St John & St James’ C of E Primary School Home and School Learning Reception Anoushka, Umut and Chloe made collages at home as part of their Transport Topic. Year 1 Year 1 launched themselves into their new history unit of: Transport throughout History. They learnt all about the importance of transport for the Vikings and created their very own Viking ships. Their ships look almost as flexible and slender as the originals and they even included raven banners. Excellent work Year 1! Year 2 Sariah amazed us in her homework task this week. She researched The Crimean War as part of her homework for Year 2’s new history unit and produced all these excellent facts. We loved her use of flags to represent countries and she has used capital letters for proper nouns throughout her work. Well done Sariah! Page 2
St John & St James’ C of E Primary School Year 3 Year 3 made 3D pyramids for the entry point of their new humanities unit: Ancient Egypt. This was made in class and even designed with the use of hieroglyphics, which resembles the original pyramids. They made the choice to stick to neutral colours, as they wanted their pyramids to resemble sand. Well done Year 3! Year 4 Rufus made this Viking ship out of clay for his new history unit: Vikings & Anglo-Saxons. We were so impressed by how life-like it looked and of course for the amazing effort that Rufus put into his work. What a tremendous effort Rufus! Page 3
St John & St James’ C of E Primary School Year 5 Jia-Ling has been an incredible home learner this week. Not only has she com- pleted all of her work, but she has also shared her work on Google Classrooms all week! It was especially impressive to see the care that Jia-Ling is putting into her work, even though she is at home. Her presentation is excellent. Keep it up Jia-Ling. Year 6 Gina and Bluebell carried out some research in class around their new humanities unit of: Crime & Punishment. They look at the types of crimes that were punished in the Anglo-Saxons time and presented all of this knowledge through their poster. They discovered that the biggest punishment at the time would be for crimes against the ruler. Excellent work Bluebell and Gina! Page 4
St John & St James’ C of E Primary School From Monday 11th January, the BBC is providing learning for children to help them keep up with their studies during the latest lockdown by broadcasting lessons on BBC Two and CBBC, as well as online. Joe Wicks is restarting his online PE lessons from next week, to help families keep fit during lockdown. Live sessions will run on his YouTube channel at 09:00 GMT on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. This week’s home reading tip is: Whether you are reading to your child, or they are reading to you, ask them lots of questions to ensure that they are engaging with the text. If you would like any books for your child to read at home during this lockdown, please call the office. Wellbeing Tips Breathing with colour Learning when to take time to breathe can you feel happier and more comfortable. Practice this easy technique. Set yourself mini-goals What do you want to complete or do this week? Setting goals can give you a clear purpose. It should be something you can do, don’t set yourself something too difficult. Examples: Clean my bedroom, get to the next level of my game, be kind to someone in my house. Write down three goals. Tick off each time you complete a goal. Bedtime It is crucial you have good bedtime routines. Children should be going to bed at their same bed time and getting up during lockdown. It is important children keep t their routines. Page 5
St John & St James’ C of E Primary School Maths at Home Card games are a great way to bring maths to life. Why nor try some of these at home? If you don’t have a set of playing cards, you could always create your own! Number bonds match (suitable for KS1 children) For this game, use 2 sets of the 1 – 9 digit cards plus two extra 5s. 1. Lay the cards out on a flat surface, face down so you can’t see the digits. 2. Take turns to turn over 2 cards at a time, if you get a number bond to 10 (numbers that add to 10), you keep the cards. 3. Once all the cards have been turned over, whoever has the most pairs, wins! Times table blast (suitable for KS2 children) For this game use four sets of 1 – 9 digit cards. 1. Deal five cards to each player and place the rest in a pile in the middle of the players. 2. On their turn, one player will place one of their cards down in front of them and turn one over from the pile. 3. The player must then multiply the numbers together and say the product. If they are right, they keep both cards. If they are wrong, other players can buzz in by saying their name and then the correct answer. If they are correct, they get to keep the cards. 4. The aim of the game is to be the last player to have cards left. This game can also be played by adding the numbers together instead of multiplying. There are plenty more games that you can play as well. Encourage children to make up their own games with the cards and create their own rules. Children can link them to existing games such as Go Fish or Snap, but think about looking for number bonds instead of making sets or runs. Page 6
