NZCCA Conference Counsellor Care: Nourishing Mind & Spirit Registration Brochure 19-21 September 2019 Jet Park Auckland Airport Hotel
Welcome Dear practitioners, On a chilly clear Waikato morning, with dew on the grass, I (Frank) see the sun coming over the Kaimai ranges, experiencing the warmth of the sun rays... a song starts to rise in me: “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, His mercies never come to an end...” As people who hear so many trauma stories from others, we need to remember God’s unconditional love, mercy and grace, especially this year with so many in our beautiful nation deeply impacted by the shootings in Christchurch. Now more than ever we need to stay connected with our Creator, the Source of all Life. In light of this, we highly recommend NZCCA’s National Conference in Auckland with the theme: “Counsellor Care: Nourishing Mind and Spirit.” As Christian practitioners we need nourishment to keep us vibrant, perceptive and being able to give to the other. Isaiah 50:4 says: “The Sovereign Lord has given me an instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being taught.” May you be nourished at this Conference, receiving new insights from neurosurgeon Dr David Levy and the many workshop presenters. May your mind and spirit be refreshed connecting with colleagues from across Aotearoa, while enjoying excellent food at this new venue, the Jet Park Airport Hotel (with convenient complimentary airport shuttle). Looking forward to connecting with many of you! Frank Eijgenraam and Derek Borland Co-chairs NZCCA

“I have very much enjoyed RIDAY WORKSHOP F the conference.... the content was SESSIONS interesting, challenging and moving... Christianity & Te Tiriti O Waitangi loved it!” with Jay Ruka Jay will be sharing a brief but fascination history of Christianity in New Zealand and its influence in the shaping of Te Tiriti O Waitangi and why it is important for us to be carriers of our collective story. Jay Ruka Jay brings a creative twist to many topics of culture and Christian faith and is passionate about exploring the missional history of New Zealand and how the gospel interacts with the Māori world. He communicates a vision for the future of Aotearoa, highlighting the significance of Te Ao Māori and the beauty of cultural partnership. From Fledging to Flying with Shannon Mawdsley Joy, expansion, adventure, freedom, fun – all ways of sustaining us, and often di- minishing with the weight of work and life. We can get stuck knowing there is more, and not being able to step into it… much like a fledgling perched on the edge of the nest, needing to fly but hesitating to launch into the unknown. Afraid of the risk but needing to leave for its growth and to discover the exhilaration of soaring. This experiential workshop is designed to help you identify what keeps you on the edge of the nest and how to launch out and soar into a more life-giving way of being. The tools explored are developed from the work of Tara Mohr’s Playing Big programme, neuropsychotherapy, and narrative therapy and can be applied to all areas of life and will be helpful for your personal growth and professional work. Shannon Mawdsley Shannon has been counselling for 10 years in private practice and the secondary school environment. She delights in seeing people released into a stronger sense of their identity and purpose in the world. Recently she has moved into a Pastoral Care position in her church and a volunteer role as the NZ Co-ordinator for Servants to Asia’s Urban Poor. NZCCA Conference 6 Registration Brochure
The power of’ presence’ for sustainability in therapeutic and education work with Dr James Arkwright Drawing from a reasonably disparate group of authors and their ideas – such as Walter Brueggemann’s concept of the ‘prophetic imagination’, James K A Smith’s (2009) thesis on ‘cultural liturgies’, Block, Brueggemann & McKnight’s (2016) challenge concerning ‘the new right and consumerist culture’, David Smith’s (2011) ideas on ‘experiential learning and faith’, Robert Neimeyer’s (2002) notion about ‘presence, process and procedure’, Bonnie Badenoch’s (2018) argument about shift- ing the balance from our ‘left (brain) centred culture’, Johnella Bird’s (2004) practice of ‘relational languaging’, Emily Esfahani Smith’s (2017) discussion about ‘the power of meaning’, and Marion Sanders (2018) ‘memoirs of the Holy Spirit’s leading’ with- in professional practice – James discusses and explores ideas about the ‘presence of God’ and ‘self’ within our work as counsellors, ministers/pastors and counsellor educators. As such, the workshop will be a mix of James’ conceptualising and sharing personal and professional vignettes, combined with small group work and participant engagement. James Arkwright James has been a counsellor for 25 years and a counsellor educator for almost 20 years. He has worked in a variety of community, health and education settings and currently works at Bethlehem Tertiary Institute (BTI) where he holds the role of Head of School of Social Practice, which offers undergraduate programmes in counselling, family studies and social work. ACC Update with Gillian Pow & Angelika Weinheimer This workshop will cover information for counsellors who don’t already work for ACC and particularly on the ISSC contract, to encourage their