AQUINAS & ST. MARY’S CATHOLIC SCHOOLS THE TORCH www.aquinas-catholic.com September, 2021 2021-22 Theme Dear Friends of Aquinas Catholic, This month I would like to highlight some of the great things that our Campus Ministry and priest theol- ogy teachers are doing here at Aquinas. From our second to last strategic planning in 2015, it was decided that we needed a dedicated person to coordinate and assist with the spiritual exercises and faith formation of our K- 12 students. While we are very blessed to have 7 priests teaching at Aquinas Catholic, they also have many par- ish responsibilities, and do not have a lot of extra time to organize and execute everything that our students need in order to grow in their faith and prayer life. Mrs. Beth Nemec is in her fourth year as our Director of Ministry, and with the assistance and guidance of Aquinas Chaplain Fr. Ben Holdren, she has significantly raised the level of faith and prayer among our stu- dents at Aquinas. We at Aquinas believe that spiritual direction (small group or one on one meetings) is one of the best ways to help each of our high school students (10th-12th) navigate through ups and downs of adoles- cence, and most importantly, grow in their love of God via personal and liturgical prayer. Freshman may partici- pate upon request. All of our high school, middle school, and elementary teachers also see a priest, religious or lay person for spiritual direction. Since it is our teachers who most closely engaged with your children at Aquinas, it is im- portant that they not only teach the faith, but are witnesses to it as well. That goes a long way for students. I am grateful to Beth and to our priests who generously give of their time to serve as spiritual directors. We are also blessed to have two lay women and a religious sister volunteering to serve as directors for our students and teachers. Aquinas Catholic Campus Ministry is active in providing Monthly FIRE events that focus on creating and sustaining holy friendships. Eucharistic Adoration and Praise & Worship are also a part of FIRE, which is sometimes coordinated together with Bishop Neumann’s group in Wahoo. FIRE is a great way for our Aquinas students to grow and share their faith in a practical way amongst friends, as well as establishing new Christ- centered friendships with Bishop Neumann students. The main focus for our Student Fall Retreats this year was to encounter different people who have cho- sen to live a devout Catholic life. Aquinas students went to seven different locations for a whole school day in order to pray and learn more about the Who, What, When, Why and How of some nearby Catholic friends of ours: 6th grade, Marian Sisters, Waverly. 7th grade, Carmelite Sisters, Agnew. 8th grade, Holy Family Shrine, Gretna and Boys Town, Omaha. 9th grade, St. Gregory the Great Seminary, Seward. 10th grade, John Paul II Newman Center, Omaha. 11th grade, Hope of the Poor Missions, Omaha. 12th grade, University of Nebraska Newman Center, Lincoln Please continue to pray for all of us at Aquinas Catholic Schools, especially that we will be faithful in providing clearly Catholic faith formation for our students, your children. Yours in Christ, Fr. Sean M. Timmerman
2021-22 May, 2021 Theme Principal Report Tri-Council Schedule Thursday, October 21st from 2:00 – 4:00 and 4:30 – 7:00 p.m. Aquinas Tri-Councils will be held on Thursday, October 21st from 2:00 – 4:00 and 4:30 – 7:00p.m. School will dismiss at 1:00 so we can start conferences at 2:00. Busses will run accordingly and school lunch will be served. We hope that offering afternoon and evening sessions will help to make conferences available to as many parents as possible. You are welcome to attend at any time during these hours as we are not assigning specific times for individual meetings. Conferences will be held in the teacher’s classrooms this fall. We feel it will be much easier to so- cial distance in the classrooms rather than in the gymnasium. We will do our best to prevent groups from forming. If you have a teacher or teachers that you definitely need to see, we would encourage you to do so as we feel good communication between the parent and teacher is very important. If you are happy with the progress of the class and your student I would ask that you try not to add to an existing line simp- ly to say hello. To help you decide which teachers need to be on your must-see list the report cards will be sent home with your student on Wednesday, October 20th. This will give you time to discuss the report cards as a family before you come on Thursday. We will send a reminder that report cards are coming home with students. Please keep in mind that some teachers may have well over 100 students per day. For this reason we ask the teachers and parents to please limit their conference time if a line begins to form. If you need more time with a teacher you may make an appointment to meet with the teacher at another time. You may also e-mail our teachers at any time if you have questions or concerns. E-mail addresses can be found here. College Planning Presentation Mr. Svec is arranging a college planning representative to be at Aquinas during Tri-Councils on Thursday, October 21st. More details will be shared closer to Tri-Councils as they are confirmed. Stay tuned! John Baylor Prep Update The John Baylor Program is in full swing. Seniors are taking the refresher course, juniors are taking the ACT Prep course, and the sophomores will begin their program soon. Please encourage your student to invest time and effort into this program. We are excited to bring this program into the school and encourage you to help us maximize your student’s success. For more in- formation on this program visit their website: http://www.johnbaylorprep.com/ God Bless! Spencer Zysset, Principal

