Bithell struck gold in the men’s 49er sailing followed by Walls winning the omnium track cycling event. stayintouch@cromptonhouse.org Joining forces It was a wonderful surprise to welcome back ex-student Tyla Hoyle when the 5th Regiment Royal Arllery (The Yorkshire Gunners) supported school in early July with our ongoing COVID tesng regime. Gunner Hoyle said, ‘It was a great opportunity to come back to my old school. It was exciting to see familiar faces and be able to help Crompton House’s pupil testing programme. As soldiers we look forward to deploying on operations and the chance to serve this close to home makes it even more special.’ Deputy Headteacher, Mr Danyel Dunkley (pictured below) commented, ‘It was great to see the Army assisting us in the testing today, it was made even better, to see one of our old students among them. We wish Tyla and her fellow Gunners well, and thanks for your service.’ Lucy goes for gold Congratulations to Lucy Hill in Year 9 who represented Oldham Schools at the Greater Manchester Schools Athletics Association competition at Trafford on Saturday 12th June. Lucy took the gold medal in the ‘Hammer’ event and is now eligible for potential selection for the English Schools Championships. Lucy is a member of Bury Athletics Club.

stayintouch@cromptonhouse.org Learning Zone Comic Books and Graphic Novels on Sora! Does reading comic books and graphic novels count as ‘real’ reading? Absolutely! They use images in comic book style as well as less words helping to entice reluctant readers and assisting struggling readers to devel- op the reading skills required to comprehend texts with higher levels of difficulty. Sora has a great selection including Manga (Japanese comic books) for our students to enjoy. Here are a few recommendations. Sora and ‘Together We Read’ - September 27th - 13th October 2021 Together We Read is a digital book club for participating libraries and connecting readers in the UK. Readers can join in by checking out Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro a beautiful novel and always available on Sora during this period.
stayintouch@cromptonhouse.org Summer School Treats Summer school was a great success in the Food department. Students worked inde- pendently to make a fabulous Finnish fruit plait, and the results were fantastic. To make this sweet bread, students mixed strong bread flour, yeast, sugar, and dried fruit in a mixing bowl. Next, students added warm milk to activate the yeast and act as a raising agent which made the bread rise. Oil and beaten egg were added and the mixture was thoroughly combined with a wooden spoon until bread dough was formed. Students kneaded the dough and shaped it into a plait before glazing and baking in the oven. The results were fantastic, and every student produced an excellent product that was attrac- tively shaped and well risen. I am very proud of all students who took part. Students conducted themselves brilliantly, and worked in a very organised, sensible, and engaged manner. I have also created an Instagram page for the food department where you can find the recipe and instructions to make Finnish fruit plait yourself. Please follow our Instagram account to keep up to date with the latest news and activity within our depart- ment. I will be sharing lots of photos of our students’ successes and achievements. Please follow us at @cromptonhousefood Well done to all our summer school students! Miss Kennedy Subject Leader of Food & Nutrition
