Breydon Cootware - TCS Graduate 2018 I chose to interview Breydon after following him and his woodworking business, Cootware Custom Woodworking (CCW), on Facebook. I remember him as a student here, just a few years ago. Now he’s making rather impressive works of art, and some decent pocket change, and he hasn’t even graduated from high school yet! When I sat down with him (socially distant, of course) I found that his “Catholic career” was very interesting. I hope you enjoy his story. Breydon attended Trinity starting in kindergarten, and continued through 6th grade. He has many fond memories of Trinity. He said the friends he made at Trinity are still his friends, and he believes they’ll be life long friends. He also misses recess with them. While they were mischievous, they were good kids (confirmed by Trinity faculty). He Mrs. Behrens commissioned Breydon to make a cornhole set to give away at one of misses the yummy lunches and treats, and he also misses the Annual her community family events. Trinity Halloween Party. Another piece of Trinity that Breydon really misses, is religion as part of his daily schooling. While religion is, of course, a class at Trinity, it’s also in- fused into all we do. Whether it’s morning prayer as a whole school, praying before snacks or meals, pausing to say a Hail Mary for an ambulance racing through town, or reminders to follow in Jesus’ foot- steps, the Holy Spirit fills these hallways. Breydon shared a special memory with me. In 5th grade, he was given as assignment by Mrs. Borsellino (a pilar of the TCS community) to study a saint and Breydon got Padre Pio. In doing his research, he couldn’t believe how “amazing” the story was! It was during this time that he decided to receive the sacraments of Baptism, First Communion and Confirmation. Mrs. Borsellino had always encouraged him to “give it a thought”, and he felt that this was the right time. He enrolled in the RCIC program and completed it in 7th grade and received the sacraments. Fittingly, he chose Mrs. Borsellino as his Godmother. In addition to the great religious foundation that Breydon received, he also says the academic education at TCS was “amazing” and helped him so much going forward. On more than one occasion he’s been “picked out” as a Trinity student and that makes him really proud. In February 2020, he made his first sale with CCW and that’s kept him busy ever since! He buys the lumber, measures (twice) and cuts (once) and assembles all of his projects. He’s also “got a guy” that makes wraps to go on the front of the corn hole games. That’s a lot of business dealings for a 10th grader! In addition to the corn hole games, he also makes wooden flags, cutting boards and coat racks. He’s looking forward to college, in an unrelated field, but for now, he’s enjoying this hobby. As he said, “I’m not working because I love my job.” A custom flag made by Rsspectfully submitted by Sarah Tsibulsky Cootware Custom Woodworking
A note on this year’s theme from Mrs. Borsellino: Trinity Catholic School’s theme for the school year 2021-22 is “Behold! New Life Has Come.” Is this possible? New life after the uncertainty of the last two years of school? Knowing that God is always with us, his arms wrapped tightly around us gives us the strength we need each day to continue our faith journey – together. New life through the steadfastness of our priests, principal, support staff, teachers, students and families. New life through our benefactors and prayers from our community. Daily our students work to grow in the core values of living our faith, accepting responsibility, promoting teamwork, achieving excellence and inspiring leadership. It is the Christ-centered academic environment of Trinity Catholic School that nurtures educational excellence and the spiritual growth of all our students. The light of Christ shines forth allowing us to continue to do the best in the situation that we’re given. Checking in with former Trinity teacher and parent, Darcy Cartin: My name is Darcy Cartin. I taught at Trinity Catholic School for nineteen years. Our children, Ryan and Alyssa, attended school at Trinity from Pre-K through Grade 6. When my husband Steve informed me that General Motors in Massena was closing I was so confused. How could this happen when we grew up and had lived here all of our lives? God had a plan which I wasn’t aware of at that point. We packed up and moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana in 2008. After substituting and working in public schools I decided this wasn’t the life for me. I am blessed to say after thirteen years I have accepted a position at a local Catholic School which I consider my “home away from home.” I can say without a doubt in my mind, next to the influence of parents, Catholic education has made the biggest impact in our children's lives. We are forever grateful for the sacrifices made by parents, teachers, and administrators over the years that have helped build their faith. The strong sense of community was very evident at Trinity. The vigorous academics, along with the structure that was provided was a tremendous boost for our children . When we moved to Indiana several teach- ers informed us that our children were ahead of the curriculum. Our hats off to Trinity! I loved the education of the whole child. Trinity teachers strived to form the entire person of each student and help them grow into the person God has called them to be. Teaching the virtues has been ingrained in the Catholic School curriculum. It’s about treating people as Christ would. It was truly evident that the students behaved respectfully towards each other and their teachers. The All School Masses and other opportunities for prayer was a blessing. This gave the children the opportunity to participate in Mass by cantoring, doing readings, altar serving, and bringing forth the gifts. Whenever I walk into a Catholic school I notice the unique art- work, statues, and crucifixes. These are obvious reminders to me of what our faith is all about. I will leave you with this final thought; Be it known to all who enter Trinity that Christ is the reason for this school. The unseen but ever present teacher in its classes. The model of its faculty. The inspiration of its students
As we all know, 2020-2021 was a very unusual school year. We were so happy to have the students, faculty and staff back in the building! While many things had to change, we still found fun ways to learn, and celebrate our faith. Mrs. Witkop’s 6th grade class out on a fitness walk during Wellness Week.
