Lenten Project – POD FAST On Wednesday afternoon we started our Lenten project. This project involves students and staff fasting from using hand held personally owned devices such as cell phones, ear buds, Ipads and gaming devices such as Nintendo DS, etc. So far, it has gone fairly well. Some students lost their devices on Thursday and Friday because they were seen with their devices in their hands. We would like to take the opportunity to clarify expectations and to ask parents for their support in encouraging students to put down their devices during the school day. Expectations Staff and Students will not use or carry personally owned devices at St. Rose of Lima for the duration of the school day, 8:05-3:00. If students are seen by staff they are asked to turn over their device to the office until 3:00 PM when they can retrieve it. Subsequent interventions and loss of the device will require parents to come to the school to retrieve the device and to have a conversation with administration on the importance of this project. The Impact of Cell Phones and PODs on Learning and the School Environment Numerous studies have been conducted on the impact of digital devices on learning and distraction for students. Social media and the ability to communicate instantly is a distraction in classes and they affect student focus. Parents can support their children by: • Not calling or texting students during the school day. We will happily call your child to the office to take a phone call if it is necessary or allow him or her to use the school phone. The school number is 403 500 2071 • Taking note of your child’s habits and social media use as well as the platforms that are used IE Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. • Reminding them of the Lenten Fast and the purpose of Lent and fasting in general • Keeping cell phones and other devices at home • Have a conversation about the impact on learning with your child’s teachers at PT conferences • Reviewing the POD contract which can be found on the school website at this link: https://www.cssd.ab.ca/schools/strose/Students/Pages/Personally-Owned-Devices.aspx Champion of the Week – Mr. Kapeta St. Rose of Lima is happy to recognize M. Kapeta this week for his work as a Champion at St. Rose. Mr. Kapeta cultivates outstanding relationships with his students in his grade 4 classroom. He cultivates a can-do spirit in his classroom and actively encourages his students to help one another. His team approach to managing his classroom helps students to feel they belong.
