Kiwi Sticks (Half field Six Aside Rules) The current rules are from the Hockey NZ hockey modules. This is a simplified version for coaches and umpires of this division. Foot Rule: Penalty given if kicked within the circle. Attacking teams take the free hit just outside the circle with no direct hits straight in to the circle. Penalty given in the field of play if deemed a deliberate foot. Free hit taken where it hits the foot. If the foot infringement is not interfering with the game please let it run to keep the game flowing. No dangerous play - this includes raised sticks, no raised balls, no hacking, tackling from the left or behind the player and no physical contact. No back of the stick. Free hit and side line hit: If the ball goes over the side line, the opposing team takes a free hit at that place. All defending players to be 5m away. Long Corner: A long corner is awarded when the ball goes over the back line by the defending team. Long corners are taken at a point that is 5m from the corner of the side line. Every player is to be 5m away from the player taking the free hit. Goals: Can only be scored from inside the circle area. Coaches are encouraged to play players in positions to ease the transition to 11 aside hockey. To put it in a simplified form please refer to the diagram further in this booklet. There are to be NO players standing in the goal acting as a goalie. Pushing or sweeping the ball is allowed in this grade but there is to be NO hitting of the ball. Each coach/team umpires half a game each. Please make sure you have a whistle and record the score on the sheet in the umpire’s dugout. Have fun!
Mini Sticks (Quarter Field 6 Aside Rules) Foot Rule: Penalty given if kicked within the 10 metre mark from the back line. If players are crowded around the ball, please blow the whistle and encourage the players to spread out. No dangerous play - this includes raised sticks, no raised balls, no hacking, tackling from the left or behind the player and no physical contact. No back of the stick. If the ball goes over the back line – defending team takes a free hit at the top of the circle, regardless of who hits the ball out. All players are to be 5m from the player taking the free hit. Coaches are encouraged to play their players in positions. Please refer to the diagram further in this booklet. There are to be NO players standing in the goal. Players can only sweep or push the ball. There is to be NO hitting. Goals can only be scored from inside the 10m area. Coaches are to use discretion as there are no permanent markers on the field. Each coach/team umpires half a game each. Please make sure you have a whistle and record the score on the sheet in the umpire’s dugout. Have Fun!
Kiwi Sticks (Half Field 7 Aside Rules and procedures) Six players plus a goalie per team on the turf at any one time, with rolling substitutions. Children should have the opportunity to experience a variety of positions during the season, with players being taught the roles of each position. Footwear, mouth guards and shin pads MUST be worn by all players. Standard hockey balls are to be used. The game shall be played on a half field. The ball may be pushed, slap hit or hit anywhere in the field, including the circles. The ball must NOT be raised about the top of the shin pad height at any time, other than a shot at goal when it must remain lower than the back board. A free hit must be given when: 1. The ball hits a player’s foot. 2. A player deliberately turns and places their body between the ball and an opposing player who is within playing distance of the ball. 3. A player interferes with the ball carriers stick (hacking). 4. A player uses the back of their stick. 5. Dangerous ball (raised where a player has to take evasive action). Auto Pass The player taking a free hit from the field of play, side line or centre pass has the option of passing to another player or making an auto or self-pass – a tap and go action. The opposition must be either back 5m, or if they are not, may not interfere with play. When a free hit is awarded within 5m of the attacking circle, the free hit or auto pass must travel 5m before a shot at goal can be taken.
When a free hit is being taken (including sideline hits and each start/restart of play from halfway), all defending players should be at least 5m away from the ball or retiring. Umpires may allow advantage to the attacking team if a defender is less than 5m away. A player may lift the ball skilfully over an opposing player’s grounded stick in the field, including the circle or when taking a shot at goal. However, no higher than the top of the shin pad. Goals are scored when the ball is played by an attacking player within the circle. An attacker may hit, push or slap hit when shooting for goal. The ball must not go above back board of the goal. Penalty corners will NOT be awarded. If the team infringes inside their defending circle, a free hit is given. The attacking team takes this 5m outside the circle. The ball cannot be hit directly in to the circle and must travel 5m before it enters the circle. Play advantage as much as you can in the circle for the attacking team. A long corner is awarded if the ball goes over the back line off a defending players stick. Long corners are taken at a point of 5m from the corner on the side line. All players are to be 5m away and the ball cannot be hit directly in to the circle. Please refer to the Long Corner diagram. If the ball goes over the sideline, the opposing team takes a free hit/push at that place. . All defending players should be at least 5m from the ball or retiring. Umpires may allow advantage to the attacking team if a defender is less than 5m away. Please note: If the ball hits the divider you play on. If it goes over the divider then it is out and a side line hit is given to the appropriate team. Goalkeepers must be wearing full protective gear. If there is no goalkeeper, no player is to be appointed to stand in their goal. However, players may run back to defend. Sticks are not to be raised, or used, in a dangerous manner, including lifting them over the heads of other players.
Coaching – emphasis placed on: The basic skills of passing, receiving on both sides of the body in a static and dynamic position. 1. Elimination skills including dribbling to set up a pass or a goal shot. 2. Defensive skills of tackling, engaging and delaying. 3. Tactical emphasis on team dynamics, decision making, defensive and attacking concepts, positional understanding and concepts of space. 4. The requirements and execution of set plays. Goalkeepers named in 11-aside teams may be named in a field position of this grade. However, please note that HSC will not accommodate any timetable conflicts between these grades. In short, full rules of hockey apply but with no penalty corners Have fun!
