‘Ad Vitam Paramus’ ‘We are Preparing for Life’. Supportive Follow us on Twitter @westcravenhigh Friday 18 June 2021 We can be followed @WestCravenHighSchool “Be strong, be fearless, be beautiful. And believe that anything is possible when you have the right people there to support you.” Misty Copeland Key Messages I hope that this E-bulletin finds you and your family well. Supportive is our core value of the week. Congratulations to all our ASPIRE award winners featured later in this E- Bulletin who received the most supportive points this week. Well done! Following a small number of positive cases among students in school, mainly in Year 9, we continued to offer on-site testing to all consenting students on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Thankfully, all students tested negative. This gives us confidence that we have effectively identified all close contacts to those who previously tested positive. I look forward to welcoming back students from self-isolation next week and thank everyone at home for supporting our efforts in keeping our school community safe. If your child is self-isolating and well enough, encourage them to log onto ClassCharts and MS Teams to keep up-to-date with all school work. If you have any technical difficulties with logging on, or your child needs a password reset please drop us an email at help@westcraven.co.uk As always, please keep your child at home if they display any classic COVID symptoms of a continuous cough, high temperature, or experience a loss of taste, and book a PCR test. Recent research from King’s College London and the NHS suggests that a headache, sore throat and runny nose are now the most commonly reported symptoms among younger people linked to the latest COVID variants. Please be vigilant as it would be easy to mistake these as symptoms of a common cold. My advice is that if you are in doubt, book a PCR test. As previously reported, we have cancelled our new Year 7 transition day to protect both primary and secondary bubbles. However, we will be hosting an information evening for all new students to attend school in person with one family member. To allow for social distancing and to ensure the safety of this event, we will be offering four identical sessions which you will be able to book online. I will write to all new Year 7 students with further details. Please save the date: the sessions will take place on 30 June and 1 July with a choice of either 3.30pm or 5.30pm. Our Year 10 geography students have been busy this week preparing for their much anticipated field trip to Malham next Tuesday, which is a requirement of the GCSE course. I look forward to sharing photographs and a roundup of their experience next week. The next few weeks are very important as students from all year groups will be taking end of year assessments. Please support your child in preparing for these exams. As part of our drive as a Reading Academy, Year 7 students joined an interactive webinar on Wednesday from author Nicky Singer, who read from her new book 'The Survival Game' based around the plight of a refugee girl travelling from central Africa to the North of Scotland. This sparked a lively discussion around the issues of climate change. There's just over a week to go until this year's national Thank a Teacher Day. You can send a card to anyone working in school (school leaders, teachers, teaching assistants, and all support staff such as office staff, pastoral staff, lunchtime supervisors, caretakers, and cleaners) using this link: https://thankateacher.co.uk/thank-a.../thank-a- teacher-form/ and at the same time, why not also nominate your favourite West Craven staff in the Pendle Education Trust Inspire Awards - https://www.westcraven.co.uk/inspire-awards-2021/1171.html Please stay safe and, as always, get in touch if I can help or support in any way. Staff should continue to test themselves and report results whilst encouraging secondary school and college students to do likewise. Reporting test results can be done simply and quickly, from mobiles, online or by phone, and should be completed straightaway. Reporting not only supports contact tracing in the event of a positive case but also assists our understanding of community rates of infection. To help in communicating the importance of testing and reporting, we have produced a blog on why reporting your test result is as important as taking a test, featuring further guidance and common questions. This also includes details on financial support available to parents whose children are asked to self-isolate after contact with a positive case. Please share this in your newsletters and communications with pupils and parents. Geography Year 7 geographers investigating our outdoor spaces and making decisions based on their findings. Students also used specialist equipment to measure microclimate including anemometers, thermometers and lux meters.
Geography Year 7 have been practising their data presentation and analysis skills to decide which site around school would be best for new picnic benches. They have written reports to Mrs Foy explaining their choices and why these are important. They had to choose between the front of school, the Year7 courtyard, the playing field and the hardstanding at the rear of school. The overwhelming majority chose site 4, the hardstanding at the rear of school for new picnic benches. Ava chose site 3 'It has the highest sunlight levels, with light SE winds and the surroundings were pleasant.’ Theo chose site 4 'The results of my environmental survey showed it be one of the safest, cleanest and greenest places in school. I really liked the view.'
Geography Year 7 working exceptionally hard on their geography fieldwork write ups. Miss Sumner was super impressed!
RE Year 7 have been preparing for their end of year assessment in RE by creating these fantastic revision clocks which will help them to know more and remember more.
English On Wednesday, 16 June, Year 7 students enjoyed being part of the Pop Up Festival. They joined an interactive webinar from Nicky Singer, author of both adult and chldren’s books. Throughout the webinar she read from her new book 'The Survival Game' which is based around the plight of a refugee girl travelling from central Africa to the North of Scotland. Nicky spoke about her concerns over climate change and the problems of refugees around the world. She also gave the students information on how she researches her books and answered student questions on this and other topics. Director of English, Mrs Stoker loved the sound of her book and through it would be a great addition to our scheme of work on ‘Survival.’

Edinburgh Fringe Festival Freya to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival Talented, Year 8 student Freya Hutchinson has been given the huge opportunity to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2022. Freya has been part of the drama company ‘Stage Door Youth Theatre’ for the past four years and she is thrilled that she is one of seven drama students to be selected to perform at the festival; Edinburgh Fringe is a world leading celebration of arts and culture and takes place during the month of August. To be able to attend Freya has to raise money through fund raising. So far her team have completed a cyclothon, where they cycled the equivalent distance from John O’Groats to Land’s End (874 miles), she is also arranging bake sales, car boot sales and drama events. Good luck in meeting your fundraising target Freya! Science and Conservation A simple “bee bar” to make Bee populations are rapidly declining around the world due to habitat loss, pollution and the use of pesticides, among other factors. “These creatures are vital to what we eat and what our countryside looks like,” says Gill Perkins, Chief Executive of the Bumblebee Conservation Trust. Just like us, they need to drink regularly; help keep them hydrated by putting out a daily “bee bar” in your garden. A small tub, like the one illustrated, with some stones in is perfect!

We are a Reading Academy Why We Love Non-Fiction As a reading academy, we live by our school motto: ‘Ad Vitam Paramus’ - ‘We are preparing for life’, and non-fiction certainly plays its role in supporting this across the school curriculum. We aim to foster an interest in cultural, topical and informative reading to prepare our students for adult life. While encouraging questioning and critical thinking, and building a functional, adult vocabulary, reading non-fiction also allows children to follow their interests and immerse themselves in the subjects they are interested in. When we feel we know things about the world around us, we can be more confident members of the community. Euro 2020 Celebrations To embrace the EURO 2020 celebrations and as part of our Year 9 non-fiction unit of learning, we are excited to welcome Sky Sports television reporter Peter Stevenson, who will be visiting later in June to deliver a virtual Q&A session with our Year 9 students. Peter will be sharing his career journey, anecdotes from his experiences in sports journalism and taking questions from students. In preparation for Peter’s visit, students will be engaged in some Euro 2020 non-fiction reading activities next week. Examples of non-fiction texts to read and share at home… Letters Film and music reviews Diaries Blogs Newspaper articles Fashion magazines Autobiographies Information leaflets Interviews Magazine articles Travel guides Biographies Book reviews Gaming magazines Sports reviews Advertisements History Journals Reading quote of the week… “Life is like a game of football. You need goals.”
