THE CONGREGATION OF THE SACRED HEARTS OF JESUS AND MARY CONTINUES TO SERVE SAN DIMAS, LA VERNE, AND SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest.
Welcome to Holy Name of Mary Today is Palm Sunday and we have NO Palms. Oh my God. No Palms, what will we do? Today we will celebrate Palm-less Sunday. So what will we do? I have an idea. What if we lift up our hearts instead of Palms and cry out loud Hosannah in the Highest. For all our Health Care Providers, Police and Fire Departments, EMT, Grocery Delivers and Cashiers, Fast Food Workers all ESSENTIAL Businesses open to we can continue to Live. Instead of laying cloaks on the ground for Jesus to walk on these people lay their very LIVES down so we can Live on. Wait a minute, what if we cry out with tears flowing, Hosannah in the Lowest for those who have died because of the Virus, those dying, and those who cannot accompany their loved ones or their final journey home. And so from our Sacred Sanctuaries of Safety, we recognize no need for Palms this year to be lifted high, but for our hearts to be. Shouting, Crying, Rejoicing, Thanking Hosannah to the ONE who comes in the name of the Lord, recognizing we are the one this year who comes for each other. Hosannah in the Highest and Lowest, indeed. GOSPEL MEDITATION April 5, 2020 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord Human beings are united in their suffering. When we find ourselves in a painful moment, our first reaction is “why me?” as if we are the only per- son on earth who ever encountered this challenge. Going through life with a “why me” attitude only finds us wallowing in the mire of self-pity and never seizing opportunities or graces. We walk in solidarity with every human being in the experience of suffering. Believing that the goal of life is the elimination or avoidance of suffering is simply an illu- sion that keeps us entrenched in a collective myth. This myth distorts us and limits us. There are living witnesses among us showing how courage and determi- nation can overcome any degree of hardship, pain, loss, or tragedy. Folks finding the normalcy of their lives suddenly torn asunder are faced with options: opportunity or despair, stay or leave. Jesus stands before us as the prime example of endurance and perseverance. He is the One who showed humility through both the triumphs of life (by learning to be humble) and the tragedies and injustices (by learning how to be obedi- ent). To secular ears, this may be perceived as nonsense. But to those with the eyes of faith, they are pearls of great price. True humility tempers the temptation we have to become complacent and prevents an excessive relishing of life’s successes and affirmations. Learning obedience keeps us faithful to our relationship with God so that we can find the courage to endure any depth of hardship, disappoint- ment, betrayal, or agony. While we may want our cup of suffering to be taken away, it simply cannot be. Somehow and somewhere in the seemingly opposing experiences life can deal us, God is present with His reassuring, compassionate, empowering, and persevering love. To be true to who we are and who God is, we must take up the cross of suffer- ing, even when it’s the hardest and most apparently senseless thing to do. Only our soul can understand these things, but our minds cannot, so they continue to run to secular ideas and solutions to pain and hardship. It goes without saying that we need to do all we can to eliminate as much senseless, unjust suffering as possible. Hunger, violence, abuse, exploita- tion, rejection, prejudice, homelessness, disrespect for life, and a whole host of other sins all result in suffering that is within our control. Then, when we face the uncontrollable kind of suffering or find ourselves the victim of injustice, what do we do? ©LPi 4 PASSION OF THE LORD GOSPEL MEDITATION
¡Viva Cristo, nuestro Rey! ©LPi MEDITACIÓN DEL EVANGÉLIO APRIL 5, 2020 5
EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS The 6 Characteristics of an Everyday Stewardship for Lent – Accountable Easter is only a week away, and churches everywhere in the West are beginning the holiest of weeks. For a mo- ment, even the secular world will bow to religious observances: closings on Good Friday, Easter baskets filled with treats, and television specials featuring Biblical figures. You and I will be reflecting on the meaning of Lent and how we have died and risen with Our Lord, Jesus Christ. Either we have prepared well for this Holy Week observance, or we are left lamenting that maybe next year will be when we get back on track. The question before us is: “To whom are we accountable?” Did our Lenten observance only have to do with us? Does it matter to anyone if we really took this time seriously or not? Both faith and community are gifts from God to us. The Church exists so we may live out that faith and respond to God’s call, being strengthened by the grace imparted through the sacraments and the community in which we find ourselves. If we are accountable to no one, then the community is simply an option on a Sunday morning, much like golf or household chores. If we are not accountable to God, then our faith is simply something we look to periodically when we are sad or frightened. However, if we are accountable to each other and to Jesus Christ, then we must answer for our stewardship gifts of faith and community. The Body of Christ is counting on us. Without a strong sense of accountability, we think our actions only affect us. In the end, we are connected to each other through Christ in such a manner that no one ever stands