Salem News January 2021 THE TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS From December 25 through January 5, we celebrate the twelve days of Christmas. But do we? I think most of us spend this time recovering from all the pre-Christmas hustle and bustle. There is a carol that is sung each year at this time known as “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” We have all sung this song, but what do leaping lords, maids milking, and a partridge really have to do with Christmas. I read an article some years ago that explained the possible religious significance of the carol. Some religious historians have suggested that the carol is actually a song about Christian instruction in the faith, perhaps da- ting back to the religious wars that took place in England during the 16th century. It has been suggested that there are two levels of meaning: the surface meaning: something we give to a loved one and a deeper level that reflects various aspects of the Christian faith. Whether or not this is valid I would like to share with you the alternate meaning of the words of this song. May it add a new dimension to your daily walk in the faith. The premise is that “my true love” is God and the recipient of the various gifts is every baptized child of God. The “Partridge in a Pear Tree” is Jesus Christ, the son of God whose birth we celebrate on December 25. The “Two Turtle Doves” represent the Old and New Testaments that together bear witness to God’s self- revelation in history and the creation of a people to tell the story of God to the world. The “Three French Hens” represent the three theological virtues of Faith, Hope, and Love (1 Corinthians 13:13). The “Four Calling Birds” represent the four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John that proclaim the Good news of Jesus Christ. The “Five Golden Rings” represent the first five books of the Old Testament known as the Torah or Pentateuch (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy). The “Six Geese-a-Laying” represent the six days of creation that confess God as creator and sustainer of the world (Genesis 1). The “Seven Swans a-Swimming” represent the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit recorded in Romans 12:6-8 (prophecy, serving, teaching, encouraging, giving, leadership, and compassion). The “Eight Maids a-Milking” represent the eight Beatitudes that are found in Matthew 5:3-10. The “Nine Ladies Dancing” represent the fruit of the Holy Spirit listed in Galatians 5:22 (love, joy, peace, pa- tience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control). The “Ten Lords a-Leaping” represent the Ten Commandments that are found in Exodus 20:1-17 and Deuter- onomy 5:6-21. The “Eleven Pipers Piping” represent the eleven faithful apostles found listed in Luke 6:14-15 (Simon Peter, Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James–son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas–son of James. Judas Iscariot is not included as one of the eleven pipers since he betrayed Jesus). The Twelve Drummers Drumming” represent the twelve points of doctrine in the Apostles’ Creed: 1) I believe in God the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. 2) I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord. 3) He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. 4) He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. 5) On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven. He is seated at the right hand of the Fa- ther. 6) He will come again to judge the living and the dead. 7) I believe in the Holy Spir- it. 8) I believe in the holy catholic church. 9) I believe in the communion of saints. 10) I believe in the forgiveness of sins. 11) I believe in the resurrection of the body. 12) I be- lieve in the life everlasting. I hope that you have had a Blessed “Twelve Days of Christmas” and that you have a Christ-filled New Year. In Christ, Pastor Mike January 2021 Page 1
CHURCH COUNCIL WHAT IS EPIPHANY? President The word Epiphany is derived from the Greek word, “epiphaneia”, which Steve Morford means “appearance” or “manifestation.” Epiphany is the third oldest festival in the 309-786-7032 church year (after Easter and Pentecost). Like Christmas, Epiphany is related to a pagan solstice festival. Many centuries ago, the church set aside January 6, and Vice President called that day Epiphany. This day in the western church came to be associated with Linda Davidson the visit of the Magi. Christians recognize the visit of the Magi as a symbol that Je- 309-236-5624 sus was born not for one group of people, but that he was the “Light of the World.” Consequently, the celebration of Epiphany is sometimes referred to as the “Festival Treasurer of Lights.” Nancy Patterson There is one very interesting tradition that has emerged over the years relat- 309-737-3821 ed to Epiphany. Children in France fill their shoes with oats and then place them on the doorsteps of their houses on the Eve of Epiphany. This is done so that when the Magi come by during the night, their camels will have something to eat. The next Secretary morning in response to this kindness shown to their camels, the Magi leave the chil- Rita Gustafson dren’s shoes filled with gifts. 