Term 3 2018 Year 5 Learning Overview Dear Parents and Caregivers, Welcome back to a new and exciting term of learning. We trust that our Southwell students have all had a restful break and are looking forward to the term to come. This letter is to outline some of the learning opportunities that your children are involved in during Term 3. Our overarching Big Idea this term is ‘CONNECTIONS’. We will be initially looking at Kiwiana and what makes New Zealand special. Students will then be choosing a different country to explore and identify what makes that culture unique. They will create a presentation about why we should travel to that country. At the end of the term we are looking at having a ‘Travel Expo’ so children can share their ideas. Term 3 is always wonderfully busy and full of excitement, especially for those involved in the School Opera. We want all Opera children to enjoy this experience. Please keep in touch with your child’s class teacher regarding how your child is coping with this extra commitment. Learning Goals in Literacy and Maths continue to be developed and worked on over the term. These help keep the children focused on specific areas to improve on and ensure that they are developing the step by step processes needed to become better learners rather than just striving for an end goal. Learning Conferences take place in Week 3 with classroom teachers and in Week 5 with Maths and Specialist teachers. Please ensure that you are booked in to see your child’s teacher so that we can discuss your child’s progress as well as the next steps to take to keep their learning moving ahead. Writing Writing at the beginning of Term 3 will focus on children developing the skill of ‘show not tell’ where children will explore how to show their ideas in their writing without directly telling the reader what is happening. Mid way through the term we will integrate our writing with our Social Science topic and children will use persuasive writing to present their ideas about a new culture. The students will also continue to complete quick writes that will be motivated through different media. United As Southwell www.southwell.school.nz
Reading The students will work in their Guided Reading groups with the teacher focusing on important reading strategies such as identifying the main idea and inferencing. Hopefully the students have kept up their reading over the holidays by using the Wheelers e-book platform. They were encouraged to download these and we will continue to use this as a source for reading. With regular visits to our library and a variety of hard copy and online resources the students will experience a variety of reading platforms. Maths In Maths, we will initially complete our strand on Measurement while continuing with a focus on Number, in particular using algorithms to solve larger number equations and Problem Solving. We will then move onto Geometry. A focus on consolidating basic facts will continue as this is a basis for children to build strategies to solve problems. Parent encouragement in practising basic facts throughout the week will help to motivate this learning in students. Children can practise these orally / with flashcard / charts or on games on the computer and Speed Skills on Maths Buddy. Spelling Explicit teaching on spelling rules and sounds will help to consolidate children’s learning in this area. Being able to transfer this learning into their reading and writing will ensure that children are more accurate in their decoding when reading and their spelling when writing. Using Steps Web, as part of their reading programme and as homework, will help reinforce this classroom learning. Using the games as a part of this program gives children an opportunity to develop their skills in memory, processing and fluency. Encourage children to use the games after they have completed 3 activities within Steps Web. Some other Curriculum areas that the children are involved in are as follows: Science – Ms Voss In Term 3, Year 5 students will be learning about sound. They will gain an understanding of how it travels through different materials and what the different parts of a soundwave mean. Once this unit is complete we will be looking at the lifecycle of flowering plants. Technology – Miss McMaster supported by Year 5 Teachers Our unit this term is Food Technology. Our focus will be on developing the children’s cooking and baking skills, but we will be linking this unit to the Big Idea of Connections. Once the students are introduced to the Food Tech room, they will be making recipes that are based on simple dishes from other cultures. Physical Education – Mr Norman, Mrs Rudduck, Mrs Milroy • Training 2 play/Playing 2 train o This unit is designed to empower students to achieve personal excellence regardless of their individual fitness abilities. • Into the Gap o A variety of modified striking and fielding games looking at student’s ability to devise strategies to defend and maximise scoring opportunities. • Athletics o The aim of the unit is for students to participate in a variety of field and track events. Through video, peer and teacher feedback students are able to implement this knowledge to improve their performance. French – Mrs Shirley Children will use the story of Chicken Licken to build up their French vocabulary. We will concentrate on oral learning this term and gradually add in some reading. Art – Ms Marshall Students continue to learn characteristics of drawing and painting, using a variety of techniques and practices. They will complete the colour unit - primary, secondary, tertiary and complementary colours; base colours and glazing. They will learn painting techniques to create effect and texture. They will then focus on illustrations - looking at different sources and drawing their own illustrated images. We’ll also do a unit on collage. Music – Mrs Trenwith Students will continue to build on their understanding of basic rhythm and beat. They will develop and explore their understanding of syncopated rhythm patterns through 4 basic music feels. Drama – Mrs Trenwith Students will create mimes in small groups using varying scenarios as stimuli. They will work collaboratively to develop ideas and construct a cohesive storyline, whilst using conventions of mime to convey their performance.