involvement and participation in this area of work. Gillian and Angelika will also provide an update of ACC and ISSC contract information for those counsellors already undertaking ACC work. We’re very grateful that Gillian and Angelika are available to share their knowledge and expertise with us at Conference this year. “…thanks for a wonderful ATURDAY WORKSHOP S conference. I found it a great experience feeling SESSIONS nurtured on every level – spiritually, emotionally, relationally, intellectually and physically...” Sacred Soul Care with Susannah Connolly We will explore ‘desire’ and how to best understand our own desires and how these get kicked around by the work we do. Believing them to be the most honest experiences of our True Selves we become free. Knowing our desires within our lives, our work is the fullness of what is gifted us, in this there are no ought, no should’s, no have to’s. By affirming our desires we know our place in the world, can do self care well, and handle the chaos. Susannah Connolly Creative spiritual director/Supervisor/life coach. Susannah loves to explore life out- side the box. Experiencing unknowing of God, Self and other and in this frees all to be all they can be. Susannah lives at Peacemakers retreat centre, paints, plays, sings and lives to be a sacred expression of Love. Using Art as Therapy with Nyawira Kuria Today art therapy is well known as a successful therapy that may enable patients to heal whether in churches, hospitals, schools, rehabilitation centers, communi- ty clinics, and crisis centers. Art therapy is a practice that has integrated art and psychology whereby the creative process using different materials facilitates those in treatment to develop several skills such as self-awareness, explore emotions, address unresolved emotional conflict and for self-expression. Art therapy harness- es the power of expressing one-self and can prompt one to dig deep, express, and explore their inner self in new ways, such as release buried feelings, and express their true self, which may have been otherwise difficult. In this workshop, the focus will therefore be on art as a tool for exploring the benefits in-order to facilitate the nourishment of the mind and the spirit. Tools for the workshop will involve using a variety of art materials, such as paper, and paint colored markers so as to create images as thoughts and process them through discussion. Nyawira Kuria I am a Doctoral candidate in psychology at United States International University and my research is “Art Therapy as a Treatment for Depression: The Case of Langa- ta Women’s Prison Nairobi Kenya”; Masters holder in counselling from University of Durham, UK; and Bachelor of arts in fine art from Kenyatta University. I am currently employed by University of Nairobi as an Assistant Dean of Students College of architecture and engineering, previously headed the counselling centre, and I was part of the task force that drafted the disability policy for the University of Nairobi. Counterintuitive stories: How seven LGB Christian narratives can reshape our understanding and praxis. with Amanda Pilbrow Amanda’s research stems from the desire to understand what citizenship (for all) looks like in the kingdom of God. Growing up in an environment where women were unable to use their gifts in certain areas of ministry, Amanda briefly shares her personal journey of ‘unlearning’ around historical understanding’s and interpreta- tion’s of Scripture. In turn, this process of unlearning sharpened her attention to- wards the tensions between faith and diverse sexuality LGB Christians now contend with. Amanda has been investigating how seven LGB Christians have navigated faith and sexuality. Through this research prevailing interpretive frameworks have been revealed with the participants’ context. Amanda presents an informative overview of why stories, messy and unexpected, both within and outside of Scripture, are so imperative in shaping theology and applied praxis. Amanda Pilbrow Amanda is married to Bruce (30 years) and has 3 adult children, and a fabulous daughter and son in-law. She is inked with images that convey God’s continued movement towards us and stories that have shaped her personal journey. Amanda was a Young Adults pastor who learnt from her community the gap between a lived reality and orthodoxy. She is naturally inquisitive, loves to read, travel, paint, write and enjoys the occasional Hendrick’s gin and cucumber. Strengthening Ethical Practice with NZCCA Ethics Committee Counsellors engage with clients in complex situations; where there are a rubric cube of expectations from the: client, organisation, the law and the counsellor. This can result in counsellors feeling torn between competing views, expectations and priorities. This workshop will allow attendees to: • Meet the current members of the Ethics Committee, find out about what the Ethics Committee does, give feedback to the Ethics Committee and find out about the process for applying to come involved. • Learn about some available resources (i.e. before buying a book online it is helpful to be able to have a chance to look through it first). • Q&A time. • Perhaps discuss a fictional case study (via multiple viewpoints of what should the counsellor, colleague and supervisor do in this situation).