309-721-4363 Take some time on the Eve of Epiphany this year to remember the “Light of the World” that has come into your life. You may use the following prayer as a part of Learning this observance: Miranda Luder “Lord God, on this day you revealed your Son to the nations by the leading of 309–235-7263 a star. Lead us now by faith to know your presence in our lives, and bring us at last to the full vision of your glory, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives Property and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. COUNCIL MEETING HIGHLIGHTS December 8, 2020 Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 7:08 p.m. by President Steve Morford. Pastor Lawyer led a devotion from the writings of John Maxwell. Present: R. Gustafson, D. Hann, Pr Lawyer, B. Leuck, A. Locander, S. Morford, N. Patterson. Absent: L. Davidson, S. Elliott, H. Findahl, M. Luder Minutes: N. Patterson moved to accept the November meeting minutes. The motion carried. Treasurer’s Report: Nancy reported that the income for November was on-budget, but giving is down for the year over all. Historically, December tends to be a good giving month, so we hope to catch up then. In the meantime, we will pay all of our mission support, local supportive ministries, Parish Nurse’s salary, and for boiler repairs. Nancy Patterson hopes to have a preliminary 2021 budget to the council by next week. It will be a bare bones budget based on COVID restrictions and having an interim pastor. Should the situation change, we may need to prepare a new budg- et. Howard Findahl asked for a copy of his budget (department 12), which has been delivered. Pastor’s Report: Pastor presented his written report to the council. Pastor mentioned that Joan Bowling had died. Staff Reports: Sally Patterson’s written report was presented to the council. Committee Reports: The COVID team has met and continues its work. A Stewardship letter, prepared by Steve Morford, went out in the Bulletin and we are waiting for responses from the Congregation. The Worship Committee met to make plans for Christmas. Witness, Service, Learning had nothing new to report. Property – The carpeting is being laid in the new chapel. We are using 2’ X 2’ carpet tiles for this area. The Boiler needed repairs again. We were having difficulty with it needing to be reset daily. J.L. Brady was called to do a complete diagnostic and explanation of the problem. There is plas- ter falling in the balcony, so there is still a leak in that area. Property or Steve Morford will call the company that did the brickwork to repair the issue. There is also part of the sanctuary ceiling that is sagging and falling, as well as a crack in the sidewall by the pulpit, which may be caused by leaks on the third floor. We have asked for a bid from 1-800-GotJunk to discard the items from the kitchen off of the youth room. Once that bid comes in, it will be sent to the council. Old Business: A preliminary budget will be sent to the council group email in the next week. New Business: The Annual Congregational meeting will take place on January 31, 2021. Pastor Lawyer mentioned that Pastor Clark from the Synod Office held a pastor’s meeting on how to conduct a congrega- tional meeting via Zoom. Call Committee: There will be a special congregational meeting to ap- prove the call committee on December 20 via Zoom. . See page 6 for minutes from that meeting The meeting adjourned at 7:51 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Rita Gustafson, Secretary January 2021 Page 3

SECOND SUNDAY OF CHRISTMAS Within the gospel reading's profound words lies the simple message that God is revealed in a human person. Though we may try to understand how the Word existed with God from the beginning of time, the wonder we celebrate at Christmas is that the Word continues to dwell among us. Christ comes among us in the gathered assembly, the scriptures, the wa- ters of new birth, and the bread and the wine. Through these ordinary gifts we receive the fullness of God's grace and truth. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION A Joining our voices with the song of the angels, let us pray for the church, the world, and all who are in need. A brief silence. A Redeeming God, you gather together your people from the farthest parts of the earth. Protect your church from stumbling. Let it not be overcome by sorrow, division, or des- pair. Make us radiant with goodness, that we might live always to the praise of your glo- ry. Hear us, O God. C Your mercy is great. A You bring together heaven and earth. Expand the imaginations of those who serve in positions of authority. Open their hearts to the needs of their nations and communities. Protect all those in harm's way and those risking danger for the sake of others. Hear us, O God. C Your mercy is great. A You bring consolation to those who weep. Embrace those who feel far-off, excluded, or defeated. Accompany those living with chronic and invisible illness. Sustain the weak and weary. C Amen. CLOSING HYMN “In the Bleak Midwinter” Hymn 294 In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, in the bleak midwinter, long ago. Heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain; heav'n and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign; in the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed the Lord God almighty, Jesus Christ. What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd I would bring a lamb; if I were a wise man I would do my part; yet what I can I give him - give my heart. DISMISSAL A Go in peace. Share the gift of Jesus. C Thanks be to God. Alleluia! Postlude “In the Bleak Midwinter” Laura Crumbleholme Arr. by Carol Tornquist January 2021 Page 10
