CHANEL NEWS Term 2 — Week 6 —29 May 2020 — VOLUME 53 Dr Susan Bunkum—Principal The return of all students to school on Monday marked a significant moment in our journey through the Covid-19 pandemic. I have had conversations with many students this week. The message that consistently emerged from these conversations was that students had really missed the daily routine, the company of their friends, and learning in a real, rather than a virtual classroom. Personally, I experienced school, in the absence of students, to be a lonely and empty place! Several times during the period of learning from home, I found myself considering the old saying that, “you don’t know what you have got, until it’s gone”, and realising that much wisdom underpins this adage. Thus, as we emerge - hopefully forever - from the circumstances which changed the face of schooling for several weeks, I am convinced more than ever, that education is about much more than course content alone. That course content is important is a given; however, the context in which content is delivered – classrooms with students and teachers immersed in conversation, dialogue and meaningful activity – is critical to student engagement in, and ownership of, their learning. So, it is, that at the end of this first week of some semblance of normalcy, I thank students, teachers and parents, for the hard work that has occurred over several weeks of learning from home, and I extend a warm ‘Welcome back to Chanel’ to all students. Kind regards, Susan Bunkum

At Pentecost we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles gathered in the upper room in Jerusalem and this event marks the beginning of the Christian Church. The story of Pentecost is found in the Acts of the Apostles and tells us that the promise of Jesus was fulfilled. At Pentecost, Jesus’ followers were transformed – their lives were changed forever. Having received the Holy Spirit these followers of Jesus who had been frightened and hesitant previously, went out boldly and without fear to preach the message of Jesus. SCIENCE Jodie Cameron Science at Chanel College is back in the laboratory, and that means hands-on activities! Year 7 Science students welcomed the opportunity to engage in some practical investigations this week. They have been consolidating their understanding of forces and friction. Students eagerly participated in these activities that helped them to thoroughly understand the topics. Next week we look forward to more investigations about magnetism. Year 8 Science students returned to the college keen to share information about the Plant Research Project they have been conducting at home. Their enthusiasm has been evident in our conversations. This week Year 8 students have also practised using microscopes to view some fascinating cells that are part of organ systems which relates to current learning. Some students found this to be more agreeable than the queasy feelings experienced when exploring the digestive system. This week Year 9 Science students have been investigating electricity, sym- bols used in circuit diagrams, Ohm's Law, and the difference between parallel and series circuits. Predictions about the current and voltage that might be observed at points of different circuits were made. Lively conversations followed that included students calling on The Law of Conservation of Energy to support their ed- ucated scientific opinion.
