Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools 395 Wakesiah Ave, Nanaimo, BC V9R 3K6 (250) 754-5521 www.sd68.bc.ca MASKS Who is required to wear masks in school district buildings? All students from Grade 4 to 12 are required to wear non-medical masks while indoors, including at their desks and on school buses. Kindergarten to Grade 3 students are strongly encouraged to wear non-medical masks while indoors, including at their desk and on the school bus. All staff and visitors are required to wear non-medical masks while indoors. Will masks be supplied to students, staff and school visitors? Yes, disposable masks will be available. Do students have to wear masks when eating? Students will not be required to wear a mask while eating. Masks must be worn once they are finished eating. Do students have to wear masks while singing? Grade 4 to 12 students must wear masks while singing. Kindergarten to Grade 3 students not wearing masks may still sing. VACCINATION Why doesn’t the vaccine passport program include K-12 schools? Schools are not included in the vaccine passport because they are controlled environments with comprehensive health and safety measures already in place. As well, in schools we know who is in the building and when people are in the building. About half of all K-12 students are under 12 years old, so the vaccine passport would not be applicable to those students. The district does not ask about vaccination status for anyone. *If schools do host an event (like a concert open to families/public) the vaccine passport would apply to that event. Will there be COVID-19 vaccination clinics in schools? Yes, Island Health intends to have a pop-up one-day clinic in all secondary schools and every school with Grade 7 (aged 12) students in attendance. This will take place in September 2021. 1
Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools 395 Wakesiah Ave, Nanaimo, BC V9R 3K6 (250) 754-5521 www.sd68.bc.ca LEARNING Will the school district continue to support students who work from home due to COVID (and its effects)? The district will continue to do its best to accommodate all learners. How are immunocompromised students being supported this school year? Where in-class instruction is not appropriate for a student with severe immune compromise, parents or caregivers must obtain a doctor’s note indicating the need for alternative learning arrangements due to the child’s health related risks. The family may choose to have the student remain with a neighbourhood school or move to a distributed learning arrangement. Where the family chooses to remain with their neighbourhood school, the school team will collaborate with the family to establish an at-home learning program. Where a parent/caregiver is severely immune compromised, they are encouraged to connect with the child’s school to ensure appropriate preventative measures are in place for in-class instruction or distributed learning. LOCKERS Lockers can be used. SEATING ARRANGEMENTS No restrictions, being mindful of Physical Distancing and Space Arrangements. SCHOOL GATHERINGS Gradual transition to larger gatherings: Virtual → small group → large group Virtual until further notice; timeline to be determined Gr. 4 – 12 students and all staff wear masks OUTDOOR GATHERING GENERAL GUIDE Similar to indoor gatherings, we should be transitioning from small group → larger group.
