CONTACTS Ruth Miskin Trainers: Hayley Goldsworthy – hayleygoldsworthy@ruthmiskin.com Robert Simpson – robertsimpson@ruthmiskin.com GENERAL INTRODUCTION Read Write Inc. Phonics is a structured approach to teaching students to read in Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2. The program can also be used to support low- achieving readers in Years 3 and 4 (while Read Write Inc. Fresh Start is suitable for teaching older students to read through age-appropriate texts). In Read Write Inc. Phonics, homogeneous groups, which are assigned from regular assessments, receive daily instruction in phonics, reading and writing. Carefully designed storybooks support the application of phonic knowledge to reading texts with increasing complexity. Students build their decoding, fluency and comprehension skills over the course of the lessons and extend their transcription and composition skills through writing tasks that are linked to the storybook content. The daily 60-minute sessions in the Read Write Inc. Phonics program replace existing reading and writing sessions, and the regular assessments allow for the tracking of student progress over time. Students completing the Read Write Inc. Phonics program will have developed a solid grasp of the graphemes used in the English language and their use in reading and writing. As competent readers, they will be well prepared to continue their reading journey using existing curriculum guidelines.
STEP-BY-STEP IMPLEMENTATION Step 1: Order Read Write Inc. Phonics resources From your Oxford Consultant, order resources to suit your needs. Oxford Consultants will help you to order the appropriate resources to implement Read Write Inc. Phonics successfully in your school. Step 2: Undergo training Staff attend an accredited Ruth Miskin Read Write Inc. Phonics Training course. Step 3: Appoint a Reading Leader The role of the Reading Leader is to: 1. organise ongoing training for teachers 2. engage parents in student learning 3. build and support a team of excellent reading teachers 4. assess reading and group students 5. organise on-to-one tutoring where necessary. While it is important to ensure the Reading Leader has time to develop their own teaching skills by taking groups in the early days of implementation, it is vital that eventually the Reading Leader is released from class teaching duties during Read Write Inc. Phonics lessons so they have enough time to dedicate to this role. For further information about the role, contact your Ruth Miskin Trainer or Oxford Consultant. Step 4: Check and organise purchased resources When your resources arrive, check them off against the invoice and separate the teacher resources from student resources (storybooks).

Below are examples of storybook storage (labels are available from Oxford Owl): Horizontal document boxes Upright storage boxes: Plastic tubs: (from Officeworks): Step 5: Prepare resources for teaching For Speed Sound lessons From the Read Write Inc. Teacher Kit: • Sort the Picture Sound Cards into matching sounds (four pictures for all sounds). (Needed for Set 1 teaching). • Cut and sort the Phonics Green Cards into their sounds (the last few sounds have larger cards so be careful when cutting). • Sort Magnetic Sound Cards ready for use. (Needed for Set 1 teaching). From Oxford Owl: • Print, cut and sort Nonsense Word Cards to match the Phonics Green Cards (white card works well for these to differentiate them from other resources). • Print, cut and sort the additional Multisyllabic Words (needed from Set 1 Word Time 1.6+). For the storybook lessons Print off as below and store with each storybook. Story Introduction – introduction to read to students at the beginning of each story. This is also available in the Handbook under each book’s lesson plan. Story Green Words – low-frequency words with sounds students have been taught. They include names and words that are particular to the storybook. A few ‘challenge’ words appear in Yellow, Blue and Grey storybooks. ‘Challenge’ words are low frequency and include a low-frequency grapheme that has not been taught. They are within the Story Green Words section.
Speedy Green Words – common words with common graphemes included frequently in the storybooks. Speedy Green Words are introduced in Red to Orange storybooks. Note: Speedy Green Words can be taught using the online resource instead if necessary. Stimulus pictures – in the file you will find stimulus pictures for each estorybook; you can also add your own. As teachers work their way through teaching the storybooks, ask them to find, print and laminate pictures from the internet to support vocabulary understanding and context filling for items that students might need support with and store these with the storybook for future use. Note: Some schools choose a different shade of green for each of these so they are easily distinguished from each other and the green Word Time Words that come in the Teacher Kit. Note: ‘System Card’ (200 gsm) is a good weight of card when printing the word cards for daily use. The cost of time and materials required to laminate these resources outweighs the cost of replacing them. As they are for teacher use only, they can last for a considerable length of time. Step 6: Share information Staff Meeting, Parent Meeting: At this point many schools hold a meeting to explain the program to the school community, including other staff members, and parents and carers, either together or separately. There are now seven ‘bite size’ Parent Meeting PowerPoints and a matching guidance available on the Ruth Miskin School Portal, including a Letter to Parents.