2021-22 Aquinas Elementary... Theme Kindergarten News This week the Kindergarteners learned about the season of Fall. They did all kinds of art and STEM projects, including building a spider web out of tape and string. Then they got to test their web by stacking linking cubes on top to see how many they could balance. They did an awesome job and even took time to recon- struct them to hold more! Mrs. Katie Vavrina & Mrs Alison Fozzard FIRST GRADE! First graders are hard at work learning addition math facts. By the end of first grade we hope to have mastered all facts from 0+0 to 10+10. We will have close to 60 addition facts to know quickly in order to make more advanced math problems in second grade and up easier. If we know all of our addition math facts then we will be able to master the sub- traction facts as well. The only way to be fluent at these facts is to practice each night and make sure to practice the more diffi- cult ones a few extra times. As we learn our facts, we also learn strategies to help us find the answers and remember them. One strategy is to count on. We start with the larger number and count on to find the answer. We used our dot cubes to practice this strategy. Then with a partner, we graphed the numbers that we rolled. We were excited to share which numbers we rolled the most and the fewest times. Soon we will use our ipads to practice our facts. We’ll be using IXL and Xtra Math. These apps can also be used at home for ex- tra practice. Mrs. Kelly Tvrdy & Mrs. Sandy Vavrina
Aquinas Elementary... Third Grade News We are off to a great start so far! The students are learning their routine. We are already well into our math lessons. We have reviewed some math facts, using a number line, reading a thermometer and telling time to the hour, half hour and five minute increments. The Third graders are spending a little extra time at the beginning of the year to learn some typing skills. This will be a big benefit as they start typing paragraphs and even short papers in the upcoming years. This year we are lucky to have Father Litt from Shelby visiting our classrooms each week. He will help us with our Religion instruction. We are looking forward to a great year! Mrs. LaDonna Naiberk & Mrs. Tina Janak Forth Grade… The fourth graders have si- lent reading time each day. Here are some students from Mr. Beller's class en- joying reading alone with a comfortable pillow, healthy snack, and drink! Mr. Marc Beller & Mrs. Julie Smith

College Signing Night The procedure for those students who are “signing” with a college to par- ticipate in a sport is as follows: Aquinas will have one single signing night on April 27th, 2022 at 7:00pm when the students will wear a t-shirt representing the college they will be attending. We will take a group pic- ture of all students from the class who have signed with a college. This group picture will be submitted by the school to the Banner Press for publishing and used on social media. Once the group photo is taken, we will then provide an opportunity to take individual pictures of the stu- dents with their parents, coaches, etc. We will no longer set up for indi- vidual signing sessions with colleges at the school. If the college wants to do so, they can arrange that with the student and parents, but the school will not set up for or be a part of that event.

Students are attending JBP once a week during the school day and have been given a log in /password giving the 24/7 access to the material at www.johnbaylorprep.com. Baylor explains his program as 80% content, 10% test-taking strategies and 10% motiva- tion. Motivated students can expect to see a 2-3 point jump in test scores, motivation to prepare for their future, and an overall improvement in academic work. A reluctant student will pick up on catchy phrases used and strategies that can improve their academics.
