures bring. 43% of Africa's population live on less than £1.35 per day We’ll be working in countries like South Sudan, Swaziland, Congo and Central African Republic and we’ll be reaching out to leaders too, to help them lead with wisdom. (a) Seeing the Bible come to life in Africa We have a long track record of working in Africa. We have witnessed the power of the Bible to bring hope and peace to even the most troubled communities. We have seen that God’s word can build bridges where there is conflict and offer hope where it is most needed. By 2020 almost 50% of Africans are expected to identify as Christians We know leaders can draw from the Bible’s practical advice and wisdom to shape societies, particularly on issues of peace, justice and socio-economic development. We know that when people engage with the Bible, their lives can change, for good. (b) Provide the Bible in Africa’s toughest places In the Central African Republic, violence is everywhere and poverty is rife. But in this volatile, dangerous place, people long for the Bible. You can help provide it today. (c) Under pressure and needing Bibles The Church in Algeria is facing pressure like never before. But more and more people are asking for Bibles. Pray with us Please support the work of Bible Society 14