alone. —Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS ©LPi Give anywhere, anytime from your computer, tablet or smartphone! www.hnmparish.org/online-giving Our parish is blessed with extraordinarily generous parishioners and with a parish staff, parish council and finance councils who are great stewards of our resources. We encourage you to consider online giving as a means of contributing to the weekly offertory and/or other special collections. This means of giving is convenient for our parishioners and efficient for the parish. It is also a wonderful way for you to assist in the ministry and expenses when you are away. You can set up recurring donations on a weekly or monthly basis, or you can give on a non-recurring (single pay) basis. Of course if you prefer cash or check donations or the weekly envelopes, then it is fine and wonderful for you to continue contributing in this way! We are so very grateful for your generosity, and we are dedicated to making sure we maximize your donations. 6 PASSION OF THE LORD STEWARDSHIP AND GIVING

Adoration Prayer . My Lord Jesus Christ, I believe that You are really here in this Sacrament. Night and day You remain here compassionate and loving. You call, You wait for, You welcome everyone who comes to visit You. I thank You, Jesus my Divine Redeemer for coming upon the earth for our sake and for instituting the Adorable Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist in order to remain with us until the end of the world. I thank You for hiding beneath the Eucharistic species. Your infinite majesty and beauty, which Your Angels delight to behold, so that I might have courage to approach the throne of Your mercy. I thank You dear Jesus, for having become the priceless Victim, to merit for me the fullness of heavenly favors. Awaken in me such confidence in You that their fullness may descend ever more fruitfully upon my soul. I thank You for offering Yourself in thanksgiv- ing to God for all His benefits, spiritual and temporal which He has bestowed on me. Grant me grace and perseverance in your faithful service. Amen. Internal Adoration by Jerome Resurreccion During this challenging time of the coronavirus pandemic of 2020, losing a loved is hard enough, and more difficult at a time of unprecedented upheaval and limitations that may seem overwhelming. If someone you love has died recently, it is likely that the current social distancing orders and travel restrictions are making funeral planning especially difficult for your family. When death affects our social circle, we naturally feel the need to congregate and support one another in person. Even if you must delay a larger public gathering, please know and understand that those who want to support you will still be happy to attend months from now. Don’t assume that there’s a time limit on holding this larger public gathering. Everyone understands that the pandemic is affecting public events. I, along with our priests and deacons, encourage you to hold a small initial service right away and then schedule the additional service down the line. If you are grieving the loss of a loved one whose funeral or memorial was already celebrated, know that you may be experiencing more intense feelings of grief during these uncertain times. In grief, it is natural to feel a wide range of emotions like sadness, shock, disorganization, and regret. I offer many different grief support options to help you in your journey. I can send you a Daily Grief Mediation email, ways to cope, resources, mediations and prayers and articles to help you connect with the wide range of emotions. Please email me at brenda@hnmparish.org to sign up. I am also a thanatologist and grief minister and am offering over the phone pastoral counseling to you. Please call me at ext. 137 to make an appointment. 8 PASSION OF THE LORD
A Prayer Amid an Epidemic By Kerry Weber Jesus Christ, you traveled through towns and villages “curing every disease and illness.” At your command, the sick were made well. Come to our aid now, in the midst of the global spread of the coronavirus, that we may ex- perience your healing love. Heal those who are sick with the virus. May they regain their strength and health through quality medical care. Heal us from our fear, which prevents nations from working together and neighbors from helping one another. Heal us from our pride, which can make us claim invulnerability to a disease that knows no borders. Jesus Christ, healer of all, stay by our side in this time of uncertainty and sorrow. Be with those who have died from the virus. May they be at rest with you in your eternal peace. Be with the families of those who are sick or have died. As they worry and grieve, defend them from illness and despair. May they know your peace. Be with the doctors, nurses, researchers and all medical pro- fessionals who seek to heal and help those affected and who put them- selves at risk in the process. May they know your protection and peace. Be with the leaders of all nations. Give them the foresight to act with charity and true concern for the well-being of the people they are meant to serve. Give them the wisdom to invest in long-term solutions that will help prepare for or prevent future outbreaks. May they know your peace, as they work together to achieve it on earth. Whether we are home or abroad, sur- rounded by many people suffering from this illness or only a few, Jesus Christ, stay with us as we endure and mourn, persist and prepare. In place of our anxiety, give us your peace. Jesus Christ, heal us. Kerry Weber is an executive editor of America. www.americamagazine.org APRIL 5, 2020 9
