PROVIDENCIA PRESS JANUARY 2021 Jennifer Culbertson, Principal Dear Providencia Families, Happy New Year! During the month of January, Providencia is focusing on the character trait of acceptance. Acceptance is understanding and celebrating the ways that each person is different and unique. When we show acceptance, we make others feel valuable and loved- regardless of our differences. There are many things in life that we have a choice over. However, people cannot choose the way we are born. The color of our skin, our gender, the type of family we are born into, and many other things are out of our control. This is why one of the most important things that we can do is to teach children acceptance of “different” kinds of people. Rather than a sit-down lesson, this is done through our own daily actions and interactions. The example we set through our daily behavior is the one our children will learn most from. The most important message to convey is that people may look different, but each person has a heart and feelings that matter; everyone deserves to be treated equally. Acceptance of others and teaching our children acceptance starts with us because as parents we are the most influential human beings in our child’s life. Educating children on acceptance of others and of themselves creates a sense of justice; when you have a sense of justice you create a better and kinder world. Here are some ways we can teach acceptance to our children every day: Think before you speak. Is this kind? Don’t use mean or nasty word to describe a person. Imagine that person is you. Role model acceptance every day. Read books that have a variety of different characters and cover different cultures. Explain that differences may not be physical; differences show up in many ways. Teach children compassion and empathy. Teach young children that everyone is unique. Explain to children that everyone even thinks differently. Throughout the month of January, our students will be learning about acceptance- what it means, why it is important, and how to get better at it. Learning happens best when it is done both at school and at home. Here are some discussion points to help you talk about acceptance with your child: What do you think acceptance means and why is it important? Tell me about a student who is different than you. How can your difference be a good thing? What is one way you can show acceptance at school? Has anyone ever made you feel accepted? Tell me about it. What would the world look like if everyone was the same? If we endow our children with both healthy self-esteem and respect for those who are different, we help them grow into adults who will celebrate diversity. Thank you for partnering with us. With gratitude, Jen Culbertson
A Note from the School Nurse by Peggy Kurihara RN The Health Office wishes all our Providencia Families a Happy New Year! We hope that you had a restful, healthy, and meaningful winter break together with those living in your home. As we start the new year, it is so important that we observe and practice safe measures as we deal with the continuing Covid - 19 Pandemic. In addition to physical distancing and wearing a face mask, hand washing is the one practice that not only helps to decrease the spread of the virus that causes Covid - 19 but also helps to prevent the spread of the flu virus and other viral, bacterial and fungal infections. Attached is a video to share with your children. It was taken from the National Association of School Nurses website. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1XZeIyKJXi7txkxvb0yzFFHCWOs3i3t95/view Here are the steps in the hand washing process: 1. Wet hands using either warm or cold running water. 2. Apply soap to the palm of one hand. 3. Wash hands together apart from the running water. Wash palms together, in between fingers by interlocking fingers, the backs of the hands, the wrist areas, and under the nails by rubbing the nails of one hand in the palm of the other hand and vice versa. This process should take at least 20 seconds or about the length of leisurely singing the A-B-C Song. 4. Rinse both hands under running water. 5. Dry hands using clean paper towel or cloth towel. 6. If in a public restroom, apply the used paper towel to turn off the faucet and on the door knob to leave the restroom.. Wash your hands before eating or touching your face. Wash your hands after using the restroom, sneezing or coughing, playing outside, touching your face or touching your pets. Please do not hesitate to reach out by email to Izabelle Martinez (izabellemartinez@burbankusd.org) or me if you have any questions. Remember, "Healthy Students, with clean hands, Learn Better." MESSAGES FROM OUR PTA PRESIDENT Welcome back to school and happy 2021! I hope everyone had a wonderful break. PTA is very excited to start a new semester, and we have a lot of fun things coming up in the next couple of months. Thank you to everyone who participated in our first Family Dine Out Night at Panda Express last month. We don’t have the final total in yet, but I know I certainly enjoyed a night off from cooking. We will be planning a few more of these events in the future, so please be on the lookout. If you have any suggestions for restaurants, please let me know. We are always looking for new places to try!! This is an exciting time for PTA! If you've ever wondered what PTA does, or want to find ways to become more involved in the programs at school, please come check out one of our meetings. Our next meeting will be on January 19th at 7:00pm via Zoom. In February the PTA Association will nominate the board for the 2021-2022 school year. Any PTA member (those who paid their membership) can join the board and help create the future for your child's school. Lastly, please don’t forget there are a couple ways you can support PTA without even trying. 1. Register your Ralphs Rewards card at www.Ralphs.com. Just create an account, login, and click Community Rewards to search for Providencia and link to your card. PTA gets a few thousand dollars a year from just a small percentage of families with linked cards. It really is the easiest way to earn money for our PTA. 2. Link Providencia Elementary to your Amazon Smile account. It’s another way for PTA to earn money, and who doesn’t love shopping on Amazon shopping! I’m looking forward to a great rest of the school year! Becky Mullins PTA President

If your student is “capped” out of their home school, you are then placed on a waiting list for your home school in the order of your enrollment date. You will be notified of your student’s placement through phone call and/or email. The placement school will complete the enrollment process so there is a minimum amount of disruption to you and your child. We do everything we can to avoid moving students, but there are times it is necessary due to space limitations.
